Hey guys, That was the greatest finale ever and for everyone who is confused i hope this helps. At the beginning of this season, Darlton said that what we call the “alternate” reality wasn’t an “alternate” anything, that it was very real. At some point, everyone on the island and off the island died and instead of moving they decided to wait for each other, to “move on” together. The thing is, it doesn’t matter how they died, all that matters is that in the end, they will be together. That was what Desmond was trying to say in the end when he told Jack on the island that none of this matters because he knew that in the end, everyone would be together. Another great clue was Hurley telling ben he was a good number 2 and Ben replying that he was a great number 1. Obviously they lived together on the island for a while after Hurley took over as the new Jacob. Then when Kate told Jack that she missed him so much. There is no way of knowing but it could be possible that when Kate and everyone got off the island, she live a long life with claire and took care of Aaron and for however many years she lived, she spent it missing Jack. J.J. Abrams said it best in an article i read a while back, in the end, lost isn’t about the island, it is about the characters. It makes so much sense now, the island existed but it was just a story telling device, it didn’t really matter, what matter was that we saw these characters and learn to love them and this finale gave us an ending where we know that in the end, they all found each other again and “moved on” together. What everyone thought was an “Alternate Reality” wasn’t that at all, it was a world where your soul could wait for your love ones and your friends, so you all could be together again. and yet we didn't even know about “the light” until two episodes ago. i thought that whole storyline, the light as the reason they were all there, was a cliched and obvious reason, for a show that for 5 seasons was all about doing things not cliched and obvious.
it's a cool idea that these characters constructed a “pre-afterlife” where they could meet up again but what's the point. why couldn't they just have moved on normally. and i don't think the sideways characters did everything right they were still crazy flawed.

My thoughts…what we have seen on the island since the show began was all real. everything that happened, happened. all the pain, all the death, all the mystery and magic was real. when they detonated the bomb in season 5 that was real too and it didnt reset time like they were hoping, but i think it opened a window into this flashsideways world that acted as purgutory for them. this season opened with them on oceanic 815 in the flashsideways world because that was the moment they first all began their journey together and built this pertugatory as a waiting room for them until the last person died so that they could move on just we saw. on a character level this episode was fulfilling because it completed their arc, but in terms of all the mystery and mythology i feel kinda short changed. i expected to be left in the dark for most of the mysteries becuase Darlton have always sold this show as a character show, but still it would have been nice to satisfy those who tuned into the show because of its mystery. all in all though i am happy i have spent the last six years on this journey, ive never seen a show change the way we look at tv, ourselves, storytelling, and destinty like this show did. this story was worth telling and im happy i was there for the ride.

I still have a lot of questions, and I'm a bit confused, but I loved it. I don't think that anything has ever made me cry like LOST has. This show had a lot of heart, and the ending was just absolutely beautiful. It's been a tremendous journey.

That was beautiful…left me speechless. Matthew Fox was fantastic in this episode. It has been over for 2 hours and I can't go to sleep! I feel silly, but I almost started crying when Matthew Fox walked out on Jimmy K's special and he looked like he had been crying having just watched the finale himself. I just can't believe it is really over…OK, I officially need to get a life!

The island was real life. The flash sideways was a sort of purgatory, a holding of somekind so that the souls whom lived and dealt with the island could “let go”. Like Christian said, “everyone dies”. Everyone in the sideways world, had already lived there life. They came to the island, some died, like Sun and Jin, and others died way beyond that. Hurley and Ben and kate are the ones whom died after Jack. They all met in this holding and let go, which gave them heaven. Ben showed a great deal of honor by not going into that church. He knew he had done so much bad, and that he didn't deserve it. Michael couldn't because he's still stuck on the island. In the in between.
The best part was Locke saying he had nothing, and that was his time to move on. It was awesome. The ending was very fitting. They lived, and died. Some deaths we got to see, and others we didn't, but all in all it was a fantastic ending, and was well deserved. If you can't seem to get the episode then a big sorry for you. I understand it full and well. Best show ever.

Sad to see it end! I completely agree with what the majority of people are saying here, with the sort of purgatory and all, so I'm not going to add anymore to it since it'll just be a really long post about how great the finale was. Honestly, I loved it and am really sad to see it end!
Also, one thing no one has mentioned was the intense fight scene between Locke and Jack! I mean them charging at each other in the rain. Locke with his knife and the Jack busts out the Superman Punch!!!! That was really cool….such a great show….I hope things get better tomorrow

First time a “Huge Mega Finale” actually delivered in my lifetime. (LA Law, St Elsewhere, Cheers, Seinfeld, Sopranos). It left me satisfied, happy and wanting to re-watch.

I absolutely loved it and thought it was a perfect ending (for me).
The way I (along with my friends, whom will always be my castaways) have interpreted it is that the “sideways” was and is essentially purgatory. I use the term purgatory loosely because of the stigma that is associated with the term, especially with this show. (People have speculated that “the Island is just purgatory and they're all dead!”) All of these people went to purgatory when they died and they could not “move on” until they had found everyone that had been most important to them in their life. This would enable them to move on together.
Associating a time frame or any sense of time is foolish because when dealing with something as figurative as purgatory, placing something real into the equation would only deviate from its intended meaning. Jack's conversation with his father is the best explanation and the only explanation that I needed. “Everyone dies,” Christian says. These people didn't all die at the age that we last saw them at. Keep in mind that this place is figurative and therefore, we just see a representation of what dying is.
Closing thoughts: This is the biggest cliche for the moment, but I feel lost. I need a compass like Desmond needed his “constant.” This is, without a doubt, my favorite episode of any show!

