Matthew Fox Drops Out Of ‘World War Z’

Bad news for Paramount Pictures: Despite previous reports, Vulture hears that that neither Matthew Fox nor Ed Harris will be starring in the studio’s zombie-pocalypse thriller, World War Z. Fox has a scheduling conflict stemming from his prior commitment to star in I, Alex Cross with Tyler Perry at Summit Entertainment; less clear is why the Harris deal didn’t make. (Last week, word came that the four-time Oscar nominee would star in Beth Henley’s Pulitzer-winning play The Jacksonian, but that doesn’t start performances until next February at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse.) The actors had smaller roles in the Brad Pitt flick, but with the movie already in production in Malta, the filmmakers are scrambling to recast, having actors read in both London and Los Angeles.

EXCLUSIVE: Matthew Fox and Ed Harris are in talks to join Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos and James Badge Dale in the Marc Forster-directed World War Z for Paramount and Skydance Productions. Forster has also set Julia Levy-Boeken, the French actress who stars in the Israeli series alufa Ha. The film is an adaptation of the Max Brooks novel that looks back on a global zombie infestation 10 years after the fact. Fox, who just wrapped a West End stage turn in the Neil LaBute play In a Forest Dark and Deep, is separately slated to play a vicious serial killer opposite Tyler Perry in the Rob Cohen-directed I, Alex Cross for Summit Entertainment, with production starting in August. Harris just starred in the Asger Leth-directed Man on a Ledge for Summit. Fox is repped by WME and Management 360, Harris by CAA and Levy-Boeken by Weiner Management.

WWZ begins production this month after a long period in which Paramount struggled with the $125 million budget until Skydance’s David Ellison stepped into the breach along with another unnamed financier to take some of the burden off the studio. With the expectation that JJ Abrams won’t be able to pull together a Star Trek sequel for summer 2012, WWZ looms as an option for Paramount, as does its sequel to G.I. Joe.

Matthew Fox Lands Killer Role In ‘I, Alex Cross’

EXCLUSIVE: In his first major film role since leaving Lost, Matthew Fox has signed on to play an assassin in I, Alex Cross, the reboot of the James Patterson franchise character that’s being put together by QED with Tyler Perry starring and Rob Cohen directing. Ed Burns has also signed on to play Tommy Kane, Cross’s partner. At least three studios are vying for the project and a domestic distribution deal will be set imminently.

Contrary to his virtuous Lost character Jack Shepard, Fox will be playing one bad dude in this film. Fox plays Michael Sullivan, who kills both for money and thrills. He’s known as the Butcher of Sligo and shows why after Cross thwarts one of his killing attempts. Sullivan makes his retribution personal, by killing the detective’s wife in gruesome fashion. Then it becomes a mano a mano battle between them. Sullivan is one of the best known villains in the Patterson-penned novel series.

Mark Moss wrote the script and he and Cohen have generated a new draft that has some twists different from the novel. QED partners Bill Block and Paul Hanson are producing. WME put the package together.

The reboot of the Alex Cross series took root in late January, with Perry taking the role originated by Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider. Those films were made at Paramount.

When Lost ascended to the TV afterlife last May, you returned to your normal life, paying those overdue bills, mowing your overgrown lawn, even resuming communication with those who couldn’t understand why you wanted to own a jar of Dharma peanut butter. But perhaps somewhere in the recesses of your brain, as you saw an Elizabeth Mitchell or a Daniel Dae Kim pop up on your flatscreen, you started thinking about our dear castaways. Where are those Lost actors now? Do you they miss working on the show? And is it true that Josh Holloway cut his hair?

Those burning questions — and more — are answered in this week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly. We interviewed a bunch of cast members, including Matthew Fox, Josh Holloway, and Elizabeth Mitchell, and caught up the men in charge of the show, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, as well as co-creator J.J. Abrams. The good news? No one is currently roaming the halls of a psychiatric facility in a bathrobe, repeatedly chanting six numbers. Some more good news? Several familiar faces — such as Jorge Garcia, Michael Emerson, and Henry Ian Cusick — are plotting their return to series television by starring in drama pilots. Another has landed on the stage: Mr. Fox is currently in London, starring in a new Neil LaBute play titled In a Forest Dark and Deep. “A play in the West End of London is something I’ve always dreamed of doing,” he tells EW, noting that “it’s been my goal after Lost to get into a situation where I’m doing a film here and there and a play here and there — that broad of a structure.”

