Previously, on Lost: Ben spins the big wheel and wins a free trip to Tunisia, while Daniel, Juliet, Sawyer and the gang get a free trip to the Twilight Zone. Speaking of Daniel, while he’s on one of the many jumps through time, he finds Desmond in the old Hatch and tells him to find his Mum in Oxford. Back in the present – OUR current present, and the present of the Oceanic 6 that got off the island, not the other survivors left behind because it’s actually three years earlier for them, well, kinda sorta since they’re skipping around through time … oh never mind – Desmond wakes up in a sweat next to Penny and suddenly remembers Daniel visiting him in the hatch. The chase is on.

This week on Lost: The left-behinders jump once again and find themselves eyeball-deep in trouble, as usual. Daniel, Charlotte and Miles almost get blown all to hell by some Claymore anti-personnel mines along a creek bed, so, naturally I think they’ve jumped back no further than the Vietnam era. Well, wrong, they eventually find out they’re in 1954, which is verrry interesting because the M18 was in VERY limited testing production at that time and it’s unlikely that some military engineers hanging around the asshole of the Pacific are going to be carrying ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES that are rarer than a three-dollar bill. But, you know, we’re dealing with a time-traveling island and a thousand-year-old man here, so I guess we’ll just let that one go.

Claymore mine. See that text on the front, there, that says “FRONT TOWARD ENEMY”? Yeah, well, that wasn’t on the M18 available to the military in 1954. Hey, I’m just sayin’.

Ahem, anywho, they all get captured by some early Others and taken back to a military camp lead by, who else, Richard Alpert. Meanwhile, Locke, Juliet and Sawyer capture some Others of their own. They’re speaking in a secret Other language, known as Latin. Juliet speaks it. Cuz she’s an other, natch. They extract a little info. Juliet demands to see Richard, and one of the Others jumps up and snaps the other guys neck and runs off into the jungle. Well, then.

Back with Desmond and Penny, they’re in jolly old England now and, to make a long story short, Desmond goes to Oxford, gets some clues, finds the girl (Teresa) that Daniel fucked up with some time travel experiments, gets a bit fed up with it all and finally just goes and sees Charles Widmore like he should have done in the first damn place. Charles tells Desmond that Daniel’s mum is in LA – of course – and off Des goes. Oh yeah, and Desmond and Penny have a son now, named Charlie. It’s touching, really it is.

Back on the island, Daniel has convinced Richard and the others that he can help them with their little “problem” – an H bomb left on the island by the military, named Jughead. He goes off with Ellie, a spunky little blonde with a ‘tude and a rifle. He promptly tells her to bury it and her problem is solved. She queries and he tells her he knows because in 50 years the island is still there. Yup, he’s a time-traveler. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, blondie.

The neck-snapping Other has made it back to camp now and so has Locke, Juliet and Sawyer. Locke goes off into camp to confront Richard, where he promptly tells him his tale and shows him the compass given to him by Richard in the future. A whole big can of temporal worms just got opened up right there. Locke tells Richard that if he doesn’t believe him, he should come visit Locke when he’s born – two years from now. Cool. Oh, and just so you know, the guy that snapped the Other guy’s neck before running back to Richard? None other than Charles Widmore. Uh huh. Total Lost moment there. I got damn near giddy.

Before Locke can get Richard to tell him how to get off the island, there’s another flash and they’re in another time. Pretty soon, beautiful Charlotte is face down in the dirt and getting ready to dance the rumba with the Grim Reaper. Locke, meanwhile, has leaped into the body of an early-’60s lounge singer whose pantyhose is riding up something fierce and whose manager wants his cut and wants it now. Oh, boy.*

Cue the thonk!

A quintessential Lost episode, through and through, with lots of nice twists and turns and a lovely surprise at the end. My childlike, adventurous side was completely enthralled. My brain, however, was a bit more concerned with this episode’s introduction of some classic temporal paradoxes – and I’m not just talking about out-of-place Claymores.