LOST has ended. It has been amazing experience, one that I feel truly blessed to be a part of. It has been so much more than just a TV show, it has been a journey. One that I can say wholeheartedly without a doubt was worth it. When the episode ended I was confused. I felt so many emotions at once that I felt emotionless. I was unsure, in a state of confusion. Not confused what happened on screen, but at my response to it. Now that a few hours have passed and it has begun to sink in I must say it was brilliant. A pitch perfect ending to what was the most well done, risk taking series I've ever seen.
I should began by explaining my title, a play off of the famous line Jack spoke early on in the first season. The actual quote is “live together, die alone” although in light of the finale it turns out that the turth is we live alone, but die together. The flash-sideways actually being an “after-flash” is a twist I didn't expect. I would not have imagined purgatory to actually be the answer. Though in reviewing everything about the formerly titled “sideways” world it makes sense. Each character had exactly what they thought they wanted in life. It was an agglomeration of everything “perfect”, and yet something was still missing. In the attempt to build a “perfect” life each character lost the thing they cared for most.
In an ideal world Sawyer would use his con skills to be on the right side of the law, Charlie would be a well-known rockstar, Desmond would have the approval of Widmore, Hurley would have good luck Dogen would be with his son, Jack would have a son, Ben would have the admiration of Alex, Roussea would have Alex, Kate wouldn't have actually committed the crime of killing her father, Claire would have made it to LA to meet the parents who were planning on adopting Aaron, Penny would be the child separated from Widmore, and Faraday would be the musician he always wanted to rather than the scientist his mother forced him to.
The after-flash is quite clearly a world created by the castaways themselves as Christian tells Jack. It explains directly why we didn't see certain characters such as Richard, who in his world would be away with Isabella rather than with our LOSTies. At first this whole idea felt as a cheat, a waste having spent half the season there for it just be a world where everyone died. But upon reflection it is very well done, that I actually don't feel cheated as I found the after-flash to actually be the most interesting part of the season. I found myself over time much more interested in how things were connecting there rather than the good vs evil fight that was stirring up on the island.
And that is where the finale does it's best work. The island is pushed to secondary, the way it should be. Yes we see more of the inner workings of the island with the literal cork that kept the island together (I simply thought Jacob was just being metaphorical in “Ab Aterno”). Yes people will be pissed we don't more about the island, as the finale did very little actually answer questions about it. But it's something I'm ok with. I would have loved to get more on the time travel aspect of the island, as I find that the one confusing part in the series. Time travel appeared to be something that was at the heart of the series when season five occurred, yet now that everything is over it was merely a one shot storyline that didn't account for all that much in the long run. But I never felt the need to learn what the island is, and it's annoying to me the people that want to know that. No answer is going to be satisfying because there really is no answer. What is the island? It's an island that has special electromagnetic powers that make it an outlier in this world. That's the only explanation that could be given without disappointing. The island is an island and to me that is fine.
Though I will admit more explanation on Smokey and Jacob would have been nice as in the end we really know little to understand them. We get them as characters, but considering one is a being of smoke and the other has the ability to make people live forever I would have enjoyed a somewhat explanation. The way the passing of Jacob's power has been presented has to me come off as nothing but a fake ritual. When Jack gives Hurley the water to drink and says “now you're like me”, it plays as if it's merely for show. The same feeling came off when Jacob passed it on to Jack, as if they are both just repeating the ritual they saw the previous guardian due to them. It appears as if there are no real powers being passed, yet we know that Jacob does indeed have powers. I wonder if Hurley really was given the powers in the ritual or not as Jack didn't give the water a blessing as Jacob did.
I was a little disappointed to see the lack of Smokey in the episode overall, in fact we didn't see him in smoke monster form once. He was only seen in Locke's body. I found his death to be a little anti-climatic in that he'd been set up as this great villian all season long and a monster throughout the whole series yet he went down pretty easy. Yes he was in a “human” (not sure if that's the right term) state when he died, but still I expected more from him. He didn't do much other than get Desmond go down into the heart of the island and remove the white stone cork, but that wasn't much of a feat as Jack participated in that just as much. The biggest unanswered and fairly important mythology question in the finale was why exactly was Man In Black turned into a Smoke Monster when he went into the heart of the island, yet Desmond and Jack both didn't? Was it simply because MIB was “different”, being more of an evil nature; yet in “Across The Sea” it showed he wasn't really all that evil to begin with. But in the end I'll just accept it and try to purge that question out of my head as the finale revealed for once and for all LOST is not a show about mythology or really even good verus evil as this season set up so much, but instead it is about love and relationships.
The series has always been built around it's characters and their connections with each other, and the finale really hit that home. It's characters were front and center, especially Jack Shephard who with the finale has been solidified as the most crucial character in LOST. LOST is the story of many heroes and their journey to redemption, but none more so than Jack Shephard. Throughout his life Jack always tried to fix things yet it never seemed to work. He fixed his future wife's legs, but he couldn't fix their marriage soon after. He brought Charlie back from a near death experience, but he couldn't save him eventually. He tried to save the castaways misery with the Jughead bomb, but it failed turning out to be a dud as we know officially know and killed Juliet and many others in the process (*). But in the end Jack was able to fix things. He saved the island from destruction and through that saved the world if Jacob and other's words are to be true. Right before Jack died he was able to finally fix things, which is apart of why the finale worked so much. Everything about Jack was poetic. His story arch is among the best in not only television but in modern fiction. He began arrogant and determined to save everyone out of his own selfish need, became addicted to pills and obsessed with returning to the island realizing his life had no meaning, got back and became passive refusing to partake in crucial events such as saving little Ben's life, took action in blowing up Jughead in an attempt to end his depressions, became a willing follower after it's failure afraid to be in charge again, all until he realizes his true destiny in life to follow in Jacob's footsteps, to be a leader not out of arrogance but because it was his destiny. He started as a man of science, but he died a man of faith.
And what a perfect death that was. A beautiful and well crafted last few minutes as the series came to a close. Jack dying, staggering across the bamboo forrest as in the after-flash he greets all his former friends, ready to pass on to the next life, only now ready to move on and let go. Vincent appearing next to him in the forrest and it was clear the last shot was indeed something planned from the very beginning. Jack falls down, in the same spot the series began. He lies there, seeing the Ajira flight take off above finally rescuing his friends like he promised long ago. Jack closes his eye, in perfect parallel to the show's opening shot. And then cut to black with the LOST title card, and with that television's greatest epic ends.
*I'm gonna go ahead and say that Jughead not blowing the island up is proof that in LOST time travel you can't change things; what's done is done. This means that the Jughead explosion was actually involved in creating the incident itself meaning Jack and such were the ones to help cause the event that would lead to their crash. Thank you LOST for using the proper timeline theory. Though we may not have learned how or why time travel occurred, at least we finally know which time travel theory the show runs on.

