Well, I'm one hater of the finale and I can't believe that so many fans actually just parrot Darlton with “it's all about charatcer”. That is their excuse to not having answered anything they primarily had used to make the show interesting but they actually had absolutely no plan. I'm disappointed because I trusted them to have a major plan for where everything is heading. I thought they schedules the 6 seasons when they knew it would end. How many times did they say they knew the end of LOST? What they probably meant is they knew it wpuld end with Jack closing his eyes. The disappointment is that everything they showed us was NOT a preparation for a glorious finale that would prove they had it planned. After the finale it was really clear: They crafted every Season without context to next seasons. Even the big cliffhangers (John Lock died, Jacob was stabbed, The hydrogen bomb exploded) were simply crafted in order to make LOST look interesting, but they actually didn't know anything. Really a pity…

Season 1 finale = The Hatch and the Others kidnapping Walt/kids were main storylines in Season 2.
Season 2 finale = Penny finds the island. Widmore sends the freighter and Penny rescues Desmond and the Oceanic Six in Season 3 and Season 4.
Season 3 finale = Jack and Kate are off the island. It introduces the flashforwards. This was the main storyline in Season 4.
So I understand that you are not satisfied by the finale or the lack of answers (which I disagree, but that's another story). But I don't think they “crafter every season without the context to next seasons” and I don't think cliffhangers were just cliffhangers.

If it were all about the characters, why introduce new ones?
Fundamentally, the people in the flash sideways were not the characters we fell in love with. Imagine if season 1 started the same way as the flash sideways story did. We wouldn't give a damn about these characters. We saw the extreme length each character arc had to go through to get where they were by season 5. And to believe that they can do it again in a shorter span in the flash sideways (without the island)? Garbage. An emotional incident will enlighten you of your other life. It's an intellectual shark that's jumping.
The ending and the last season was flawed because the full attachment disappeared. Take Desmond for example. We hardly saw him in Season 5, so we were use to not seeing him, and when he finally gets his own episode in season 6, it's basically just a repeat of The Constant. Meeting Penny.
Blame it on the long hiatus, the introduction of pointless characters (Illana), or the pointless motivation tactics for each character (Hurley deciding for the group to stupidly see Flocke), the intellectual closure wasn't there. Albeit, the reunions were great. A great throwback to a season when the writing was pulling on my heart strings.

If it wasn't all about the characters than why have nearly every episode centric on a particular character? Why have so many main characters? Why have flashbacks explaining their back stories? Why have flash forwards? What is significant about Charlie's drug addiction to the mythology? The question should be rephrased what is significant about the mythology to characters, such as Charlie's addiction to drugs? Jacob chose flawed people and the island simultaneously tested them, would they let go of their past, move on and use the island to heal themselves both emotionally and physically? Would they chose good over evil? This journey has been all about exploring this wide range of fascinating people, the island was the setting and it allowed for awesome stories and plot lines. It's the reason why so many people hated Across the Sea, it didn't feature characters that we've followed for six seasons. It was all mythology.
Face it people, this was ALWAYS about the characters. If you've ever payed attention to the origins of the show, the casting and writing of characters was what Damon and JJ gave the most amount of attention too. When they had an actor they liked, they made the character, the island and the mythology was something introduced to make the show more intriguing and mysterious. This doesn't mean the show was ONLY about the characters, but predominantly, the island was but one character in a larger mosaic.

Jack's father's coffin going missing, represents his inability to let his father go and that void in his life where he couldn't bury it and move on. Sawyer lived a life where he helped people not coned them. Faraday lived a world where his plan worked, and his mother let him be a musician instead of a physicist who she would utlimately kill. Kate lived a life where she was a fugitive but was innocent, where she helped Claire give birth and didn't take her baby and feel that guilt. Hurley wasn't unlucky and therefore responsible for the plane crash or people's deaths etc. Some of them could not get over their baggage, Sayid still killed, and despite letting Nadia go, put her in danger nonetheless. Charlie was still a drug addict. Ben envisioned a world where he not only didn't take Alex from Rousseau but helped her, instead of letting her die. The sideways universe represents the wish to wipe the slate clean, to start over, to change the past and the future. Ultimately whats done is done, there was no cop-out where everything was changed, even in death they had to face their past lives, their flaws and it took all of them working together (not dying alone) to move on and let go. This was all built on all the major themes of six seasons. This takes brilliant thought and writing I only wish I could do, and I pity that you can't find the beauty in it all. This is true for Aaron, Walt, for John Locke's death, for everyone saying: If they don't go back to the island GOD HELP US ALL, for the fact that some Losties were sent to the seventies and some not, for Desmond who was said the rules don't apply to him, for Christian being seen by Jack in L.A. (which means this can't have been Smoky). These were all core questions! From my experience of some great and puzzling books, I kept waiting for the producers coming back to specifics they prepared a long time ago. If you're familiar with English soap operas (like East Enders) there major story plots are sometimes prepared one or two years in advance, where a whole chain of events leads to an ongoing progression of suspense, and in the end the audience realized that the writers meticulously prepared every single step and at the finale of such a story arc the audience realizes everything before was planned and all the details were highly important. This is what I expected LOST to do. I thought their cool idea was to combine 2 or 3 of the most important mythology bits and come up with a mind-boggling answer to it. Even more did I hope for a unique finale knowing they had the knowledge of their show ending, they knew at Season 3 that they only had 3 more seasons to do. Even more did I hope seasons 4-6 would all lead to ONE major showdown which would have been prepared from Season 4 onwards. However, showing that they died and not even saying how and making the island a bath-tub with actually has a plug was one of the most ridiculous ideas I had ever seen in LOST… They could realy have jumped to this ending back at Season 1. I really don't see the point of making this series 6 seasons long thinking of THAT finale…

0y obkective to follow the show was clearly that I admired the great and cool plot twists, I loved the thrilling moments when they came up with a cool moment. However, during all of LOST I wrongly thought the writers would lead everything we say to a grand finale. I thought some of the core mystery elements (not why pregnant women lost their babies or polar bear stuff!!) would lead to a summary of answers in the finale. What I realsed now in the hindsight was they wree really clever in producing LOST. All they ever did was come up with great myteries and puzzling moments. And as soon as the audience continued whatching there has always been a new focus and a new mystery, putting the former mysterious elemnt in the background. This is true for Aaron, for Walt, for John Locke's death, for repeatedly saying “God Help us all” if they don't go back, showing Eloise Hawkings who knew so much about time an space, and even Jacob, Illana, Dogen and Jacob's false mother, which they introduced but murdered in fear of having to actually give answers that prove the audience they had it planned beforehand…
I think it's a bit srange to say that it was all about character. I know everyone seems to parrot that. Howver, LOST didn't start as soap opera. It was from the very beginning this totally crazy, almost weird Mystery-Drama series. It was from the pilot onwards about strange things, unusual elements on an even more unusual island. So it's only normal for people to want answers to some of the real core questions. I didn't start watching LOST because I liked Sayer's hair or Kate's appearence. 5 watched it because I was drawn into a mysterious world I wanted to understand. What I expected in the finale was simply an answer to what this was all about. And not their giving us an answer that some fans had already back at season 1 (it's purgatory). And well, to say the island is not purgatory but the world they created on the island, where they get to after their death is just ridiculous. I actually expected something far, far, far, far more spectacular…

It's up to everyone on his own to experience it. Locke was into it from the beginning, Jack it took almost 6 seasons, but he finally found it. I can't help you with this, I just hope you'll find it too and if not,