I’M MY OWN GRANDPA
Unless you’ve never watched any sort of movie or television show that deals even remotely with time travel, or didn’t pay attention in philosophy class, you will have heard of the grandfather paradox. This paradox was popularized by sci-fi writer Rene Barjavel in the early ’40s and proposes the quandary of thought where one could travel back in time and murder their grandfather before they were born, thus ensuring their birth never happened, and therefore making it impossible to travel back in time to murder the grandfather in the first place. This is one of the most classic philosophical questions regarding the possibility of time travel, and a derivation of this paradox is in play on the island: Hedges Theory.

Hedges Theory states that time travel is impossible because if one were to have a reason to travel back in time, and one changed things to make a correction to the timeline, then there would no longer be a reason to go back in time to make the fix. Got that? In essence, any changes that may be made to the timeline in the past would affect the present time that the traveler experienced, giving them no reason, and possibly no means, to travel back in time. In some ways, this is happening with Locke and Richard in their exchanges. The more Locke shares with Richard in the past, the more it affects Locke and Richard’s timeline in the present/future. We can beat this paradox, however, with the Novikov self-consistency principle.

This principle is pretty much what Daniel was spouting off about in the season premiere. He explained to the left-behinders basically that “whatever has happened has happened, and you can’t change it.” Some call it destiny, but temporal philosophers call it sell-consistency. Here’s how Locke and Richard’s strings (if you will) are entwined in such a way to be self-consistent within their timelines:

1. Richard gives Locke the compass sometime in the past/present/future (or at least sometime during “The Lie.”
2. Locke, now back in the past before he was born, tells Richard about the compass and gives it to him. He also tells Richard that he is his leader and that he’ll be born in two years time.
3. Richard visits Locke when he’s five years old (we look at this more closely in my recap/analysis of “Cabin Fever” last season) and wants him to choose among six objects which of them are already his. Locke chooses the granules of sand and the compass that Locke, himself, provided for Richard in the past. Locke also claims the knife, which was not a wise choice. Richard immediately knows that Locke is either not ready or not the chosen leader, after all. He grabs the compass and leaves. Sometime in the future, after the White Event and all the jumping, Richard gives the compass to Locke (1), and the pattern starts anew.

This temporal pattern is indicative of the self-consistency principle. Locke needs a certain push at a young age to search out his purpose and eventually find the island. The push is provided by Richard Alpert, along with some items, one of which is a compass. Years later, Locke comes across the very same compass and is provided an opportunity to go back in time and share his story with Richard. Richard takes his information and the compass and sets out to see if Locke is who he says he is, and monitor Locke’s progress and possibly offer a push when needed. Thus, Locke becomes the man he needs to be to find the island and become the Other’s new leader. Self-fulfilling prophecy, if you will. Or, destiny, by another term that Locke might prefer.

That issue seems to be all wrapped up snug and cozy, doesn’t it? Well, not really. The next question that should be coming into all of your minds is where did the compass come from?. If Richard gave Locke the compass in the “future” and Locke brought it back with him to the “past” to give to Richard so that he could use it throughout Locke’s life and then give it back to Locke in the future so he could bring it back to the past … where does the compass originate? Herein lies one of the greatest paradoxes inherent in some self-consistency scenarios. One possible answer is that the compass has always existed in the same time loop. That’s a pretty deep concept to wrap your mind around, and it won’t help you sleep at night, believe me. Another answer is that this particular thread of time has been evolving with each successive loop. Wait, what do I mean by each successive loop?. Well, that’s another rabbit hole I considered jumping down this week, but it’s getting late and that’s a major box that would make Pandora jealous. So … I will save that bit of temporal philosophy for another week, after I see more of the compass’s fate.

DECEIT LIES IN WAIT WITH THE YOUNG
So … Charles Widmore was once an Other. We all might have suspected as much. It’s no wonder that he wants to get back to the island so desperately. Obviously, Widmore was ousted from Richard’s timeless bosom at one point in the past, but for what we know not. I’m guessing his mean streak of snapping necks at a moment’s notice may have had something to do with it.