When you're a hardcore fan you're obviously willing to enjoy almost anything, but when you're a bit more objective you're able to open your eyes and realize the huge disappointing nature of this sixth season, the finale in particular

I think the island was a metaphor or symbol of the life or lives of this caracters in LOST and how through life you interact with other people and the impact those interactions might have. In life we go through many things good and bad, trials, tribulations and adventures that eventually ends up in death. The sideline timeline was a way of this characters to cope and hold on to life, before the final decision of moving forward…only God knows how this characters died whether was the crash, murder, the bomb or even a disease or accident.

If the sideways were the purgatory (or a (non-)religious thing close to that, or even a Jack's mind construction) then why did Desmond have so much importance? Why was he in charge of revealing the “truth” to everybody?! He's far from being the most important person to Jack…
And one more question: what about David? In the original timeline Jack doesn't have a child, as stated by Locke. So where does it come from? Does he even exist?

Lost was one of the most inspiring show ever. They had all the elements to make it the best story ever told on television. But they finally chose this afterlife-religious ending, leaving science and so many characters on the side of the road.

Very anti~climatic with the killing of the smoke monster. I wish Kate and Sawyer would have gotten some closure like “hey we know we have this great connection we'll always share this bond but we're not meant to be together” or something. I bet they are wishing they never started the stupid love triangle. Especially when Kate and Sawyer had soo much chemistry and Kate and Jack (until the final episode) had none.

Even more emotional than I thought. The fact that the flash sideways was a pre-afterlife phase was great and the acting was impeccable. The final scene of the show being the exact opposite to the pilot was beautiful.
The most anticipated finale and they succeeded almost everyones expectations. How the heck did they do that?

“Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending.” For me, no other quote can describe what we just witnessed. After watching The End, I fully understand what the writers meant when they claimed that LOST is about its characters. As Jacob knew, they were all flawed, searching for something that they could never find. That is, until they found the Island. As Christian said to Jack, “the most important time in your life was the time you spent with these people.” The same is true for all of them. On the Island, they all found friendship, renewed faith, redemption, and most importantly, love.
The scene between Jack and Christian was beautiful. As many people have already stated, I too believe that the flash-sideways (if we can even call it that anymore) is a purgatory of sorts. Although it may seem Christian because of the church setting, the writers never claimed this to be specific to any religion. The stained glass window behind Christian is proof of that.
The point is, “everyone dies, kiddo. Some before you, some long after you.” These people that we have grown to love found redeption on the Island, in each other. And they needed to move on, together.

At first I almost hated it. I knew the end was going to be the eye but it was only 7:15 (It was supposed to end at 7:30 I suppose Sky1 played less ads than the US) so I was expecting something else to happen and then “LOST”. I was like WTH! I still don't understand whats happened but I've figured it out I think. There are still so many unanswered questions and not just littles ones like Darton said would never be answered.

admittedly, i had trouble sleeping last night. i was kept awake thinking about losing these friends i have spent the last six years getting to know and learning to care very deeply for. maybe its silly cause its just a tv show, but that was the greatness of LOST, it changed the way I looked at storytelling. I kept playing the scene over and over again in my head of Jack struggling his way through the bamboo forest, falling to the ground, and being greeted by Vincent as he lay there in peace with the fact that he had died saving his friends, the people he had come to love. And I think this will stand as the greatness of the Finale, and ultimately the greatness of LOST.
There are questions that remain unanswered, mysteries that are still tangled in the fabric of this mysterious island, but the more I think about LOST and the more I time I spent leading up to this finale, I found myself asking questions not about whether the mysteries of the island would be resolved, but what would happen to these castaways, my friends. I was worried about who would live and who would die, who would find rescue, and who would stay behind as guardian of the island. The mysteries didnt seem to matter anymore because these characters define what LOST is all truly about.
As I watched Jack die peacfully in that iconic bamboo grove, looking up toward the sky and a plane taking his friends home, I pictured what life Jack really gave to them. Kate and Claire raised Aaron with a love so strong, Sawyer lived a long, full life giving back in the way he had taken so much, Desmond growing old with Penny and watching their son Charlie discover the world, even Frank, Miles, and Richard found lives that had true purpose and actual end. Ben and Hugo stayed as guardians of the island, sharing the blessing, not burden, together. Now, I am at peace with LOST. I am at peace because six years ago complete strangers crash landed on an island of mystery. They were broken, battered, flawed, and horribly incomplete. Last night though, we saw friends is the place of strangers, people who were made complete by their love for one another and their understanding of this little island of miracles. RIP LOST.