Fox isn’t the only former cast member exploring new ground in Europe: Holloway recently filmed scenes for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, starring Tom Cruise. While he can’t spill too much about his role, he does hint, “I’m definitely doing some ass-kicking.” And because he’s down for all kinds of challenges in this next phase of his career, he’s guest-starring in the paintball-themed season finale of Community. “There’s a couple of good one-liners in there,” he says. “I hope I pull them off!” (Fingers tightly crossed for a Troy and Abed in the Morning segment with Holloway.)

Matthew Fox Shows His Private Plane, Dishes on Hollywood, Acting, Life & More

The Daily Mail has published an insightful interview with Matthew Fox. Here are some interesting excerpts from the article:

Fox is something of an iconoclast. Mount Bachelor, in Bend, Oregon, is his home patch. Geography is not the only thing that distances him from LA. He might not be the only star who dislikes Hollywood’s latest fixations; he is, though, one of the few who will actually say it.

‘Look at 3D,’ he says. ‘That’s a major setback to good storytelling. I took my little boy to see The Last Airbender. It was an awful film. The director M Night Shyalaman hasn’t directed a decent movie since The Sixth Sense.

‘I’m disillusioned with the drift towards gratuitous entertainment, which so much of Hollywood is now. Because of the state of the economy people seem to want pure escapism. But if the roles I fight to get all go to Matt Damon, then I won’t work. I turn a lot of stuff down – big, big movies, the kind I wouldn’t want to go to the cinema to see.

‘I’m sorry, but I can’t make a movie with the blonde from ER who is starring in every single bad romantic comedy. Unless they reinvent the wheel in terms of romantic comedies – in other words, they start making them funny and romantic again – I’m not going to be starring in any of those movies.’

‘My hangar is my getaway place,’ he says. ‘Some guys have a garden shed where they can disappear. This is my sanctuary where I can get away from the world, where it’s just me, my car and my plane.’

The 44-year-old likes to be taken out of his comfort zone.

For Lost, he relocated his family to the Hawaiian island of Oahu for six years, where they filmed nine months out of 12, six days a week for up to 18 hours a day. Fox, oozing the old-school masculinity of someone like Steve McQueen, became the show’s leading star, earning £140,000 per episode by the end of its epic 121-part run.

‘After Lost, I never need to take a job for the money again. I could just stay in Bend and fly my plane.

‘A lot of the time I hate acting. It has a lot to do with the way I was brought up in a world where showing your emotions is frowned upon. It’s just not manly. I don’t do anything in life because I love doing it. It’s because I want to be good at it. It doesn’t make for an easy life.’

Three months later, in London’s West End, we meet again. Fox is to star opposite London-born Olivia Williams in U.S. playwright Neil LaBute’s In A Forest, Dark And Deep; they play highly dysfunctional, semi-estranged siblings opening old wounds while clearing out a family home. He’s far from Oregon but no less opinionated.

‘I get to say some outrageous stuff about U2 in this play. My character used to like U2. Now he thinks they’re rubbish, and I think he’s right. Everything they’ve released in the last 15 years sounds so overdone. Also, he believes passionately that rock stars shouldn’t try to save the world. I tend to agree with him. Rock stars should stick to being good rock stars.’

So far he has chosen his Hollywood projects sparingly, appearing in the political thriller Vantage Point and Speed Racer, the follow-up film by the directors of the Matrix series.

‘The fact is that I’m far more comfortable sitting on a horse and herding cattle than walking up a red carpet. People think I’m being disingenuous when I say I don’t like the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

‘But truthfully, I can’t stand it. There are very few situations I’d less like to be in than a Hollywood premiere or an awards ceremony. They’re not what my life is about.

‘My passions lie elsewhere. There’s flying my plane, cruising in my car, and lots of other things that keep me occupied. If I’m going to party I prefer to do it outdoors.

Fox hasn’t been afraid to immerse himself in some aspects of British culture. In London last November (for the first informal read-throughs of the play) he attended his first Premier League football match.

‘I’m a big follower of the English game so I went to Arsenal v Tottenham at the Emirates stadium. I took my wife and my manager and we bumped into Thierry Henry. He’s a big fan of Lost, we had a brief chat and he asked us if we’d like to watch the game from his private box. His old club lost 3-2, but after the game Thierry took me to the changing room to meet all the players. So now I am an Arsenal supporter for the rest of my days.’