As for Miss Ellie – she of the golden hair, the ‘tude and the rifle – Daniel seems to think she looks like someone, someone he knows very well. Since she seems to be about the same age as Widmore while on the island, and Daniel is roughly the same age as Penny, my best guess is that Ellie is Daniel’s mum – which is more than likely Mrs. Hawking. I’d love to hear any other theories, if you have them, as this young lady was provided with far too much screen time and armaments to just be a throwaway character.

Oh, uh … hey gurrrrl. You’re way too pretty to grow up to be so damn scary.

THE CONSTANTLY CHANGING CONSTANT
Last week I posited my theory on the island being the constant for most of the left-behinders, and the Oceanic 6 filling in the gap for all the of the survivors to act as the island’s constant in return. I still have faith in my theory, as wacky as it may seem. However, I’m starting to entertain an alternative. Certainly, it seems as though Richard has become Locke’s true constant, as Locke is not concerned with jumping about since he knows there’s one person that will always be there on the other end. There is a possibility that Richard may act as the constant for the other left-behinders, as well. The reason Charlotte is not affected by Richard is probably because of her lack of knowledge of Richard. She truly is lost amongst the rest, and her personal story and journey to the island does not intimately entwine her with the rest.

Charlotte’s only hope, it seems, is Daniel. Daniel, obviously, has the greatest grasp of the temporal shenanigans going on, and, as evidenced by his appearance down in the Swan during its Dharma heydays, has done more than his fair share of jumping about. There is a small chance that Daniel will be able to jump outside the rules, as he stated about Desmond. In doing so, Daniel could harness the jumping to appear to Charlotte in her past and her future, thus giving her a constant. Of course, Daniel could also have another plan for all this involving his mother, which we may see unfold in a bit. Then again, Charlotte may just end up like all the poor Dharma bunnies, after all. Let’s hope not. She’s pretty.

DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO LOTS OF CONCRETE?
And, lastly, Jughead. Where have we seen lots of concrete before on the island? Particularly concrete surrounding a large electromagnetic force that could either contain a large atomic blast or use its power to force open a temporal gate that sends the energy into a loop until it dissipates? Yup. As for how it all ties into what the hell’s going on, I’ve got nothing. Just yet, mind you. Give me time.

And that about wraps it up for this week. I promised some extracurricular studies for those interested in temporal theory from other media, but I will only give you a small taste and save the rest to sprinkle out among the other weeks. Initial Thoughts

A couple of thoughts from last week. Hurley and Kate *just* miss each other at the gas station. This goes along with the idea of the show that everyone is connected somehow, like six degrees of separation. Or I saw a movie once and the whole time it followed an item as it got passed from person to person. I think it was Madonna’s pap smear but don’t quote me. Anyway, how we are all connected somehow.

I don’t really like the pop ups. Maybe I’m missing stuff, you tell me if you watch them. But it’s like ABC’s attempt to get new viewers up to speed. To me, I feel cheated somehow that newbs are getting catch ups and we’ve had to do four years of hard work. But, if it brings new viewers and ratings then that’s a good thing.

Ben helped Jack overcome his Oxy habit. Locke helped Charlie kick his heroin habit. I think Ben actually cares somewhat for Jack. Yes, I know he has other reasons for him to be sober, but coupled with his defense of Jack to Jill, I think he cares. Some.

1. Let’s just start but talking about how freaking cute Desmond’s son is. Wow!

2. Desmond talking to his son about the island, Great Britain, like it was “the” island was interesting. There are mountains and glens and monsters… And is he foreshadowing saying he’ll be there again?

3. They sure are killing a bunch of the extras off. Economy is bad, must save money somewhere I guess.

4. Was it just me, or were the colors weird in tonight’s episode? I’m hoping it’s just because of the film they used and not supposed to resemble something with time.