Huge disappointment. I feel kind of betrayed and am a bit appalled at all the people here so happy about simply getting an “emotional” ending. For the entire season I've felt like I'm watching a different show than for the previous seasons. It was kind of obvious this one episode can't pull it off. My biggest gripe is that this whole season seems so much worse planned than anything previously. The sum of my gripes, or simply: POOR WRITING:
- People do stuff with such a strange and unfitting motivations: Sawyer doesn't want to be at the temple, Hurley obeying a ghost-Michael's (empty) threat, Sayid becoming “ill” but turning good again, Ben turning his coat faster than one can say Widmore
- Just SO many plotlines left dangling, that have been used previously to give the show strong air of mystery, now left completely unchecked because “we have to concentrate on people”? With that much running back and forth, they could've done it so much better. Examples: Outrigger, food drops/fate of Dharma/Lamp Post, Eloise Hawking's skills
- The whole sideways was after all one huge scam. I simply don't care that much for the dead souls in heaven or purgatory or afterlife, and the show wasted approx. half of the season just to show the lives of ghosts, life that wasn't at all real to begin with? And the island at the bottom of the see in LAX was just a setup for that scam anyway! Even the bomb that was the whole point of latter season 5 didn't do ANYTHING else than mysteriously blast them back to the future – surely the nature of afterlife doesn't depend on a single nuclear explosion? SOOOO badly handled!
- This brings another point; the show had so many things going on, like the course correction theme, up until this season. They could've, for instance kept that and have the whole sideways-story simply match the real story at some point with many small time corrections (and a span of 4 years, 2004-2008), so that in the end there would've been no two but one seamlessly merged reality. But no, every thematic they had previosly, was simply thrown away
- So many people were wasted especially at the end for the convenience of the writers. Case in point: Charles Widmore. In the Shape of Things to come, it was established that there were rules preventing Ben killing him. It would've made perfect sense to have Ben use that rule to save him to have some PURPOUSE in the finale by shooting him before MiB's knife. That way, Widmore, the mysterious big schemer behind things would've served something in the show. Now a) he just happended to wonder into the Otherville? WHY for heavens sake if he had protection in place? b) The writes simply dropped the rules even though it was just made a big fuss in the previous episodes c) Ben just murdered someone in cold blood because that was convenient for him and nobody cares, he's still a good guy!!? WHAT?
I did like how the island reality's end was handled (although, take the magic cork out, put it back, everythings fine – argh!), but as a sum… I simply loved the series up to season 6 but ultimately it failed it's promise so bad that now I don't quite frankly know what to feel.

Hey fans out there.. one word: INSANE !!!! This is the best TV Show ever!!

Question: does anyone know when the actual Lost finale is supposed to air?
I mean, this episode was quite diverting and emotional but it was undoubtfully nothing but a well-designed twist to make people wait for the true ending. A finale which will take our breaths away, not this shitty piece of obscurantism intented only to make people cry without any respect for the stories of the characters and the island itself.
I simply can't imagine that this was the best conclusion the talented Darlton could come out with. I simply can't imagine they could have been a tiny bit satisfied with this absolute lack of story.
So my question is simple: when is the true ending supposed to air?

I'm an atheist and believe strongly in the scientific method over faith, but at the end of the day this was a fictional television show so I don't care it went down that road (assuming its not open to further interpretation). It had such an impact on me because of the character resolutions we saw. I got goosbumps went I thought back to Eloise Hawking's sad desperate words to Desmond to keep her son back in a world where she didn't kill him for the island, and let him be a musician. And Jack's conclusion was both simultaneously sad but also uplifting.

I've got a question that I haven't seen answered here. Why would Jack randomly begin bleeding in the flashforward? I don't think that was ever explained.
Also, I found it really touching when Kate said “I've missed you so much”. It sounds like she lived for several more decades

Completely amazing finale. It was so well done, I didn't care about the mysteries that weren't answered. The story and the emotions overtook them. I prefer this closure to the characters and their stories rather then a closure to the mysteries.
I cried so hard when Vincent laid down next to Jack before he died. How could you not? And then when I saw Jack's eye, when it shuts, and he dies I completely broke out in tears.
It was truly amazing, emotional, and genius.

The first 2 hours were AMAZING. Perfect.
Then the purgatory twist came and… Ok, it was beautifully done and the eye shot at the end was really great… but it wasn't the great mindfuck I've been anticipating all those years, the one that would explain the WHOLE series. And it kinda frustrates me that it only affects the sideways timeline story (so that we don't know the true fate of the characters in the main timeline) and that they didn't tackle the main questions (what is the island, why the special things that happen in it, why them, etc.) Honestly, I always thought that metaphysical theories were the weakest ones… so having them all sitting in a church in purgatory wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
Anyway, a good finale –with some great emotional moments– and good –but not awesome– ending to a great story.

Also… ending with ALL your characters dead is not the most masterful way to tie a plot or to satisfy the viewer. It's a pretty rough thing to do, script-writing wise.
Anyway, I think the writers wanted the final legacy of the show to be an emotional one –and not an intellectual one– and they surely succeded with this deeply emotional finale.
I bet we'll have the chance to explore the mythology and to tie the loose ends when they make LOST2, ten years from now. Yeah, I said it: there will be LOST2 (Disney bought the rights, for Jacob's sake!)

LOST broke my heart — by copping out on so much of the plot (I wont list all the examples since we all know them — and there's a character limit in this box). I'm beginning to side with those who doubt that Darlton knew what they were doing from the start. They tried to use tears to wash away set ups that were never paid off. Was this really any better than “it was all a dream”? C'mon. When I saw Jack and Flocke running at each other on the cliff, I knew compelling storytelling with interesting conclusions had left the building. What a crying shame. I felt bad for the actors — esp Terry O'Quinn, who had given tour de force performances for Flocke and Sideways Locke. Too bad both character arcs resolved with a cliche and a whimper. The first 2 seasons were fantastic. 3 thru 6 were good with a sprinkle of great here and there. The finale? You know my position.

I think you're right. It's not gonna be Darlton — but someone will continue this — and they've left a big opening for just that. New writers will salivate at the opportunity. And I'm sure some of the old cast will want the paycheck in a few years.

It looks like everyone's gonna have to wait for Pearson Moore to explain to them what happened. Since it takes a scholar to obviously decifer human conversation. If people would have just listened to the characters speaking to each other, and how they had went about things, then you would have gotten the show. So frustrating.

