THR: How does Alcatraz differ from Lost?
Garcia: I believe I’m going to be a lot less sweaty! There are no planes crashing and it’s not in the jungle! [Laughs.] I play a historian/comic book guy/Alcatraz expert. You don’t want people to hunt to try and find what the next Lost is anymore. Let Lost be Lost and now find what Alcatraz is. Don’t chase Lost; love it and put it to bed. You can bring out the DVDs whenever you want but don’t go to Alcatraz looking for Lost. There may be some elements that will remind you since it comes from the same family but it’s going to be it’s own thing.

Bad news for Paramount Pictures: Despite previous reports, Vulture hears that that neither Matthew Fox nor Ed Harris will be starring in the studio’s zombie-pocalypse thriller, World War Z. Fox has a scheduling conflict stemming from his prior commitment to star in I, Alex Cross with Tyler Perry at Summit Entertainment; less clear is why the Harris deal didn’t make. (Last week, word came that the four-time Oscar nominee would star in Beth Henley’s Pulitzer-winning play The Jacksonian, but that doesn’t start performances until next February at L.A.’s Geffen Playhouse.) The actors had smaller roles in the Brad Pitt flick, but with the movie already in production in Malta, the filmmakers are scrambling to recast, having actors read in both London and Los Angeles.

Jack Bender is continuing his long-standing relationship with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, signing on to Fox’s upcoming mystery drama Alcatraz.

From executive producer Abrams and writer/exec producer Liz Sarnoff, Alcatraz revolves around the famed San Francisco prison and the police team investigating the mysterious reappearance of its 1960s inhabitants in the present.

Bender, repped by UTA, will executive produce and direct episodes of the series, from Warner Bros. Television, Bad Robot and Bonanza Productions.

Bender’s credits also include Abrams’ Lost, Alias and Felicity. This past pilot season, he directed Fox’s Weekends at Bellevue, the Lauren Ambrose starrer that did not get picked up at Fox.

Alcatraz exec producers also include Abrams, Sarnoff, Bryan Burk (Lost). Co-executive producers are Steve Lilien (Kyle XY) and Bryan Wynbrandt (Kyle XY), who both penned the pilot with Sarnoff.

Sarah Jones (Sons of Anarchy) stars as Rebecca Madsen, a detective who discovers a brutal murder was committed by a former Alcatraz prisoner who died decades ago. Sam Neill (Jurassic Park) as government agent Emerson Hauser and former Lost star Jorge Garcia plays Dr. Diego Soto, an Alcatraz expert and comic book fan who helps Madsen with her case. Parminder Nagra (ER) co-stars as Lucy Banerjee, a technician who works with Hauser.

Alcatraz will premiere midseason on Fox.

At this year’s Bonnaroo Music Festival, one of the things that I heard was very cool was right before Arcade Fire performed, people said it was raining blue light from the sky.  When I heard about it, I figured most of my friends were wasted and it was a plane overheard that was blinking a blue light. However, the other day I received a package and it had a flash drive and a few other things.  The items had a link to testsubjectsneeded.com and one of them had “Mission Icefly” written on the side of it.
When I put the flash drive in my computer, I noticed it had a video.  It starts with a sign for Bonnaroo and then it shows people reacting to what I’d heard about.  As the video ends, it has a link to missionicefly.com.  However, shortly after the link, the video goes black and then after a few seconds, a very short message appears.  While I can’t make out what is said, I did notice the person talking is Terry O’Quinn (Lost).

Terry O’Quinn is going baaaack to the island.

In what marks the most high-profile Lost reunion since the ABC phenom signed off last year, O’Quinn is joining the cast of CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 in a pivotal recurring role.

The gig not only brings the Emmy winner back to the Aloha State, but it reunites him with Lost castmate and Five-0 regular Daniel Dae Kim.

O’Quinn will play a Navy Seal Lt. Commander who trained Alex O’Loughlin’s McGarrett in Coronado, and served with his father in Vietnam. Described as strong, stubborn and a man you want in your corner when things go south, the character holds some of the answers to the mysteries surrounding the respective murders of McGarrett’s mother and father.