5. Here is my sister’s theory (and some embellishments by me). Penny has the baby, Charlie. Could this be our Charlie? When Des is on the island “seeing” Charlie die, it’s not because he sees the future but because he’s lived it already. Charlie could have been raised by the parents we saw initially because they had to “hide” him from Ben or maybe Widmore Sr. wanted to get his hands on him.

6. Or, they just named him after our Charlie.

7. Penny sure is a downer. “Also where he broke her (Penny) heart.” and “You forgot to tell him about his grandfather.”

8. Why are there government soldiers invading the island? Somehow, Richard’s people manage to eliminate them. Then they figure out how to “move” the island so that they can’t get back.

9. Jughead. The bomb. Must be buried in the hatch (what used to be the hatch). Remember that Sayid talks about the concrete wall down in the hatch and how thick it was. And that it was magnetic.

10. So the blonde woman that has Dan under the gun and takes him to the bomb is the same as “Teresa Spencer” the woman in the “coma” back in London. She must be the “poor woman” that the guy who finds Des in Dan’s old office is referring to.

11. Does Penny know more than she let’s on? Why does she make him promise never to go back to the island? I understand that she had a terrible time finding him, but as long as they are together why would she be so dead set against it? Maybe she knows things about the island in her research to find Des.

12. And, the government was trying to bomb the island? Why? What do they know?

13. I love that Juliet calls the soldiers “Others.” Like the writers are saying “Yes, we know you call them that,” and that is how they get the point across to us who they are.

14. Apparently these are also the “Others” that kill off the Dharma Initiative.

15. “Four” US soldiers. There is one of our numbers.

16. Juliet says, “Richard has always been here,” assuming she means the camp. But the camp looks like where they end up building “Otherville.”

17. Interesting that they took Dan out of the system showing he was a professor.

18. What I don’t understand is that if Dan’s work was to be kept secret, why did they leave all of his equipment (beside the fact that Des has to find it in the storyline). And what’s up with the mystery “janitor” that happens in and gives Des a little bit of information. And why is the janitor dressed so old fashioned? Does anyone besides Brad Pitt wear those hats these days? And who else was poking around for Dan’s work?

19. Looks like “Ellie,” the girl that has Dan at gunpoint, is the girl who is in the “coma” back at Oxford. oops, I already said that. Must be tired.

20. Dan knows the bomb is unstable because it was probably what was behind the wall when Marvin Candle’s group was drilling there.

21. Glad Sawyer got some good lines this week. “Well, maybe I should have said it in my secret language.”

22. So Locke owns this island my friends. The Losties are his people and The Others are his people. All your base belongs to…. Locke!

23. Teresa is traveling big time. It reminds me of the Matrix when they have them in the pods, feeding them, and their minds live in the “world.” I’m sure Mr Widmore was so kind to pay for Teresa’s care so no one found out about her. If she’s seeing her dead dad then she’s definitely traveling around.

24. Widmore has to be Dan’s dad. Could be Richard but more than likely Widmore. Explains why he funded his research (beyond interest in the topic). Age is appropriate.

25. Yeah, some “sodding” old man knows the island better than you Jones!

26. Richard is “old” but by what standard? I watched Aeon Flux this past weekend and it got me thinking. In the movie, the women can’t have children so until they figure out the problem, they clone children from their own DNA. Then the “leaders” teach the cloned child of themselves all about their lives and give them their memories. So in essence it seems like they have years and years of memories. Maybe Richard is a clone. Does it make more sense that he doesn’t age? Or is he just an aberration created by the smoke monster (like Yemmi or Christian)?

27. So if the blonde holding Dan at gunpoint isn’t Teresa, could she be Mrs Hawkins? Still thinking she’s his mother, too. She knows the island. She must be smart is some capacity to be chosen to be on the island. Why she wants to get back to the island. How she knows about the island.

