Of the two famous Lost showrunners, Damon Lindelof is the one who’s had the most public success at the movies, having co-written the first Star Trek and part of the team for the sequel, plus writing the script for Prometheus, the Ridley Scott sci-fi project that isn’t an Alien prequel, no matter what you heard. But now it’s time for the other half of Lost‘s notorious duo to get into the screenwriting game. According to Deadline, Carlton Cuse will be writing an action-adventure film for Fox, with Shawn Levy on board to direct and Hugh Jackman to star.

Levy and Jackman also collaborated on the robot boxing movie Real Steel, and even though Jackman is about to reunite with his pal Darren Aronofsky to star in The Wolverine, he’s apparently anxious for a Levy reunion as well. There are no further details on what the action adventure story might entail, but given that Cuse did some uncredited work on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade back in the day– and helped create all of those fantastic Lost escape scenes– there’s plenty reason to be excited. Deadline describes the film as a “potential tent pole,” so keep an eye on Real Steel‘s performance this fall to see just how big this project might be.

In the Dharma dumps this week, Lost fans? Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse feel your pain.

This would have been the week that Lost returned to the airwaves after its typical eight-month hiatus. But now that midseason is upon us, and there’s no sign of Jack, Sawyer, Locke or Hurley on the horizon, reality has finally set in: The show’s not coming back, Kate! It’s not coming back!

As the usual Lost return date approaches, Lindelof tells TV Guide Magazine that he’s been hearing more from wistful fans coming to terms with their island fever.

“Yes, there has been some wist,” he says. “Which is appreciated more than I can articulate. As for coping, everyone has their own mechanisms.”

Lindelof is busy with his active feature career (including the next Star Trek sequel), but says he’s been able to fill some of his idle time “watching every great show I missed as a result of making Lost for six years. I’d advise starting with Battlestar Galactica, moving on to Breaking Bad and ending with The Wire. I’m convinced the best way to watch a series is to just binge.”

The writer, who co-created Lost with J.J. Abrams, says he also still regularly hears from viewers debating over the show’s merits. “Even the people who absolutely hated how we ended it still have the need to tell me this in a variety of creative ways eight months after the fact,” he says. “I used to lose sleep over this, but I’m actually starting to embrace the fact that while their assessment of my talent (or lack thereof) sometimes hurts, it’s nice to know that at least they cared enough about the show to reach out and tell me so. Repeatedly. OK, I’m still losing a little sleep over it.”

Lindelof calls it “part of the grieving process.”

Lindelof and Cuse, of course, famously negotiated an end date for Lost, allowing the producers to end the show last May, after six seasons, on their own terms. But there’s a part of them that remains nostalgic for the show, which turned the executive producing duo into stars as well.

In a recent piece for the New York Times, Cuse writes that after the end of the show he “felt relief but also great uncertainty.”

Cuse is now developing the Civil War drama Point of Honor for ABC, along with Randall Wallace (Braveheart). Getting back on the series horse, Cuse wrote in the Times, promises plenty of challenges — including the inevitable Lost comparison. “But as tumultuous as it all can be, I realize this what I truly love doing,” he wrote.

As for Lost fans adjusting to the fact that there will be no seventh season this winter, at least they can turn on Hawaii Five-0 and imagine that Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) not only survived but now speaks perfect English on a whole different island.

“Shhhh,” Lindelof quips. “That is Jin. Don’t tell.”

LOST executive producer/co-showrunner Carlton Cuse wrote a very interesting article for the New York Times in which he talks about letting go of LOST and the first steps of the creation of his next big TV project: “Point of Honor”.

LAST summer I went hiking with my teenage daughter in the Swiss Alps. On the first day we left the small village of Wengen and climbed above the timberline to a mountain outpost, Kleine Scheidegg, where we stopped to catch our breath. As I was drinking some water and taking in the awesome panorama, I noticed a hiker approaching. He was bearded and sunburned, wearing a kerosene-stained Swiss mountaineering pack and using trekking poles. I thought he was going to warn us of some danger. Instead he walked up to me and in German-accented English asked, “Are you Carlton Cuse, from ‘Lost’?” Startled, I answered, “Yes.”

“Lost” exec producer Carlton Cuse has teamed with “Secretariat” helmer Randall Wallace on a Civil War-set project for ABC.

Cuse and Wallace are cowriting the pilot script for ABC Studios. Wallace will helm the pilot should it be picked up. Both will exec produce.

Details are sketchy about the project other than that it is envisioned as an “event” series and it is set in Virginia.

Spike TV’s annual Scream awards — honoring the best in sci-fi, fantasy, comics and horror — has scored a major geek pop coup: Scream 2010 (airing Oct. 19 at 9 p.m.) will include a “Farewell Tribute To Lost” that will bring together many members of the cast for the first time since they filmed the May finale. Jorge Garcia (Hurley), Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond), and Harold Perrineau (Michael), as well as exec producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, are confirmed to appear, and additional cast members are expected to be announced soon.

Your hardest decision as showrunner?
CC: Firing anybody, particularly an actor who is dismissed not for any fault of his own, but because that’s what the narrative demands.

Your favorite moment as a showrunner?
DL: Getting the call from ABC that we would get to end the series on our own terms.

What’s your reaction when you’re recognized by a fan of the show?
CC: It’s cool but weird. Never in a million years did I expect that as a TV writer I’d ever have any kind of fame. Interestingly, about half the time people think I’m Ted Danson.

Your biggest fight with the network?
DL: There was an executive in the early days who felt there was too much gunplay on the show. This forced us to resort to physical beatings and torture … which made them miss the gunplay.