That's why the phrase “What happened, happened” was on the show, because there time on the island happened, and the sideways universe was purgatory. People are making lost seem like a bad show, because of lack of attention.

The show was always about the people, so if you were waiting to find out about mythology stuff, you're watching the wrong show. In the 120ish episodes Lost told, only 1 of them was completely about mythology. For you to somehow expect the finale to be number 2 is a failure on your part, not the creators.

Considering that the one specific example I gave included the character arc of Locke, how can you make that silly assumption? Even in its attempt to focus on the people, it became sappy and trite. They tried something that didn't work for me. It didn't deliver on what I was hoping for — but it didn't deliver on their intended goal either — imo. Obviously you're a non-objective True Believer of the show — so I won't debate with you. I just gave my opinion on the finale; but you seem to specialize in attacking any poster on this thread who dares to criticize the finale. I'm glad you liked it. I didn't. Understanding the LOST FINALE – observations from “the end”.
Lost – Series Finale – The End/The Beginning.
Just a bunch of random ideas and thoughts about the finale that may mean nothing or may be the key to the whole series.
• Live together, Die alone was always the major theme of the show and how the characters needed to discover such a thing. They were brought to the island broken people who were alone, people that were lost, their lives were all falling apart in some way. They all had struggles, disappointments and issues. They end their journey finding love and accomplishing the things they wanted to achieve. They are no longer alone, but together with the people that came to mean the most to them.
• It was important that Jack completed his mission in saving the light because they needed this light to let go and move on together. The light on the Island that Jack saves is the light that Christian lets in at the end of the series. Whether it sends them to heaven, hell, another shrinking universe, or the island all over again is something we are left to wonder on our own. This was Jacks purpose on why he always felt the need to fix things throughout the entire series. In the end his sacrifice to the island was fixing it so that he would secure this future with the ones he loved.
• Originally we are shown flashbacks and flash forwards in seasons 1-5 that are intended to show the progress of the characters and remind them of their old ways that needed to change..the things they needed to let go of in their dead end lives..this season they were forced to remember the things they experienced on the island to come full circle and move on to the next island..world..universe..whatever it is you put in the blank when the white light comes pouring into the chuch. It wasn’t until they all remembered their island lives and each other that they were able to leave.
• They all died at different points in time however in the afterflash world, time was not relevant there was no “now”…some died before Jack had died on the island and some died long long after him. Kate, Miles, Richard, Claire and Frank go on to lead full lives off of the island and die at different points in time. Kate telling Jack that she missed him so much proves that she most likely lived a full life probably decades without him and remembers that now. Hurley and Ben went on to protect the island. For an unknown amount of time but eventually die. “Everyone dies”.
• The island was real, everything that happened actually did happen regarding the island, the past, dharma, the flashbacks, the flash forwards etc.. “Whatever happened. Happened.”Christian even expresses that the Afterflash is all real its just that its a meeting place that they created so that they would be able to find each other and move on together with the ones they love.
• Juliet saying “it worked” in the season premiere was not what we thought about the bomb going off and working..it was her mind slipping into the afterflash that we saw as a parallel all season. It was her talking about the machine releasing the candy while having her “remember moment” with Sawyer.
• Just because we never saw the island sink in the finale does not mean it has not sunk in the future. They show you in the end that when Jack replaces the cork and the water begins to flow again. Man in black makes a point in Across the sea to point out he will use the light and water to leave the island. Just because the island is sunk does not mean the light is out. Hurley and Ben may have found a way to move the island to the bottom of the ocean. Maybe its even how they eventually come to die as we see in the finale they praise each other for their time taking care of the island. He tells Ben that he was a great number two proving they indeed had much more island storyline than what we are shown.
• “It only ends once. Anything that happens before that is just progress.” is what we hear Jacob say on the beach in the Season five finale after the MIB tries to say that all people are the same corrupted and evil. We dont know where they are headed after the end but what we have seen until they have arrived was just progress. A steady process of perfecting flaws, growing closer together, and moving into a better life.
• Desmond was able to leave the island at some point in time because Hurley was not going to have the rules that Jacob had made up. This was his game now and he is now allowed to create the rules. Just like the man in black said to Jacob when he was asked about the rules of the black and white board game.
• David was created in the afterflash to show Jack how difficult a relationship between a father and son can be. Without this element in this life Jack would not be able to relate to and love his own father as much as he does. He was able to forgive his father and be at peace with him.
• The plane wreckage shown at the end of the show with footprints in the sand but no human beings around it may in fact represent the re-arrival of all of those in the church after Christian opens the door and lets the light in. As there are no bodies anywhere to be found reflects how Christians body was not in the coffin in season 1 or in season 6.
Sure there are many, many loose ends that are yet to be tied up..some may never be..some might be on the dvd set when it comes out in August as its been said there are 20 additional minutes of answers from the finale that weren’t crucial to the character driven series ending..But those answers are probably better left unanswered as it leaves us with the feeling we always got with lost..it leaves us debating and pondering..it leaves us wanting more and that in the end is a good thing cause if we had the answers to it all it wouldn’t be lost.
This is all written based on memory from watching the finale. I may need to add notes to this while rewatching it for a 4th time.