28. Desmond, Desmond. What are you thinking going to Widmore? Like the guy was just going to tell him what he wanted to know with no strings. Widmore is so good that I wanted to believe that he was genuinely pooping himself when he saw Des but he probably already knew he was off the island and left him alone so as to not lead Ben to Penny. I do believe that Widmore wants Des to hide because Penny won’t leave him and Ben really would like to retaliate and kill Widmore’s daughter.

29. And I love Locke just marching into the camp. And how *did* Richard know when he would see Locke again unless Richard already has the memories when he meets up with Locke so he knows the next time we’ll see him.

30. I think that Widmore came to see Penny on the boat. That’s how she knows that Desmond is lying. Plus she just seems to be hiding something.

31. Now we know why Richard went and saw Locke in the hospital.

32. Maybe I’m tired but it looks like the coloring goes back to normal after they leave the “past.”

*** back on the ranch… aka; thoughts a few days later ***

1. The title “Jughead.” We know that the bomb was called “Jughead” but there has to be more significance. I still think that the leaking radiation has something to do with why women can’t carry babies to term. Maybe Dan, Charlotte and Miles are the last babies conceived on the island so they are special. Since we know that the island has healing qualities, we have wondered how Ben got a tumor on his spine. He was probably working too close to Jughead and was exposed to small quantities of the radiation. If Dan hadn’t have shown up and told them what to do with it, what would they have done with the bomb? Maybe all of this has happened before and Jughead represents a serious problem that could not have been fixed without Dan so all of the events must happen this way. And unless all of the events (starting with the plane crash) happened then the island may not have been been there.

2. The American government is coming in 1954 to the island. Why do they want to kill the “Hostiles?” Couldn’t they have just rounded them up and put them in a prison camp? Are we sure it’s the government or perhaps ex military? Keemy and the gang looked to be military also but weren’t working for the government. Maybe it’s a “Hatfield and McCoy” scuffle that has been going on for hundreds of years and not just Ben Vs. Widmore.

3. So it’s Oxford University and in the 10 – 20 years in between when Des met Dan on campus and now they haven’t cleaned up the office for other use? Or, did Dan *just* abandon the office right before he left for the island and it hasn’t been long enough to get it cleaned out? If that’s the case, there must have been an incredible offer to just leave all of his time travel research like that. Maybe *someone* convinced him to leave (like, say, Widmore)? From the state of the office I’d say he left in a big hurry.

4. Dan tells Miles and Charlotte that they just have to hang tight until everything disappears but can’t predict when. What if it’s every 108 minutes that they travel? I’m thinking that the numbers might come in play here as to how the time shift works.

5. Watching back, Juliet doesn’t know how far in the past they are so how does she know to ask if Richard is at the camp? I just don’t want to believe that he’s really, truthfully “very” old but how else would she know he’d be there?

6. Locke can’t shoot “Jones” because he’s one of his people. Remember that Juliet was branded for killing Pickett (the guy who was going to kill Sawyer and Kate) so it must be against their rules to kill one of your own. Keemy also broke the rules when he killed Alex.

7. It does look like Teresa is the same girl that is in the picture, but the picture is old (check out Dan’s mullet). Dan doesn’t seem the type to leave someone behind that he cared for so again, something must have happened to make him just take off and then Widmore to take care of Teresa in his absence.

8. I can’t make up my mind about Ellie. Dan is walking with her and she tells him to quit looking at her to which he apologizes and tells her she looks just like someone he used to know. She does look like Teresa (see picture above) but it also could be because he realizes he’s talking to his mom.

9. Widmore was on the island as a young man (at least probably about age 18 if not younger). He probably thinks as well as he knows the island that he’s the one that’s going to take over as the leader. Then along comes Ben. Ben is groomed to be the leader. I’m guessing somewhere along the way Widmore is exiled from the island. Now he holds a grudge against Ben for that and because Widmore is obviously a hot head (breaking the neck of his colleague who tells Juliet where the camp is). But he hasn’t been to the island in at least 20 years so I wonder if at some point he had come back after his younger days as a solider. Perhaps he stayed for quite a while. Maybe Ellie was the love of Ben and Widmore and that had something to do with it (we know how Ben falls madly in love with women and wants them all to himself). I think this all speaks to where the rivalry between Ben and Widmore started for the island.