Your favorite “happy accident” in writing or producing the show?
CC: It has to be casting Michael Emerson in season two for a three-episode flyer as a mysterious “Other” captured by our survivors. He went to Hawaii and just took command of the show, ended up doing eight episodes that year, became a series regular the next, and we never looked back. Looking back, it’s hard to imagine how “Lost” could ever have existed without him.

Your best collaborative moment on the set or with a network?
DL: There are so many. When the network executives finished screening the finale for the first time, we were prepared to beg them for the extra time to extend it another half an hour, but Barry Jossen just said, “You’ve got the time.” No begging necessary. That pretty much categorizes our relationship with them all the way through.

Which shows have influenced your show?
CC: Since there weren’t a lot of antecedents to “Lost,” it’s a show that was actually influenced as much or more by books than by other series. Some of the biggest influences were Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut, C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia” Chronicles and certainly the Bible.

“I wanted to give up when …”
DL: The pilot premiered to huge ratings, and we realized we were gonna have to do this for a while.

What would you want to say in an Emmy acceptance speech, but won’t?
DL: “Dad, if you hadn’t done such a number on me and then died before we could fully resolve our issues, I wouldn’t be holding this right now. Thanks, man!”
CC: Ditto what Damon says. We took our shitty relationships with our dads and, as the saying goes, made those lemons into lemonade.

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, you’ll find what represents the first lengthy sit-down interview Cuse and Lindelof have given about “The End,” and you’ll hear both of them elaborate on the positive and negative reactions to their work. “It was never going to be possible for us to fulfill everyone’s expectations or desires for the show,” says Cuse. “But the fact that there seems to be a significant amount of people for whom the finale was very meaningful is very gratifying.” Adds Lindelof: “To be clear, we are not indifferent to fan reaction. We care about what they think. A lot. And the hardest part for me about the end of Lost has been the people who are so angry at the show. To read that I personally wasted the last six years of your life, or to read that people think we lied to them — it’s very hurtful. It sucks to hear that.”

My interview with Lindelof and Cuse was conducted over lunch in Los Angeles in mid-July, a few days after Lost was honored with 12 Emmy nominations, including a nod for Outstanding Drama. Matthew Fox, Terry O’Quinn, and Michael Emerson were all nominated for their acting, and Cuse and Lindelof were nominated for the script they wrote for “The End.” Over the course of 90 minutes, the producers addressed various aspects of the final season, from Cuse’s joy in writing John Locke to Lindelof’s personal identification with Jack Shephard’s flawed character. What was most meaningful to me was hearing the producers speak, with great emotion, about how their relationships with their fathers influenced the writing of Lost and especially the last scenes of the series. No, they didn’t offer answers to specific unresolved mysteries. But they did discuss why they wanted to leave many things unresolved, and they respond to the charge that failing to offer resolution was seen by some as a creative cop-out. They talked about a lot of other things, too, not all of which is represented in the magazine space. In the coming weeks, I’ll share more of my interview with them in my last few Doc Jensen/Lost columns, which you can expect toward the end of the month. It will include, at long last, the conclusion of my final theory of Lost (and how the movie Inception completely messed it all up) and my full report about my trip to the set of “The End.”

UPDATED: “As storytellers, you rarely get to end a story on your own terms,” executive producer Carlton Cuse tells EW. “Most shows kind of fade away or drop dead. We finished our story on our terms. Let’s face it, there were very high expectations for how Lost should end, and for us, it was enormously gratifying that we were recognized for doing a reasonably good job of ending the show.”

Executive Producer Damon Lindelof was particularly surprised by the wave of emotion he felt when Lost was announced as a contender for Outstanding Drama. “I basically started to weep,” he told EW. “I didn’t realize how much I was still holding on. My wife looked at me and asked what I was feeling, and I said ‘relief.’  You don’t want to say ‘Oh, my God I really want a nomination.’ We should just be proud of the work we did. And we are incredibly proud. But the fact that our peers still care about the show ended up meaning a lot more than I expected.

“There is kind of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind factor,” Lindelof continued. “Even with the addition of six nominees, four or five other ones easily could have been in the mix, and nobody would have said boo about it. We’re the only show in mix that is over. The fact that it got a nod in the final season is definitely gratifying.”

As for providing any kind of post-mortem about the finale, Lindelof and Cuse say they would prefer to stay mum. ”We’re not interested in dissecting our intentions and what the meaning of this or that was. It was purposeful ambiguity so fans can hopefully start to own the show for themselves.” And if they are lucky enough to take the Emmy stage come Aug. 29? Don’t expect any answers to your many burning questions then, either. Quips Cuse, “We will be so ecstatic to be on stage, we will be vapor-locked. I don’t know if, in that 30-second countdown, we’ll be able to provide a satisfying explanation for the finale.”

Lindelof: “It sounds so cliche that it’s great to be nominated but that’s what we’re basking in now. We don’t take this for granted. And the fact that the love was spread to Michael Giacchino, Jack Bender, the sound mixers and art direction is great. It’ll be cool to put on the monkey suits again and get together one last time.”

Cuse: “My strategy is to sleep through these type of things. I checked my phone and saw there were a lot of emails. Bad news avoids you like the plague. … For Matthew (Fox) , he’s labored almost unfairly on a show that’s more ensemble-oriented than the guys he’s competing aginst. Fortunately, the finale was Matthew-centric and he was finally given a chance to be front and center in such a way that allows voters to take notice. He was so critical to our show.”
