While chatting with actress Michelle Rodriguez yesterday to promote her new alien invasion flick BATTLE: LA (which opens March 11), we couldn’t resist asking her what she thought about the finale of LOST (a show in which she played Ana Lucia Cortez).

“Come on – heaven and hell, man?” says Rodriguez. “I thought you guys were going to get scientific with it, other dimensions with it, like [Stephen]  Hawking’s with it, but no man,  you had to go the heaven and hell route.  It really gnarlied me out.  I was saddened by that. I thought they were going to go there. It’s okay. It’s a TV show. Who didn’t enjoy that ride? It was a cool ride – always wondering what’s going to happen.”

While she was only on for two seasons (and a couple of cameos toward the end), she says she relished the time she spent in Hawaii filming the series.

“Hawaii for me,  that was home,” says Rodriguez. “I breathed the air there and I was making love to nature. I’m like a lesbo, because nature is a chick, you know what I mean. So I was totally into it and it was more about being in Hawaii and enjoying that experience than anything. It came second nature to me to be working there.”

The Daily Mail has published an insightful interview with Matthew Fox. Here are some  interesting excerpts from the article:

Fox is something of an iconoclast. Mount Bachelor, in Bend, Oregon, is his home patch. Geography is not the only thing that distances him from LA. He might not be the only star who dislikes Hollywood’s latest fixations; he is, though, one of the few who will actually say it.

‘Look at 3D,’ he says. ‘That’s a major setback to good storytelling. I took my little boy to see The Last Airbender. It was an awful film. The director M Night Shyalaman hasn’t directed a decent movie since The Sixth Sense.

‘I’m disillusioned with the drift towards gratuitous entertainment, which so much of Hollywood is now. Because of the state of the economy people seem to want pure escapism. But if the roles I fight to get all go to Matt Damon, then I won’t work. I turn a lot of stuff down – big, big movies, the kind I wouldn’t want to go to the cinema to see.

‘I’m sorry, but I can’t make a movie with the blonde from ER who is starring in every single bad romantic comedy. Unless they reinvent the wheel in terms of romantic comedies – in other words, they start making them funny and romantic again – I’m not going to be starring in any of those movies.’

‘My hangar is my getaway place,’ he says. ‘Some guys have a garden shed where they can disappear. This is my sanctuary where I can get away from the world, where it’s just me, my car and my plane.’

The 44-year-old likes to be taken out of his comfort zone.

For Lost, he relocated his family to the Hawaiian island of Oahu for six years, where they filmed nine months out of 12, six days a week for up to 18 hours a day. Fox, oozing the old-school masculinity of someone like Steve McQueen, became the show’s leading star, earning £140,000 per episode by the end of its epic 121-part run.

‘After Lost, I never need to take a job for the money again. I could just stay in Bend and fly my plane.

‘A lot of the time I hate acting. It has a lot to do with the way I was brought up in a world where showing your emotions is frowned upon. It’s just not manly. I don’t do anything in life because I love doing it. It’s because I want to be good at it. It doesn’t make for an easy life.’

Three months later, in London’s West End, we meet again. Fox is to star opposite London-born Olivia Williams in U.S. playwright Neil LaBute’s In A Forest, Dark And Deep; they play highly dysfunctional, semi-estranged siblings opening old wounds while clearing out a family home. He’s far from Oregon but no less opinionated.

‘I get to say some outrageous stuff about U2 in this play. My character used to like U2. Now he thinks they’re rubbish, and I think he’s right. Everything they’ve released in the last 15 years sounds so overdone. Also, he believes passionately that rock stars shouldn’t try to save the world. I tend to agree with him. Rock stars should stick to being good rock stars.’

So far he has  chosen his Hollywood projects sparingly, appearing in the political thriller Vantage Point and Speed Racer, the follow-up film by the directors of the Matrix series.

‘The fact is that I’m far more comfortable sitting on a horse and herding cattle than walking up a red carpet. People think I’m being disingenuous when I say I don’t like the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

‘But truthfully, I can’t stand it. There are very few situations I’d less like to be in than a Hollywood premiere or an awards ceremony. They’re not what my life is about.

‘My passions lie elsewhere. There’s flying my plane, cruising in my car, and lots of other things that keep me occupied. If I’m going to party I prefer to do it outdoors.

Fox hasn’t been afraid to immerse himself in some aspects of British culture. In London last November (for the first informal read-throughs of the play) he attended his first Premier League football match.

‘I’m a big follower of the English game so I went to Arsenal v Tottenham at the Emirates stadium. I took my wife and my manager and we bumped into Thierry Henry. He’s a big fan of Lost, we had a brief chat and he asked us if we’d like to watch the game from his private box. His old club lost 3-2, but after the game Thierry took me to the changing room to meet all the players. So now I am an Arsenal supporter for the rest of my days.’

