2. Registration

Click here to register in Second Life. This process will take you only a few minutes. You must  be 18 years old to join as well as go through the age verification process through Linden Labs. If you already have an account but need to download the software, click here. (Remember, the registration is completely free, there is no cost to visit the LOST Island.)

3. Go to the Island

When you log in Second Life, you will appear at a Second Life orientation area, it can be a bit confusing but we recommend you go through it.  Remember that though they are avatars in Second Life there are real people controlling them so please always be respectful.  Once you have completed the orientation you will be teleported to an infohub.  To enter the LOST 3D Island you MUST be an SL-LOST member, in order to be added to the group you can IM Samantha Kuncoro, Felicity Burt, Seastories Supermarine or Teejay Dojoji.  Upon recieving your request they will send you an invite, as well as a copy of Jacob’s Laws and a landmark to get to the island.  If you do not recieve a landmark however, click on the image below or simply type “Lost island” on SL’s “Search” -> “Places”.    Please be aware that due to a change in land policies in Second Life the Island now has a limit of 20 avatars allowed at a time, if you try to teleport to the island and receive a message that the region is full please try again later.  The limit Second Life has set is beyond our control.  For more information about the events taking place on the island visit http://virtuallostisland.blogspot.com/

4. Tips & FAQ

  • How can I IM someone or add to my friends’ list? Right click on the avatar you would like to make friends with and choose “Add Friend”.If the avatar isn’t near you, but you know their username, then you can Offer Friendship to them, which they can then accept (or decline) when they next log in. Choose Communicatefrom the Bottom Menu. And choose “Add…”. Type in the Second Life name of the person you would like to be friends with and choose “Select” and “Ok”.You can also choose Searchfrom the Bottom Menu and under “People” tab type in the Second Life name of the person you would like to be friends with in the “Find” search box and choose “Search” and “Add Friend…”.You can also use this method to simply contact a fellow Lostie.
  • I only want to use SL for the LOST island. How can I set the Island as the default place in Second Life? You need to be part of the group to be able to set the Island as your default “home”. Once you have contacted the Staff, go to the Island, click on World (top menu) -> Set Home to Here. The LOST Island should now be your home. So if you decide to leave the Island you can always Teleport home! To teleport to home (once it is set), click on World -> Teleport Home. Or on a PC keyboard choose CTRL + SHIFT + H and you will be teleported home. If you are not still a member of the group you can create a landmark: from the top menu click on World -> Create Landmark Here. This landmark is now stored in your “Inventory”. Creating a landmark can be really useful in the Sydney Airport, since the Season 5 episode discussions will be holded there.
  • How can I know if one person is a member of the Staff? All the Staff members on the Island will wear a tag “sl-LOST Staff” above their heads. Feel free to ask them any question!
  • How can I move the camera around the Island? From the top menu, click on View -> Camera Controls. A camera controls mini toolbar opens at the bottom of your screen. Use this to zoom out, zoom in, move camera up, down, right and left. It takes a little getting used to.If you have a rollerball mouse (and a PC), you can use the shortcut: on your keyboard hold CTRL+ ALT and left click on the land. While holding CTRL + ALT and left click on the mouse, move the mouse to move around the camera view, zoom out and in (using the roller ball on the mouse) and so forth. Holding CTRL + ALT + SHIFT and left click on the mouse, move mouse up and down to pan.Holding down just the ALT key you can also use the left and right arrow buttons to move the camera around your avatar and again holding ALT key use the up and down arrow to zoom in and out for a nice close up photo! Alternatively, holding down just the ALT key and left clicking the mouse, you can then move the mouse left, right, in and out to move the camera around your avatar or to zoom in and out. Again this does take some getting used to.
  • Where can I change the graphics preferences? Go to Edit (top menu) -> Preferences -> Graphics.
  • How do I change the lightening, the way the sky looks like, etc? To change all that go to World (top menu) -> Environment Settings -> Environment Editor -> Advanced Sky. There are a few Sky Presets that we really like: “A-6AM” , “Coastal Sunset” , “Foggy” , “Midday 3″ and “Incongruent Truths”. You can also create custom sky presets if you want.