10.  I found this arrow theory from Doc Jensen very intriguing and something I had not caught: My “Arrow” Theory. Adam mentioned this in his recap. Have you noticed the recurring arrow symbolism this season? Episode 1: Pierre Chang produces the orientation film for a Dharma station called “The Arrow.” Episode 2: The Left Behinders are attacked by flaming arrows. And now, Episode 3: Arrows everywhere, in the text (see: the Others’ archery brigade) and the subtext. A leaking or missing hydrogen bomb is known as a “Broken Arrow” event in military parlance.  In physics, the “Arrow of Time” is the name of a body of theories pertaining to the nature of time; the term “broken arrow” is used to characterize an idea like time loops. Google “broken arrow” and you’ll get any number of movies, TV shows and songs about Native Americans… and wouldn’t you know, “Jughead” was a peek into the past of the Island’s indigenous peeps, the Others. But the coolest arrow connection comes via the Other cutie with the shot gun, British accent, and terse line readings: Ellie. Short for Eleanor, which is French for “the Other.” (Or so wikipedia tells me; I don’t speak it. Me stupid American.) On a whim, I combined “Ellie” and “Eleanor” and “Arrow,” and came back with an awesome connection: Ellie Arroway, the heroine of Carl Sagan’s novel Contact, which was adapted into the Jodie Foster film of the same name. I’m going to leave it to you to explore the significance, but Sagan’s story certainly resonates with Lost themes, and perhaps functions as a clue to wormhole theory.

Mary Ann Taheny, the Hawaii-based actress who played the role of Jenna (the Oceanic Airlines gate 23 attendant) back in Season One, reappeared on last night’s episode “Jughead” as a secretary at Oxford University.

According to ABC’s official press release for this episode, she was playing a different character, called Moira.

If you watched the enhanced version of “The Lie” tonight, you were treated to a couple Easter eggs. OK, maybe only one counts. First, we learned that Ms. Hawking’s first name is Eloise. Sound familiar? Vaguely rat-like? It’s the same name given to the mouse Dan “unstuck” from time at Oxford. Second, did anyone else see Walt in that Tyson chicken commercial? Alright. It’s not directly related. It was weird, though, right?

Those of us who felt overwhelmed by the time jumps in the season opener (myself included), will be glad to know the island cooled it with flashes this week. This revealed an interesting new spin on the storytelling this year. It seems likely that the island will stay in a particular time period long enough for us to get a convenient history. This episode also felt like it had more of a classic Lost structure as its’ flash-forwards centered on one character. It doesn’t mean the paced has slowed any, though. What do you expect from a TV show that begins with a woman whom we’ve never seen pregnant in labor?

Penny gave birth to a remarkably clean little boy on their boat. Turns out it’s not anchored in the Mediterranean. I’m not sure where it is, but then, neither is Widmore. Penny hasn’t spoken to him since Desmond’s return. They name the boy Charlie and the three of them live on this little boat for three years. When Charlie is older, Desmond tells him about a magical island with monsters and deep lochs: Scotland. It’s clever wordplay. Our island has it’s own monsters and deep Lockes to contend with.

When Desmond finally, in 2007, remembered meeting Daniel at the hatch, Penny asked the question on everyone’s mind. Why now? He says he doesn’t know but that he has to find Daniel’s mom. He only has to go to Oxford. He’ll be done with this today, he says. Obviously Desmond and Penny don’t stay in one place too long. They are currently docked in England. Charlie was born some place South Pacific-esque. Desmond says he’s not going back to the island. Strange, then, that he spends all his time doing the thing that got him there in the first place – sailing.