A passion for football, however, is unlikely to keep him in London for long – and he doesn’t rule out a complete change of career.

‘I don’t really see any difference between my job and my pastimes. They’re things I’m interested in. I know some Hollywood studios see me becoming a leading man on the big budget vehicles, playing the kind of roles that Steve McQueen used to excel at. But I’m not in any hurry. I’d be just as happy sitting back and watching the seasons change.

‘There’s a possibility I’ll give up acting and do something altogether different. Become an astronomer, maybe. I can think of worse ways to spend the rest of my days.’

Notes from a traveller: Matthew Fox

My wife’s Italian and so we’ve spent a lot of time in Italy. When we were just out of college we took trains and hitchhiked to the southernmost tip of the country. We were young and broke — it was a big adventure. We ate fruit from trees and raided farmers’ fields for fresh eggplant and peppers. It was very romantic.

There’s nothing better than a road trip, especially if I’m with my brothers. I really enjoy them and being out on the road clears the mind. It’s not always about the destination.

I had a wonderful time filming Lost in Hawaii. We were there for six years and we have many fond memories of the place. It was wonderful for my kids, Kyle, 12, and Byron, nine. They both fell in love with it.

Venice is my favourite winter destination. It’s quiet, foggy and very mysterious — so beautiful and serene. I feel very fortunate to have seen it through the eyes of Venetians.

Theatre is an important part of any destination for me, certainly in London and New York. I love the community experience of sitting in an audience with a bunch of people and watching actors on stage pour their hearts into a production.

Portland, Oregon is a really cool city. It’s very old and traditional but has these magnificent steel bridges. It rains a lot but I think that creates a creative energy in the city. There’s great music and art scenes, and a bunch of comedy companies.

I grew up in the mountains of Wyoming and so I love being up in the mountains and the snow. For me it’s all about big wide open spaces and a four-season climate.

I spent a summer filming Speed Racer in Berlin. It’s an amazing city. It’s a very happening place but it’s also steeped in so much history

Starring in a play in London’s West End has always been a dream of mine. I’ve visited a handful of times but have always been in and out really quickly, so I’m looking forward to spending more time in the city and getting to know it better.

Matthew Fox Returns from Volunteering in India with Operation Smile

Norfolk, VA – During Operation Smile’s current medical mission in Guwahati, India, the international children’s medical charity was proud to host actor Matthew Fox. Just weeks before the Christmas holidays, Fox traveled to India to volunteer on this medical mission and meet hundreds of children suffering from cleft lips and cleft palates who were born into unimaginable poverty. Every year in India, thousands of children are born with a cleft, but their parents are too poor to help them receive the surgery they so desperately need.

For almost 30 years, Operation Smile has provided free surgery for children around the world who were born with facial deformities. With a surgery that takes as few as 45 minutes and costs as little as $240, Operation Smile has helped more than 150,000 patients.

During Operation Smile’s 34th medical mission in India, Fox, along with friend and Operation Smile medical volunteer Dr. Tom Crabtree, was immersed in the mission process. He waited and played with children as they prepared for surgery, donned scrubs to witness surgeries in the operating room, and shared the moment with the children and their families when they viewed their new smiles for the first time.

“While in India with Operation Smile, I watched a little boy named Sarban receive a surgery that transformed his life,” Fox said. “I watched as he saw his new face in a mirror for the first time. It was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life. When you see the immediate physical change in a child with just one surgery, you know in how much that means for a child’s life.”

For six years, Fox played the role of the dedicated yet troubled surgeon, Dr. Jack Shephard, on Lost. Fox was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy Award, and shared the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for his role in Lost. Fox was also seen in the feature films “We Are Marshall,” “Speed Racer” and “Vantage Point.”

During the medical mission, Fox was particularly affected by five-year-old Sarban. Despite a disfiguring cleft lip, Sarban’s joy for life was evident and he quickly captured the hearts of Fox and all the medical volunteers. On surgery morning, Sarban laughed with Fox and blew bubbles – he had no fear of the surgery.

