More than 600,000 fans braved an early morning start yesterday, Monday 24 May, to watch the finale of Lost at 5am on Sky1 – more than have been watching the show in its regular Friday 9pm slot in recent weeks.

Lost had a five-minute peak audience of 854,000 viewers, with an average of 635,000 between 5am and 7.15am.

The finale, entitled The End, was scheduled to run until 7.30am, but the broadcast – beamed in live from the US as Sky1 simulcast the show’s conclusion with US network ABC’s west coast transmission – actually ended 15 minutes early. Sky1 was one of seven non-US broadcasters that simulcast The End late on Sunday and yesterday.

Between 6am and 6.30am the Lost finale, the climax of 121 often baffling episodes, had a bigger audience than BBC breakfast and ITV1′s GMTV.

In the past month Lost, which normally airs on Sky1 at 9pm on Friday, has attract between 500,000 and 575,000 viewers.

In the US the final episode drew 13 million viewers on ABC on Sunday at 9pm, the highest ratings for the show for two years, although some observers thought that such a high-profile finale would draw bigger numbers.

The first half of “The End” drew 396.000 viewers (39,6% share) on CUATRO, while the second half averaged 408,000 viewers (25,7% share).

The overall Lost finale numbers for 9-11:30pm were a 5.8 adults 18-49 rating and 13.5 million average viewers. Those were the best numbers for a Lost finale since 2007. The Lost – Final Journey clip show averaged a 4.0 adults 18-49 rating from 7-9pm.

Opposite stiff all-original demographic competition at 9:00 p.m. on Fox (Idol-fueled “Glee”), NBC (second hour of a 2-hour “The Biggest Loser”) and CBS (“NCIS: LA”), ABC’s “Lost” built on its lead-in by 60% in Adults 18-49 (4.0/10).  Finishing a strong No. 2 in Adults 18-49 to “Glee,” “Lost” outperformed “The Biggest Loser” by 11% (3.6/9) and “NCIS: LA” by 21% (3.3/8) in the hour.  Topping “Glee” for the 2nd straight week, Lost ranked No. 1 in the hour and as the top-rated scripted show of the night in key Men (M18-34/M18-49).

Building its overall audience for its 3rd straight original broadcast, “Lost” generated its most-watched telecast (10.2 million) since the beginning of February (3rd largest audience this season) and equaled its top Adult 18-49 number (4.0/10) since March – since 2/9 and 3/30/10, respectively.

Lost’s 4.0 rating was even with last week’s episode. Reports are there was a 2 minute overrun of Lost into the 10pm hour, so it’s more likely than usual that the V ratings will be adjusted downward, and Lost ratings adjusted upward in the final ratings.

To determine which series generated the most advertising revenue in 2009, we turned to Kantar Media, formerly TNS Media Intelligence, which tracks ad spending. The firm surveyed all regularly scheduled prime-time shows, excluding sports franchises, for our third annual list of TV’s Top Moneymakers. For an apples-to-apples comparison of network programs of differing lengths, the series are ranked based on ad revenue per average 30 minutes.

To be sure, the revenue figures provided are estimates. The amount individual buyers actually forked over for their collection of 30-second spots varies, depending on everything from advertisers’ perceptions about a show’s value to their clout with the respective network. The broadcast networks’ continued viewership decline along with a recessionary marketplace factored into the decision-making process as well.

For a cult-like series that requires intense focus and commitment, advertisers are willing to shell out. Collectively, buyers forked over more than $5 million per episode during the long-running and ever-popular series’ second to last season.

CBS moved into first overall in the 9 p.m. hour with a 10.3/16 for “NCIS: Los Angeles.” ABC’s “Lost” was second overall with a 5.6/9 and won the hour with a 4.2 rating in the key demo, both up from last week when “Idol” was two hours. NBC’s “Biggest Loser” had a 5.5/9 for third. An encore of “Glee” on FOX was in line with the show’s average for new originals thanks to that “Idol” bump. The CW’s “Melrose Place” returned with a 0.9/1, under 1.2 million viewers and a 0.5 rating in the demo. Those aren’t good numbers for “Melrose Place,” not that they require interpretation.

ABC’s “Lost” Season 6 Opener Delivers Big Increases in DVR Playback, the

Week No. 20: Live + 7 Day Ratings:

Based on Nielsen’s Live + 7 Day information for the week of February 1, 2010, which included the first round of data for the Season 6 of “Lost,” the 6th-year ABC drama premiere picked up an additional 2.2 million viewers (12.1 million to 14.3 million) and 1.1 Adult 18-49 rating points (5.6 rating to 6.7 rating) through DVR playback from its first-reported overnight numbers.  In fact in terms of actual gains and percentage gains, it was the biggest-ever increase for a “Lost” season opener through DVR playback. In the finalized numbers, “Lost” stood as the week’s No. 1 scripted TV show with Adults 18-49.

During the week, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” was once again TV’s most-played-back show, while “Lost,” “Modern Family” and “Private Practice” all saw substantial gains in the finalized DVR playback averages.

• ABC claimed 3 of TV’s Top 8 biggest overall gainers, with each show jumping by more than 2 million viewers: “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 1 (+2.758 million), “Lost” – No. 5 (+2.207 million) and “Modern Family” – No. 8 (+2.164 million – biggest freshman gainer).

• Among Adults 18-49, ABC aired 4 of the Top 10 TV series with the biggest rating increases: “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 1 (+1.4 rating points/+31%), “Lost” – No. 4 (+1.1 rating/+20%), “Modern Family” – No. 4 (+1.1 rating/+28% – biggest freshman gainer) and “Private Practice” – No. 10 (+0.8 rating/+24%).

Lost held up very well with a 4.5/10 rating/share with adults 18-49 at 9pm against the games, dropping, but not too far, from last week’s 4.9/12.

The return of Lost for its final season was a ratings success for Sky1 last night, according to early figures. The first two episodes of season six, which revealed what happened after Juliet attempted to detonate the bomb, pulled in audiences of 830k (3.4%) and 728k (3.7%) from 9pm.