There’s no record of Faraday at Oxford, or at least that’s the official word. And it seems Des is suffering some memory loss as he couldn’t give the clerk any extra information. The year he met Faraday, for instance. Feeling suspicious, Desmond breaks a fumigation seal on Dan’s lab in the attic of the physics building. The chalkboard has been erased but all the equipment is there. He finds a picture on the floor of Faraday and an unknown girl, the glass broken. A maintenance man enters the lab. He tells Desmond he’s not the first one who’s been poking around and that Faraday’s record at Oxford was erased after “what he did to that girl”. Desmond agrees to not tell anyone what he found.

Desmond then goes to find Teresa Spencer, presumably the girl in the photo. She seems to have symptoms of temporal displacement. Her sister tells him that Daniel abandoned her and that Widmore, who’d funded his research, was covering Teresa’s medical care.

Desmond goes to Widmore for answers. He tells Charles what he’s learned and asks how to find Faraday’s mother. Widmore tells him to keep Penny safe. He says the battle for the island goes back many years and that he and Penny are not involved. He gives him the address. Desmond would later lie to Penny, telling her Daniel’s mom is dead. She sees through it. She says they’ll all go to find her, together.

Back on the island, Miles, Charlotte, and Faraday, along with the remaining redshirts, are hiking to the creek to meet Sawyer, Juliet, and Locke. The redshirts are quickly blown away when they set off a series of mines. A group of people, later identified as 1950′s-era Others, ambush the freighter folk. Miles says Faraday is the leader. The Others mistake them for U.S. military, a recent enemy of theirs, and take them to the island’s own Dick Clark – Richard Alpert.

The U.S. military had been planning to use the island to test a H-bomb. The Others had killed the most recent invaders but were left with one huge problem. Like the dynamite in the Black Rock, a cracked and leaking nuclear warhead named “Jughead” threatened to detonate at any time. Dan convinces Alpert that he can help by telling him he loves Charlotte, basically. I was reminded of the scene from early season 3 when Danny asked Kate if she loved Sawyer while he was beating up on him. I’ll never understand these people.

Meanwhile, Sawyer, Juliet, and Locke are also waylaid on their way to the creek.They discovered their assailants were Others when they spoke Latin. Juliet said all Others speak Latin. “It’s the language of enlightenment” Cunningham tells them they’re wasting their time. Their friends have already been captured. Juliet asks him to take them to Richard. She has him convinced when Jones breaks free and snaps Cunningham’s neck. John lets Jones escape. When Sawyer asked why, he said Jones was one of his people.

They follow Jones back to the Others’ camp. Locke decides to finish the conversation he was having with Alpert 50 years from now. Sawyer tells him he’ll just get them killed. He and Juliet go after Faraday who they believe is being led into the jungle on a “death march”.

Locke enters the camp yelling for Richard. Jones points his gun at him. John tells Richard that Jacob sent him. Richard calls Jones “Widmore” and tells him to put the gun down. John says that he is their new leader. Richard shrugs off this idea, telling him that Mittelos Leadership Academy starts at a very early age. Locke tells him that he will be born three-years from now, May 30, 1956. Check it out if he doesn’t believe him. (You will remember this thing which has not happened yet as “Cabin Fever”.)

Dan is taken to the device by Ellie. He tells her that she reminds him of someone, likely Teresa. He tells her how to patch the bomb. “Then,” he says, “bury it.” She doesn’t believe his story and pulls her gun. So, he gives her the old I’m-from-the-future-and-50-years-from-now-the-island’s-still-here line. Just then, Sawyer and Juliet sneak up behind Ellie and she drops her gun.

When the island begins to flash again. John tries again to get Richard to tell him how to get the Oceanic 6 back, but the answer to that question is not to be found here. After the time jump, the show cut back to Sawyer’s group, which included Miles and Charlotte by this time. Dan tells Charlotte that he meant what he said to Alpert about loving her. Then Charlotte falls over, half-dead and suddenly bloody.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another.

I liked this episode much more than the first two. It was more focused and the time travel elements were expressed better. It also may have contained more new information than “Because You Left” and “the Lie” combined. If the writers can keep this up, they might just top season four.
