‘Game of Thrones’ author George R.R. Martin criticized LOST’s ending in a recent interview for the New Yorker:

Martin knows what it’s like to be provoked by a serial entertainment. He experienced it himself as a faithful viewer of “Lost,” the ABC adventure series about a group of castaways trapped on a mysterious island. “I kept watching it and I was fascinated,” he recalls. “They’d introduce these things and I thought that I knew where it was going. Then they’d introduce and I’d rethink it.” Like many “Lost” fans, Martin resented the series’s mystical ending, which left dozens of narrative threads dangling. “We watched it every week trying to figure it out, and as it got deeper and deeper I kept saying, ‘They better have something good in mind for the end. This end better pay off here.’ And then I felt so cheated when we got to the conclusion.”

Martin says he’s terrified that he’ll “fuck it up” at the end of  the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ saga and “do a Lost.” Last night, Damon Lindelof reacted to this on his Twitter account:

While chatting with actress Michelle Rodriguez yesterday to promote her new alien invasion flick BATTLE: LA (which opens March 11), we couldn’t resist asking her what she thought about the finale of LOST (a show in which she played Ana Lucia Cortez).

“Come on – heaven and hell, man?” says Rodriguez. “I thought you guys were going to get scientific with it, other dimensions with it, like [Stephen]  Hawking’s with it, but no man,  you had to go the heaven and hell route.  It really gnarlied me out.  I was saddened by that. I thought they were going to go there. It’s okay. It’s a TV show. Who didn’t enjoy that ride? It was a cool ride – always wondering what’s going to happen.”

While she was only on for two seasons (and a couple of cameos toward the end), she says she relished the time she spent in Hawaii filming the series.

“Hawaii for me,  that was home,” says Rodriguez. “I breathed the air there and I was making love to nature. I’m like a lesbo, because nature is a chick, you know what I mean. So I was totally into it and it was more about being in Hawaii and enjoying that experience than anything. It came second nature to me to be working there.”

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, you’ll find what represents the first lengthy sit-down interview Cuse and Lindelof have given about “The End,” and you’ll hear both of them elaborate on the positive and negative reactions to their work. “It was never going to be possible for us to fulfill everyone’s expectations or desires for the show,” says Cuse. “But the fact that there seems to be a significant amount of people for whom the finale was very meaningful is very gratifying.” Adds Lindelof: “To be clear, we are not indifferent to fan reaction. We care about what they think. A lot. And the hardest part for me about the end of Lost has been the people who are so angry at the show. To read that I personally wasted the last six years of your life, or to read that people think we lied to them — it’s very hurtful. It sucks to hear that.”

My interview with Lindelof and Cuse was conducted over lunch in Los Angeles in mid-July, a few days after Lost was honored with 12 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama. Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, and Michael Emerson were all nominated for their acting, and Cuse and Lindelof were nominated for the script they wrote for “The End.” Over the course of 90 minutes, the producers addressed various aspects of the final season, from Cuse’s joy in writing John Locke to Lindelof’s personal identification with Jack Shephard’s flawed character. What was most meaningful to me was hearing the producers speak, with great emotion, about how their relationships with their fathers influenced the writing of Lost and especially the last scenes of the series. No, they didn’t offer answers to specific unresolved mysteries. But they did discuss why they wanted to leave many things unresolved, and they respond to the charge that failing to offer resolution was seen by some as a creative cop-out. They talked about a lot of other things, too, not all of which is represented in the magazine space. In the coming weeks, I’ll share more of my interview with them in my last few Doc Jensen/Lost columns, which you can expect toward the end of the month. It will include, at long last, the conclusion of my final theory of Lost (and how the movie Inception completely messed it all up) and my full report about my trip to the set of “The End.”

After the [TCA] awards show, I asked Lindelof about the end credits of the last “Lost” episode which showed pictures of the plane wreckage on the beach, which some viewers interpreted to mean that everyone died when the plane crashed. ABC had said they put that footage there, which turns out to be sort of true.

Lindelof said three days before air he got a call from someone at the studio who said the network planned to run a “Cougar Town” spot over the end credits of “Lost” and everyone agreed that would have been inappropriate. Producers’ first choice was to just go to black but the network feared that would set a precedent, there might be issues with the unions over credits and then everyone would want to run credits over black (heaven forbid!). So producers suggested using B-roll footage of the empty hatch, the empty beach camp, whatever they could find. Turned out no such footage existed but there was footage of the empty, broken plane fuselage. No one thought when it cut together it would be interpreted the way it was but Lindelof said he didn’t know of any other way he would do it differently if he had it to do over because no matter what images they put there, he figures viewers would pick them apart.

Lindelof also said he’ll never talk about what producers’ artistic intention was with the finale because he feels like it was very simple and very clear and no matter what he says, some viewers won’t believe him.

The Hollywood Reporter: An Emmy nom at long last! Are you feeling vindicated?

Fox: I had no idea the awards were being announced that day, but it’s very nice to be recognized. I thought the show had a really great season, especially with expectations being so enormous. I think that’s really saying something. I’m just looking forward to partying with the cast and raising a glass to the show.

THR: The series finale met mixed reviews among fans and critics. What’s been your response?

Fox: Obviously, the show left room for interpretation when the white light poured through. I don’t pay attention to how it was received. Damon (Lindelof) told me the ending two months prior and I was extremely moved. I thought it was absolutely beautiful.

THR: Dr. Jack Shephard was essentially the show’s “everyman” character. How difficult was it channeling such an iconic role?

Fox: I put a lot of myself into him, so it was tremendously emotional. He started as the hero of the show and we thought the audience would be bored out of their minds if he were the knight in shining armor all the time. We wanted to take the first four years and destroy him. So, that’s what we did. And in the end, Jack redeemed himself before he could move on; I think that’s why I was nominated. It has more to do with Jack than anything I was doing for six years.

THR: What did the show’s first Emmy win in 2005 for outstanding drama series mean to you?

Fox: It meant that when the show won, a whole bunch of people jumped on the bandwagon that shouldn’t have. To be honest, people felt like they were missing out, so they came, tested it and left. Then it was perceived that the show took a turn for the worst, and it
wasn’t. They weren’t ever going to be “Lost” fans.

THR: You have said that “Lost” will be your final affair with television. Really?

Fox: I’ve done 300 hours of television. I’ve spent 12 years operating between two characters — six years on “Party of Five” and six years on “Lost” — and I’m at a point in my career where I want more flexibility. I want to call my own shots: when I’m working and when I’m not. It doesn’t have anything to do with snobbery. Some of the best writing is on television right now.

THR: If you could step into the character of any of your fellow lead actor nominees, comedy or drama, who would it be?

Fox: Michael C. Hall’s role in “Dexter” would be very interesting. To play a serial killer in a lead role, that’s pretty cool!