I agree with it being a different show this season from previous. The flash sideways ruined Season 6 IMO. It destroyed the continuity of the storytelling and didn't really add that much (Jack has a kid in purgatory???). I didn't see the point or understand it all that much. I would have liked it to continue without the flash sideways and agree that the course correction theme would have been great if they continued with it and resolved it using 2 timelines. Maybe the end of Season 5 should have been the end? I did enjoy the emotional aspects of the finale but season 6 overall was disjointed. The final battle/MIB story did seem anti-climatic (really pointless) and a let down compared to “the incident” story of Season 5 & rescue off the island in Season 4. I wish they would have answered all the questions they put out in the previous seasons. They could have answered more and left out the flash sideways (not have any flashes, just island story or flashes to future). I would have liked more explanations about the island, Eloise's knowledge, etc., etc. ,etc. I didn't care for the Jacob/MIB storyline explanation for the island and would have liked a King or God of the island who has always lived there or ruled it and has some grand purpose for bringing people to the island. The flash sideways were stupid because it divided one show/storyline into two and it just didn't seem real. This would be my least favourite of all seasons and I blame the flash sideways storytelling aspect for that. I got into the show from watching the first 6 episodes of Season 3 online prior to the 2nd half of season 3 starting in 2007. The exciting plot with Ben (others) added to it and was a reason I tuned in. I'd rate my favourite seasons from most to least as follows: Season 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, & 6. There was so much promise with the time travelling, Widmore/Ben power struggle, Smokey relation to the island, coarse correction, history of the island with the outer world aspects that I wish they would have extended the number of seasons needed to explain it all.

I'm a huge fan of LOST and I liked the finale a lot, however, you're still quite right. The decision to focus on the characters was not bad, the ending wasn't even bad. However, there are really some things I thought they would answer, since they seemed to build up everything for an amazing finale. Just a couple of examples: Why did they show the Smokemonster come out when Jacob threw his brother in the water but then for some reason the big answer to the incredibly dangerous Smokemonster who was the super villain was: You take the cork out and put it in again, that's it??? Back in Season 1 Claire was told she needs to raise Aaron herself, that weird man even told her to go on a plane he obviously knew would crash, but that wasn't even in the slightest way important to the show, yet at the tame it was shown it seemed to be a massively important mythology moment. Why copuld John Locke hear “Help me” in Jacob's cabin? Was that Jacob? If yes why couldn't he be seen? At the moment this too looked like an incredibly important piece of mythology. Wring about that one too…
Jacob and the man in black said “it only ends once”. But basically nothing ended at all??? Mighty Jacob was merely one protector of the island in a long row and the island just changed its protector from Jacob to Jack and then to Hurley? In a way this takes away the drama effect of Jacob being stabbed. So he was stabbed by Ben. So what? And the things I'm talking about here are not tiny unimportant mythology elements. They are all core elements that were created in order to make the show interesting, which it was at the time, but is it still now? One last thing: What did they know from the very beginning? Was is only the fact that Jack would die, his eye closing? It seems to be like that, because I somehow was waiting for a finale-revelation in the island, but that wasn't even there…

Well, I just expected the writers to:
- Tie the main character arcs and giving redemption to some of them (ex: TrueLocke, MIB, Ben, etc.). Having all them dead and “redeemed in heaven” instead is on the Jehovah's Witnessess side of lame.
- Giving us an ending that would explain (or at least, tackle) the **MAIN PLOT** of the series: What is the Island? Why does it move in time and why it has magical powers? Why does it need protection? Why were the survivors lives intertwined? Why did Jacob choose them? (the answer he gave them is weak… he visited most of them long before they were “alone”!).
It almost seems they didn't want to spoil the “gold mine” of those mysteries 'cause they're thinking in leaving things open for a future LOST 2 (with Hurley and Ben doing some cameo appearences as the Island protectors, of course). I'm sure we'll see it ten years from now.
- Giving us an ending that would explain (or at least, tackle) some key plot elements that were used to move entire seasons: What was Jacob's cabin? What was the ultimate fate of Dharma? Was Locke really special? What about Walt? Did Jughead explode? What happened in “Flashes Before Your Eyes” and why did Eloise knew what was going to happen? (this last question makes no sense to me after the finale).
- Having a great final LOST WTF moment, a mindblowing final twist –just before the title– that would make you rewatch the whole series (ok, I know this was a personal expectation and that there were many other cool ways to end it. I forgive them about this one. Although, c'mon, it would've been soooo cool).
Instead, we had:
- Some pretty good tearjerking moments.
- Some pretty good action scenes.
- A GREAT final shot (the bamboo forest scene).
- A mother#%@ng LITERAL cork… c'mon Darlton!
- A whole season about a sideways world that was designed to trick us (think about the –now meaningless– shot of the sunken Island in the premiere of the sixth season) that finally ended in a deistic Jehovah's Witness cop-out: “Oh, they all die eventually (you don't get to know how) but hey, don't worry, there's a heaven after death and they all live happily ever after in it!”. For me, that last ten minutes devalue the LOST experience a little bit.
I don't know if that's way beyond what I should have expected… I think the writing itself made me expect those things.
Don't get me wrong, I think it was a good finale and a good ending for the series… but yeah, I expected something awesome and mindblowing… and it wasn't. So maybe you're right and the problem's in my expectations. Anyway, I stick to my point: the writing through the series made me expect all those things.

Island was sunk, because none of the oceanic survivors wanted the island, so it wasn't in this spiritual life that they created.
The whole spiritual passing twist. Jack's son. People think that he was just a pointless character, but he was more than that. Jack always wanted his father to tell him the things that he told his son during whichever episode it was that revealed Jack had a son. Everybody in this spiritual recollection had there lives in a better manner. James didn't want to become a con artist, so in his spiritual passing he was better, he was a cop. Kate wanted her step father to be punished for the things he did to her mother, but she didn't want to be guilty of what she did, and so on and so forth for the other characters.
And to say that it was a Jehovah's Witness cop-out just makes you seem critical. Not once did it specify a religion. I'm not even religious and I thought the end was wonderful.
Why would we want to know how they died? Would you have rather seen them all just pile up and blow up in the season finale? OH WAIT! They could've had a still picture of the end survivors and a paragraph explaining what happened to them after Jack died. That would've been way better.
Locke being special? Locke believed in what made him feel better. Just like he told Ben in the last episode “What did I have?” (or something in that nature) after Ben had apologized.
Jughead did explode because obviously they got blasted into the normal timeline. Kind of in the first episode of the last season.
Walt banged some ho and got her pregnant. So what.
To me. Not revealing what the island was or anything like that, was because Darlton almost really didn't have a clue on what it could be, and because none of the survivors were drawn to that.
What happened to the Dharma Initiative? I could care less.
The show was character specific, and character driven, and they redeemed every single character in that church by doing what they did. Because all in all, the “Main Plot” of the show was never the island, it was Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer, Sayid, Ben, Hurley and every other person on that show.
You weren't happy with the ending because you weren't watching it for the right reasons.

