Producers Lindelof and Cuse Give a New Q&A on LOST

Cast and Crew of Lost, Interviews 3 Comments »

Below is a new article from IGN.com. (It contains some minor spoilers).

LOST’s executive producer/showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse spoke yesterday at Creative Screenwriting’s 2008 Screenwriting Expo, for an informative and fun Q&A about their creative process on the fascinating series.

The duo talked about their history together, dating back to when Cuse hired Lindelof as a writer on Nash Bridges. Cuse recounted how he’d specifically asked to see something original Lindelof had written (as opposed to a spec script based on an existing series), and was very impressed by the 17 page sample he was given of a one-act play Lindelof wrote… only to later discover Lindelof had hastily written those pages specifically for Cuse to see.

Nash Bridges star Cheech Marin plays Hurley’s dad on Lost, and Cuse revealed another Nash alum, Patrick Fischler, will be guest starring on an episode in Season 5. Mad Men fans will recognize Fischler for his recent role as Jimmy Barrett.

After working on Kevin Williamson’s Wasteland, Nash Bridges and Tim Kring’s Crossing Jordan, Lindelof recalled a meeting where he was told he’d have, “‘a great chance for you to meet J.J. [Abrams],’ who I’d been stalking for years, since Felicity and Alias.” When Abrams made it clear he had no interest in running Lost on the heels of four years each of Felicity and Alias, and also thanks to his interest in features, Lindelof knew he, “needed someone with experience” to help him, and turned to his old boss Cuse.

Lindelof admitted he was initially intimidated by the “insane creative challenges” of Lost, recalling that while they were waiting to hear if the project would be picked up as a series, he had people at the network telling him, “Yeah, the pilot is great, but there’s no series there. How are you going to do this every week?” Lindelof joked that his reply was, “I have no f**ing idea. Please don’t pick it up!”

Lost had a very expensive pilot, costing 11.5 million dollars. Cuse and Lindelof recalled that the ABC executive who greenlit it, “knew ABC was going to fire him, so this was sort of his final f**k you to them.”

J.J. Abrams: He Holds The Secrets

Cast and Crew of Lost, Interviews 0 Comments »

Abrams, creator of cult favorites “Lost,” “Alias” and the new hit “Fringe,” offers revealing clues to his fanboy-inspiring mega-successes.

By Brian Truitt

We’re all sworn to secrecy. We can’t say anything.”

This is the mantra for most any cast or crew member on a J.J. Abrams project. On the third day of the pop-culture extravaganza known as Comic-Con International in San Diego, it’s coming from Simon Pegg, the British actor who plays Scotty in Abrams’ big-screen “Star Trek,” due out in May.

Secrets are at the heart of Abrams’ most popular works, from the ABC hits “Lost” and “Alias” and his monster movie “Cloverfield” to his new series, “Fringe.” The Fox drama’s debut episode in September scored 9.1 million viewers; the second episode rocketed to 13.4 million, the biggest second-episode increase for a network series in at least 17 years, Fox says.

There is a reason Abrams, 42, came in at No. 29 on “Entertainment Weekly’s” list of the 50 smartest people in Hollywood: He holds the secrets everybody wants to know.

Yet keeping them secret before the big reveal is about as hard as making his masterpieces in the first place. Somehow, Abrams kept his “Cloverfield” monster from leaking all over the Internet before the film reached theaters, but he also teased fans with viral websites. He does this, though, because of his fans, the ones who swarm him asking about the mysterious island on “Lost” or trying to get some “Star Trek” scoop. He is the geek deity, and waves of people part as he makes his way across the Comic-Con floor, security in tow.

Dominic Monaghan Will Play a British Rock Star on… “Chuck”

Cast and Crew of Lost, Interviews 0 Comments »

In what marks his first major TV gig since Lost, Dominic Monaghan has signed on to guest-star on NBC’s Chuck as — stop me if this sounds familiar — a free-spirited British rock star targeted for death by a shadowy group of evildoers. And the similarities to his Lost alter ego Charlie don’t end there. Well, actually, yes, they do. “This is a very, very different kind of character,” insists executive producer Josh Schwartz of Monaghan’s metalhead, who makes an in-store appearance at Buy More and ends up getting entangled in one of Chuck’s spy games. “He’s a lunatic in the best sense of the word. And there’s no heroin [addiction].” Monaghan’s participation is only half the Feb. 2 episode’s sell: It also will air partly in 3-D, piggybacking on NBC’s 3-D Super Bowl stunt. (The network will broadcast the big game the night before.) Aside from the cool factor of seeing himself in 3-D, what drew Monaghan to the role? Did he have any hesitation about channeling someone who, at least on paper, so closely resembles Charlie? And might his tube return be the precursor to another Lost comeback? Hmmm….Sounds like the set-up to an exclusive Q&A with Dominic Monaghan. Scratch that. It is the set-up to an exclusive Q&A with Dominic Monaghan.

AUSIELLO: Welcome back to TV. Why now and why Chuck?

DOMINIC MONAGHAN: I wanted to work with Josh Schwartz. I’ve been wanting to be in business with him for a long time. My agent got me more and more interested in his work and his background and his sensibilities and we’ve been looking for a way to [connect] for a while now. He’s my age, he’s smart and cool and, obviously, extremely invested in the industry. He’s a comic book fan, he’s a movie fan, he’s a big fan of TV and gives it a lot of respect. It’s the same reason I wanted to work on Lost. I walked into a meeting with Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams and really considered those two people to be the real future of television.

Your Chuck character, Tyler Martin, sounds strangely familiar…

He is an English rock star, so obviously there are similarities [to Charlie]. But this is a comedic role. Charlie was not incredibly comedic on purpose. I think Charlie had funny moments, but Charlie was quite tortured and into meth. The guy that I play on Chuck is just an out-and-out lunatic. If you were to look up “definitive rock star” in the dictionary, there would be a picture of him. But there was definitely a little trepidation. I never want to play the same thing twice.