O’Quinn recently shot a starring role in the Marc Cherry-produced ABC pilot Hallelujah, but the drama failed to land a spot on the network’s fall schedule.

Lost’s Rebecca Mader has been found.

The 34-year-old actress will guest-star in the upcoming second season of Covert Affairs, TVLine.com reports. She will play a German flight attendant who helps Auggie (Christopher Gorham) on a mission while en route to Istanbul.

Mader recently appeared on ABC’s No Ordinary Family and will star in the network’s new comedy Work It, about two unemployed car salesmen (Amaury Nolasco and Ben Koldyke) who decide that in order to succeed, they must dress as women to get jobs as pharmaceutical reps.

Covert Affairs returns for Season 2 on Tuesday, June 7.

EXCLUSIVE: Matthew Fox and Ed Harris are in talks to join Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos and James Badge Dale in the Marc Forster-directed World War Z for Paramount and Skydance Productions. Forster has also set Julia Levy-Boeken, the French actress who stars in the Israeli series alufa Ha. The film is an adaptation of the Max Brooks novel that looks back on a global zombie infestation 10 years after the fact. Fox, who just wrapped a West End stage turn in the Neil LaBute play In a Forest Dark and Deep, is separately slated to play a vicious serial killer opposite Tyler Perry in the Rob Cohen-directed I, Alex Cross for Summit Entertainment, with production starting in August. Harris just starred in the Asger Leth-directed Man on a Ledge for Summit. Fox is repped by WME and Management 360, Harris by CAA and Levy-Boeken by Weiner Management.

WWZ begins production this month after a long period in which Paramount struggled with the $125 million budget until Skydance’s David Ellison stepped into the breach along with another unnamed financier to take some of the burden off the studio. With the expectation that JJ Abrams won’t be able to pull together a Star Trek sequel for summer 2012, WWZ looms as an option for Paramount, as does its sequel to G.I. Joe.

EXCLUSIVE: In its latest attempt to hatch a large-scale film that can play to a family audience, Disney has made a seven-figure deal with screenwriter and Lost exec producer Damon Lindelof to write and produce an original large-scale science fiction feature film. Other than the fact that the project has a working title of 1952, I couldn’t pry plot details out of anybody. I’m not sure if the title connotes a period the film is set in, or if it is a Lost reference. I’ve also heard that this project isn’t just being conceived for movies only, but that it has multiple platform aspirations.

The project came out of a series of meetings that Lindelof had with Disney’s production president Sean Bailey and senior exec Brigham Taylor, and it’s the first film that Lindelof is producing from the ground up. Since ending the run of Lost and serving as one of the show’s architects all the way through, Lindelof has been on fire as a screenwriter. He teamed with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to script the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys & Aliens. Lindelof came aboard to rewrite Ridley Scott’s 3D Alien prequel and injected enough new ideas into the Prometheus script that for Fox and Scott to deemhe film an original. Lindelof is right now working with Kurtzman and Orci to pull together a Star Trek sequel that can be ready to begin production later this year or early next. I’ve reported my skepticism that Abrams would ever be able to move from launching Super 8 and jump into a Star Trek sequel that will make its summer 2012 release date, because the scribes need Abrams to give a thumbs up to the 70-page story outline they’ve written, and turn that into a script. Lindelof will be engaged in that for awhile, and he will start the Disney project after that. Lindelof’s deal was made by CAA.

Lost‘s Jacob is coming to the aid of The Closer. Actor Mark Pellegrino, who also played Supernatural‘s Lucifer, will recur on the TNT series beginning in mid-August.

Pellegrino will play Brenda’s high-powered defense attorney Gavin Baker, described by executive producer James Duff as “brisk, gay and formidable. He is ruthless in court and still manages to project an air of friendly professionalism.”