No, you weren't. You're just imagining the show was what you wanted it to be and fabricating justifications for it. The fact is none of those things were told in the finale, they only exist in your mind.
One could have a complete different interpretation on each one of the points you mentioned. For instance: Jughead didn't explode, there just was a time flash (where's the crater?). But I'm not playing that game. Interpretating the show is fun. It's just kinda frustrating they left the MAIN plot points of the series (why were their lifes intertwined, what's the island, etc.) up to interpretation. You're free to believe your personal fabrication is the canon truth. But it isn't, it's just your interpretation.

If you think about it, you could end almost any story with that plot-device: “And then they all died, but they went to Heaven and they were happy forever”.
Try it with Matrix, Crime and Punishment, Seven, Alice in Wonderland, Star Wars… Anything. It just makes every story worse.
It really was a very strong finale on the emotional side. My intellectual side is disappointed, though.

But the whole point of the flash sideways is that they needed each other before they could live 'happily ever after'. That's where the connections that these characters have had in their lives with each other are important for them to move on. e.g. Jack had a son to overcome his daddy issues which he didn't get to overcome during his life. All the other characters helping him realise he was dead so he could let go and therefore enter the 'light' – the same 'light' which Jack had protected on the Island. If he hadn't done that then 'everyone that you love would cease to be'.
His actions on the Island enabled them all to be able to go to the next life. It gave Jack's actions on the Island context.

It was Smokey in the Cabin who pleaded for John Locke to 'help' him i.e. help him get off the Island.
Regarding it all ending once, I think what Jacob meant was that he would finally get someone who was good in nature. MIB always felt that humans were evil in nature, hence they 'come, destroy, corrupt – it always ends the same'. Whereas Jacob thought not, that they were in fact good in nature and that would be evident in him finding a successor in protecting the Island.
That's what I took from it anyway.

Yes – the H bomb created 'The Incident' which they were trying to avoid (and which Marvin Candle mentioned in the Dharma videos), which caused the hatch to be made, which lead to the button needing to be pressed, which lead to Desmond not pressing it on time and the plane crashing on the Island.
It also sent them to the current time (i.e. 2007)

So much of this show was about viewers being able to provide their own interpretations – that much has been clear from Season One. There isn't always one universal truth. I hope I'm wrong, but you seem like a viewer who wouldn't be happy with anything short of detailed schematics for the Tawaret statue and in-depth blueprints of the Frozen Donkey Wheel. If it mattered to the characters, it was included in the show. End of story.
As for your persistent references to LOST 2 definitely happening with some (any) of the original cast? Not a chance. The people who worked on this masterpiece respect the story and each other far too much for that to happen. If Disney choose to continue the property, it will involve a brand new team of writers, actors and (more than likely) production crew. It wouldn't be a patch on what preceded it, and would probably get bogged down in pointless expositional mythology. You would probably love it.
For the record – I'm a hardcore athiest, but I really liked the finale. And the more time I have to reflect on it, the more I'm beginning to love it. A celebration of humanity, and the value added to our lives by interacting and embracing others. If only all followers of religion were as enlightened.

There are a few things i still don't get. They were already dead when they arrived to the island ? If not, how do you explain the visions, time traveling, smoke monster, polar bears, etc, etc, etc ?
If they were dead… they were in purgatory, and that's what the island was, right ? Jacob and MIB being god and the devil… and so, one of the first theories about Lost was completely right, and D&C lied (or they just didn't actually knew the end back then)
If they were dead in the island… when did they die ? with the plane crash ? they were dead from before? (From the time Jacob found them “in real life”, like when Sawyer's parents died, when Locke fell down the building, etc)

You're right. As many as I can think of, I keep finding a few more. I didn't expect everything to be resolved — as a few dangling mysteries are appropriate for this kind of show. But you can't emphasize all this elements for years then drop them in the end. The concept of the lobby of Heaven would work fine as an epilogue — but to make that the only thing that mattered goes against the set ups we've been watching up to that point. I didn't read anything extra into this show; they pointed me in directions for what I thought was an ultimate purpose. Instead I got “none of this matters b/c we're all gonna die” as the message.

No, Carlos: I couldn't care less about the mythology. A New York Times article yesterday said there were trhee typse of LOST fans: those who watch it because of the characters –great cast, engaging personalities– , those who watch it because of the writing –the endless cliffhangers, the constant narrative whiplash, the mobius-strip plotting, and the way the show could blithely disassemble and reassemble its narrative architecture–, and those who love the mythology –the Taweret kind you refer–. I love all three aspects, but I'm of the kind who watch it because the writing.

They talked enough about the mythology during the course of the season. And if someone was gravely disappointed in the finale because they wanted more island stuff…well, then that's their fault. This was a character centered show all the way, which is why LITERALLY half the series was spent with off-island scenes.
In my opinion, they answered almost all of the island stuff that mattered to me. The very few dangling questions I have about the mythology won't ruin any ending for me.
Btw Rich, I kind of agree with you about the ending. I was expecting something that would make me be able to have a completely different view of the series as I rewatch. We didn't get that. The one they gave us will let me do that for season six, so I am still satisfied with it, and the way theyvjudt wrapped it up in general.