Sarban is the eldest child in his family – but not the firstborn. His older brother died only nine days after birth, and his older sister died when she was two years old. Now, as the surviving oldest son, he is the pride and joy of his father. Sarban’s father works on a tea plantation; when there is work, he can earn 1200 rupees a month – about $30. He and his small son traveled more than eight hours to reach Operation Smile’s medical mission site.

“They tease me and call me names,” said Sarban. “I cry and run home when they tease me. I just want my lip to be better. Sometimes, when I walk down the street, people hit me. It makes me too sad to tell you what happens to me.”

After the surgery, the stress and desperation that previously lined the face of Sarban’s father was replaced with pure joy. “When they told me that he was ready for surgery, that moment was the happiest moment in my life,” Sarban’s father said. “I thought my dream had come true. Now that I see him, I am the happiest father in the world.”

Matthew Fox Set for UK Stage Debut

The star of US TV series Lost, Matthew Fox, is to make his British stage debut in the world premiere of a new play by US writer Neil LaBute.

Fox, who played Dr Jack Shephard in the desert-island TV drama, will star alongside British actress Olivia Williams.

In A Forest, Dark And Deep is described as a comedy which “escalates into a psychological thriller”.

It is due to open at London’s Vaudeville Theatre in March 2011.

Fox stars as Bobby – who helps his sister Betty (Williams), clear out her cabin in the forest.

The 44-year-old actor told the BBC that he wanted to return to the theatre partly because of working on a marathon TV series like Lost, which ended after six years in May.

“I’ve done two six-year television shows now,” Fox said. “It’s got be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 275 hours of television, and a handful of films.”

He added: “I never really think of it in terms of theatre, film, TV – what’s going to be next for me? I want to get involved in stories that speak to me. This one happened to be a play in the West End of London which has always been a dream of mine.”

Writer and director LaBute’s plays include The Shape Of Things, Fat Pig, The Mercy Seat and Some Girl(s), which starred former Friends actor David Schwimmer in London in 2005.

LaBute said of his new play: “It was a treat to write. I love the dynamics of family and men and women clashing.”

His film work includes In the Company of Men, Nurse Betty, The Wicker Man and Death at a Funeral.

The play is also the first time Olivia Williams has appeared in the commercial heart of the West End. Her previous theatre roles have been at the National Theatre and the Barbican. Her film credits include The Sixth Sense, An Education and The Ghost.

The production begins previews from 3 March and runs until 4 June.

Years ago his eye opened and years later it closes. And in that blink is an entire universe. That’s so great.”

Emerson’s Pick: “I admire Julianna Margulies and she is one of Carrie’s (Preston, Emerson’s wife) best friends. We never miss her. This is a very deep pool of talented players but I think she has momentum and the show is great.”

Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm),  Alec Baldwin (30 Rock),  Matthew Morrison (Glee),  Steve Carell (The Office),  Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory),  Tony Shalhoub (Monk)

Emerson’s Pick: “I think a person’s reaction to comedy is chemical and defies analysis. Jim Parsons, for whatever reason, just tickles me. He also fulfills the haven’t-won-one requirement. I just saw Tony Shalhoub on Broadway and he was hilarious. But he’s won before. I’m in an expansive mood. I want this to go around.”

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series
Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) , Tina Fey (30 Rock) , Julia Louis-Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) , Lea Michele (Glee) , Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation)

Emerson’s Pick: “This is a vote for my sentimental favorite and an actress I admire. Edie Falco is something else to watch on that show. And it’s beautiful that I don’t know if I want to laugh or cry when I watch it.”

Emerson’s Pick: ”I would call it a toss-up for the women from ‘A Good Wife.’ They’re both so intriguing. I’m happy to have them nominated.”

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series
John Slattery (Mad Men),  Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) , Martin Short (Damages),  Terry O’Quinn (Lost) , Michael Emerson (Lost) , Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)

Emerson’s Pick: This one gets tricky! ”Let say that actors who appear on ‘Lost’ cancel each other out. Then let’s say Aaron Paul is an astonishing actor. Maybe it’s his year. And besides, I have to recuse myself and pick the non-Lost player.

“This conversation makes me very nervous.”

Emerson’s too good an actor to let that nervousness show on Sunday. But win or lose, we’ll know what’s going on in his mind. And if he takes home the hardware, Emerson said he will be especially proud for winning in such a critically acclaimed season.

“We are living through the second Golden Age of Television,” Emerson said. “There’s a lot of great stuff out there.”