A passion for football, however, is unlikely to keep him in London for long – and he doesn’t rule out a complete change of career.

‘I don’t really see any difference between my job and my pastimes. They’re things I’m interested in. I know some Hollywood studios see me becoming a leading man on the big budget vehicles, playing the kind of roles that Steve McQueen used to excel at. But I’m not in any hurry. I’d be just as happy sitting back and watching the seasons change.

‘There’s a possibility I’ll give up acting and do something altogether different. Become an astronomer, maybe. I can think of worse ways to spend the rest of my days.’

Notes from a traveller: Matthew Fox

My wife’s Italian and so we’ve spent a lot of time in Italy. When we were just out of college we took trains and hitchhiked to the southernmost tip of the country. We were young and broke — it was a big adventure. We ate fruit from trees and raided farmers’ fields for fresh eggplant and peppers. It was very romantic.

There’s nothing better than a road trip, especially if I’m with my brothers. I really enjoy them and being out on the road clears the mind. It’s not always about the destination.

I had a wonderful time filming Lost in Hawaii. We were there for six years and we have many fond memories of the place. It was wonderful for my kids, Kyle, 12, and Byron, nine. They both fell in love with it.

Venice is my favourite winter destination. It’s quiet, foggy and very mysterious — so beautiful and serene. I feel very fortunate to have seen it through the eyes of Venetians.

Theatre is an important part of any destination for me, certainly in London and New York. I love the community experience of sitting in an audience with a bunch of people and watching actors on stage pour their hearts into a production.

Portland, Oregon is a really cool city. It’s very old and traditional but has these magnificent steel bridges. It rains a lot but I think that creates a creative energy in the city. There’s great music and art scenes, and a bunch of comedy companies.

I grew up in the mountains of Wyoming and so I love being up in the mountains and the snow. For me it’s all about big wide open spaces and a four-season climate.

I spent a summer filming Speed Racer in Berlin. It’s an amazing city. It’s a very happening place but it’s also steeped in so much history

Starring in a play in London’s West End has always been a dream of mine. I’ve visited a handful of times but have always been in and out really quickly, so I’m looking forward to spending more time in the city and getting to know it better.

“I miss it greatly,” the actor admitted with a huge sigh. “And I was very nervous when it finished because I didn’t know what was going to happen.

“All of the cast members miss the show but that’s the way it is. That’s life.

“We all knew it was going to come to an end and we knew this for quite a while, so we all started to look forward to the next challenge in our lives.

“Lost was the longest job I’ve ever had and I’m certainly in a better position than I was five years ago before my Lost experience started.

“You never know what’s around the corner – and you never know if it’s going to be good or bad.”

Your hardest decision as showrunner?
CC: Firing anybody, particularly an actor who is dismissed not for any fault of his own, but because that’s what the narrative demands.

Your favorite moment as a showrunner?
DL: Getting the call from ABC that we would get to end the series on our own terms.

What’s your reaction when you’re recognized by a fan of the show?
CC: It’s cool but weird. Never in a million years did I expect that as a TV writer I’d ever have any kind of fame. Interestingly, about half the time people think I’m Ted Danson.

Your biggest fight with the network?
DL: There was an executive in the early days who felt there was too much gunplay on the show. This forced us to resort to physical beatings and torture … which made them miss the gunplay.

Your favorite “happy accident” in writing or producing the show?
CC: It has to be casting Michael Emerson in season two for a three-episode flyer as a mysterious “Other” captured by our survivors. He went to Hawaii and just took command of the show, ended up doing eight episodes that year, became a series regular the next, and we never looked back. Looking back, it’s hard to imagine how “Lost” could ever have existed without him.

Your best collaborative moment on the set or with a network?
DL: There are so many. When the network executives finished screening the finale for the first time, we were prepared to beg them for the extra time to extend it another half an hour, but Barry Jossen just said, “You’ve got the time.” No begging necessary. That pretty much categorizes our relationship with them all the way through.

Which shows have influenced your show?
CC: Since there weren’t a lot of antecedents to “Lost,” it’s a show that was actually influenced as much or more by books than by other series. Some of the biggest influences were Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” Chronicles and certainly the Bible.

“I wanted to give up when …”
DL: The pilot premiered to huge ratings, and we realized we were gonna have to do this for a while.

What would you want to say in an Emmy acceptance speech, but won’t?
DL: “Dad, if you hadn’t done such a number on me and then died before we could fully resolve our issues, I wouldn’t be holding this right now. Thanks, man!”
CC: Ditto what Damon says. We took our shitty relationships with our dads and, as the saying goes, made those lemons into lemonade.
