“Lost” exec producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis have sold their hourlong drama script “Once Upon a Time” to ABC.

Pilot, from ABC Studios, is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy with a strong mystery element. Premise is a modern-day take on fairy tales, with a female protagonist who comes from a unique background. Show takes place in a small Maine town during the present time.

Despite the fairy tale premise, show will have a strong human emotional center. Similar to “Lost,” there will be a large ensemble.

“Lost” exec producer Damon Lindelof will consult.

Horowitz and Kitsis had the idea for the show seven years ago, prior to coming aboard “Lost.” The pair, who are longtime writing partners, didn’t approach ABC with the pitch until “Lost” finished its run in May. Besides exec producing and writing “Lost,” Horowitz and Kitsis wrote the upcoming pic “Tron: Legacy” as well as the “Tron” sequel. They’re also penning “Ouija,” the Universal pic based on the Hasbro property.

In what is sure to be one of the hottest properties of the rapidly approaching pilot season, former Lost executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are developing a fairy-tale-themed drama series. Oh, and they’re getting a little help from—stop me if you’ve heard of this guy—Damon Freakin’ Lindelof!

Kitsis and Horowitz are getting ready to pitch the project to ABC Studios, where the two currently have an overall deal. If it gets a green light, Lindelof—who also has a deal at ABC—will serve as a consultant.

So what is this thing? Good question. The only additional intel I’ve been able to glean from my sources is that it will have a female lead. (Paging Sarah Michelle Gellar… )

Based on the pedigree alone, I’m going to declare it the breakout hit of the 2011-12 TV season.

Chef Robert Irvine is lost in Hawaii, on a mission to feed the cast and crew of the hit TV show, LOST. Just like the characters on the show, Robert is “stranded” on a deserted beach and must use all his creative powers to complete his mission.

“The concept of the candidates is really central to the final season of the show,” Cuse tells TVGuide.com. “Jacob is dead so that leaves a significant problem for the people on the island. Who is destined to be the person who is protecting this place?”

“One of the big questions of this show is: Why were these people brought to this island?” Lindelof adds. “At least now we have some sense — if Jacob is responsible for bringing them there — that it has something to do with the fact that he’s been observing them for quite some time. We now have information that he had this lighthouse, that he was able to see these people, look into their lives. For some reason, he chose them. We’ll find out what that reason is in the coming weeks.”

And how does that reason relate to the “sideways” world, the alternate universe in which Oceanic 815 landed safely in Los Angeles? We’ve seen some things have changed significantly there (um, Jack has a son), while for others, salient details remain the same (Locke is still in a wheelchair, even though he also appears to be on speaking terms with the man who we know to have put him there). So who’s David’s mother and how was Locke paralyzed in this universe? “These are all the right questions,” producer Edward Kitsis says. “Those questions that you’re picking up on are things that when we made those episodes, we very consciously wanted you to wonder about that,” adds producer Adam Horowitz.

While many fans have griped that the sideways story lines have been an unnecessary distraction this season, Lindelof emphasizes that they’re very important. “People are saying [they] don’t need these stories and all we can say is they’re absolutely 100 percent necessary to tell the story of Lost, and hopefully by the end of the season it will be more obvious as to why,” he said.

Here’s a question that might boggle your mind: If you die in one universe, what happens to your body in other universes? “Charlie and Boone died in the island, but they seem to be alive in the sideways,” said Lindelof. “What happens if you die in the sideways? That’s an interesting question.” Bottom line: Will there be a lot of death this season? “It depends on what your version of a lot is,” said Kitsis. “For my mother, one is too many.”

Carlton Cuse at Bumbershoot (09/07/09)

Kudos to Brooks from popdistillery.com for this report from yesterday’s LOST panel in Seattle:

Today at Seattle’s music and arts festival Bumbershoot, three writer/producers of Lost announced that when the show finishes its sixth and last season next year, not every skull-scratching, mind-blowing, jaw-gaping-mouth-breathing mystery will be answered.

This is a good thing.

As executive producer Carlton Cuse explained, sometimes not knowing the whole story is more interesting and more fulfilling than knowing, and he wisely offered Star Wars’ midi-chlorians as an example. What gives mysteries their power is, well, how mysterious they are, and taking that away can take away the fun. So not everything on Lost will be made clear, but Cuse (along with executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz) said that the creative team does have a road map of what they think must be explained. My question is, are the things I desperately need explained the things that the writers want to explain? I damn well hope so.

Other tidbits from the panel, some of which may be outright lies, include:

• Many faces from past seasons will appear in season six, including Charlie and possible Cindy (the flight attendant).

• While it normally takes the Lost writing team two weeks to plan an episode, “The Constant” took five. “Time travel is hard. It’s a lot of math!” —Kitsis.

• The boat sailed so well, its chase boat couldn’t keep up with it.

• Season six will have a fairly significant spiritual bent.

• The final shot of the show is already planned.

• While the producers have no personal plans for future incarnations of Lost, Cuse pointed out that it’s a powerful franchise and Disney would be foolish not to capitalize on that. So I think we can expect more Lost of some stripe in the future (or the past, because there’s often time travel involved.)

• Taking up that topic, Kitsis proclaimed that there really, really should be a Saturday morning cartoon show called Locke and the Monster in which Locke and the Smoke Monster teach kids lessons and build things. Coming this fall.

Bumbershoot (Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival) is hosting a LOST panel with three of the writers of the show tomorrow:

The TV show-turned-cultural phenomenon, LOST‘s immense popularity was immediate and steadfast. Known for their twisting plot lines, timelines and intricate character development, LOST executive producers Carlton Cuse, Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have helped change the boundaries of television. This program will include dialogue amongst the writers and an audience Q & A, hosted by Jeff Jensen senior writer for Entertainment Weekly.