Mark’s character specializes in defending police officers in civil actions. Brenda will require his help after she is sued by the family of a gang member she placed in harm’s way. “Though he is easy to like, Gavin is extremely dangerous to underestimate,” Duff adds. “He is the only person on earth who can make Brenda hang up her cell phone.”

Alcatraz

Once Upon A Time

She’s a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who’s been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter. According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Of course Emma doesn’t believe a word, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she finds herself drawn to this unusual boy and his strange New England town. Concerned for Henry, she decides to stay for a while, but she soon suspects that Storybrooke is more than it seems. It’s a place where magic has been forgotten, but is still powerfully close… where fairytale characters are alive, even though they don’t remember who they once were. The epic battle for the future of all worlds is beginning, but for good to win, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell.

Person of Interest

Official Synopsis: PERSON OF INTEREST stars Jim Caviezel, Emmy Award winner Michael Emerson and Academy Award nominee Taraji P. Henson in a crime thriller about a presumed dead former-CIA agent who teams up with a mysterious billionaire to prevent violent crimes by using their own brand of vigilante justice. Reese’s (Caviezel) special training in covert operations appeals to Finch (Emerson), a software genius who invented a program that uses pattern recognition to identify people about to be involved in violent crimes. Using state-of-the-art surveillance technology, the two work outside of the law using Reese’s adept skills and Finch’s unlimited wealth to unravel the mystery of the person of interest and stop the crime before it happens. Reese’s actions catch the attention of the NYPD, including homicide detective Carter (Henson), and Fusco (Kevin Chapman), a cop who Reese uses to his advantage. With infinite crimes to investigate, Reese and Finch find that the right person, with the right information, at the right time, can change everything. Emmy Award winners J.J. Real Steel

Official Synopsis: A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near future [the year 2020], where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring.  Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.  When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Goyo) to build and train a championship contender.  As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Premiere Date: Real Steel arrives in theaters in the US on November 18th.

Ringer

Wealthy, pampered and married to the strikingly handsome Andrew Martin, Siobhan lives what appears to be a fairy tale life – a life where no one knows that Bridget exists. The sisters seem to be mending their frayed relationship, until Siobhan disappears overboard during a boat trip, and Bridget makes the split decision to take on her sister’s identity. She discovers shocking secrets, not only about her sister and her marriage, but also about Siobhan’s best friend, Gemma, and Gemma’s husband, Henry. Scandal

After leaving the White House, the power consultant opened her own firm, hoping to start a new chapter—both professionally and personally—but she can’t seem to completely cut ties with her past. Slowly it becomes apparent that her staff, who specialize in fixing the lives of other people, can’t quite fix the ones closest at hand—their own.

Bonus: ‘Awake’

LOST link: Dylan Minnette (Jack’s imaginary son on LOST) plays the alive-in-one-reality-but-dead-in-the-other son of the protagonist.

Official Synopsis: Lots of people find themselves leading some kind of double life… but none quite like this.

After Detective Michael Britten wakes up from a car accident with his wife and teenage son, he learns the devastating news that his wife died in the crash. Trying to put the pieces of his life back together, he wakes up a few days later to realize that his wife is very much alive and his son died in the accident! Did he lose his wife or his son? Or neither of them??

What if your life split in two in the face of a situation like this, and you could actually have everything you wanted, just not all at the same time? Michael goes back to work solving crimes while trying to put things back on a “normal” track, but alternating between realities provides some challenges – one moment he and his wife are grappling with having another child to replace their loss, and the next moment he’s finding himself attracted to his son’s tennis coach to fill the void from the loss of his wife. At the same time, he is solving crimes in each world which sometimes overlap in fascinating and inexplicable ways. Is he dreaming or going mad? Michael begins seeing two different therapists to help him sort things out, but then again why would he want either “reality” to go away when the totality of both means having his family complete?

From groundbreaking writer Kyle Killen (Lone Star) and starring Jason Isaacs (Brotherhood, Harry Potter) comes a drama about the power of the mind, where the inception of life is a mystery and reality might just be overrated.