I would attest that anyone who distinguishes between “the characters” and “the writing” is a little naive as to exactly what it is writers do. The narrative you describe is character-driven.
Judging from the questions you want answers for listed above (“What is the Island? Why does it move in time and why does it have magical powers? Why does it need protection? Why were the survivors' lives intertwined? What was Jacob's cabin? What was the ultimate fate of Dharma? Was Locke really special? What about Walt? Did Jughead explode? What happened in “Flashes Before Your Eyes” and why did Eloise knew what was going to happen? etc etc) it would appear that the mythology is exactly you're really interested in; hence your disappointment with the finale.
Perhaps if you could get over that fact and *engage emotionally* (which is the entire point of all fiction) then you could appreciate the show (and finale) for the masterpiece that it is.

But none of those did, and Lost did. Just because they told the simple truth that everyone dies doesn't make the ending bad. They gave characters heaven because they had sacrificed, in the end, so much for each other and the rest of the world.

Come on, MainTh3_3nd, that's pushing it too far. Of course Damon, Carlton, JJ and the writers know what the island is. They just chose not to tell us.
Yeah, you could come up with simple explanations: it could be Atlantis, the Garden of Eden, San Borondon Island… It could even be an alien spaceship (lol) that is stuck in earth, and that's why it has electromagnetism and why it travels through space-time (thus the smoke monster could be a alien species)
… Or, as Jimmy Kimmel said, the island could also be part of Purgatory (Jack died in the plane crash and the whole island story was a “test” that he eventually passed, as we saw in the finale).
I'm not saying I believe those things to be true –I don't!– I'm just proving that you could imagine an explanation and work the show towards it in its last act.
What I mean is that it CAN be explained, and that they obiously had an explanation for it since the very beginning. It just seems they thought that revealing it to us was “to enter midiclorian territory”… They thought that telling us the island is just “a place where miracles happen” should be enough for telling the story they wanted to tell; but they know the whole picture and the whole backstory of it.

Anyone who criticizes the finale is labeled a “mythology” person for some reason. What made LOST compelling for me was that it was (seemingly at the start) attempting to integrate ALL the elements that the NYT and other sources are trying to divide into types. The scope of the attempt was what made it attractive — not ONLY statues, not ONLY dysfunctional characters with daddy issues, not ONLY men of science or faith, not ONLY a billow of black smoke, not ONLY a set of numbers, not ONLY the Others or the Dharma initiative, not ONLY romantic quadrangles. It was about how all these things were going to tie together in the end. Clearly something changed along the way. They abandoned most of it for some reason — and gave us flashback montages of every sentimental moment — and a pre-Heaven meet and greet at a church — instead. Through the tears I could still see that they copped out on any attempt to bring all the seemingly disparate elements together into an interesting and organic whole (that we might even be able to figure out if we were clever enough.) Widmore, Ben, Jacob and MiB weren't the only ones to break/change the rules. Darlton did the same with the rules of drama. Writing is plot AND characterization AND theme AND style — all part of an indivisible whole — or should be.

I'm just interested in those things as plot-devices. They were key elements that moved really long story arcs and affected the characters deeply. The whole premise of the show was: “you can't figure it out yet, but this is going to be REALLY meaningful and you'll see”.
They put the biggest and more interesting Chekhov's guns ever on the stage, and had the main characters wonder about them and play with them… just to drop the final curtain before they discover what they mean.
For instance, think of season 3 and the all pregnancy issues. It was a PIVOTAL plot device. But I don't care about the fake science behind it! What I care for is “why” was it so important for the story and for the characters (Ben, Ethan, the Others, Sun, etc.). We'll never know why children can't be conceived on the island: they just can't.
When you put a character getting off a wheelchair in the 4th episode of the series, and you imply that it's because a mysterious supernatural Island, and you make the character change radically because of it and start an epic life-quest in the search for answers to that miracle… you are making the answers to those questions a CENTRAL plot-point. If you don't let your character get to them, you violate Chekhov's gun rule, thus leaving the viewers frustrated –though you can compensate with some cheesy slo-mo montages of the best moments of the story, so they forget–.
This show wasn't only about the characters –though it was one of its main and more important elements–, it was also about the mythological themes (if you don't see it, you watched a different show) and –as important as those– the thrill of the narrative techniques (cliffhangers, twists, mysteries, story intertwining, etc.), the writing style.

You attest that “the whole premise of the show was: 'you can't figure it out yet, but this is going to be REALLY meaningful and you'll see'” – I couldn't disagree more with this statement. That may have been how you chose to watch Lost, but I assure you the vast majority of fans didn't.
The pregnancy issues could be explained in several ways – leftover radiation from Jughead, a decision from Jacob to not allow any more children to be corrupted by the island, etc – if you were willing to do a little work yourself and not wait to be spoonfed answers you would surely understand. I would love you to write a sample of an expositional scene you would like to see where a hard-and-fast answer is given to the pregnancy issues, where it seems natural and not forced (like the answer to “the whispers” did).
Locke getting out of the wheelchair explanation – the island had healing powers. People were brought to the island to prove that they could live good lives, and were given every chance to do so, irrespective of health problems.
I truly feel sad for you that you have invested 120-odd hours into this show without the most basic grasp of how it handled it's storytelling. People who complain about the finale seem to have been expecting a completely different episode from a completely different show, which would basically involve Lindelof and Cuse looking down a lens and reading off explanations.
Perhaps you'll come back to Lost down the line and appreciate it for what it was – the best television show ever made.

Yes, that's what i thoguth the entire six seasons… i would love to know what the island was, and explanation to all the weirdness that was going on:
- A good and a bad guy (god and devil ?) managing the island
- Polar bears
- Hydrogen bomb exploding, allowing time travel (wtf)
- An island that was able to move in a matter of seconds
- Smoke monster (hello?)
- Magic numbers that were being transmitted endlessly
- Connection between the light in the island with the light (heaven?) they all were going after that church
And i can go on for hours… Now, don't get me wrong, i was a HUGE lost fan, i couldn't wait for a new episode to air. But all they (producers) were saying is that every question will have an answer, that we wait and see how beautiful everything was going to come together, amazing coincidences, etc, etc
And to me sounds like they HAD to finish the show, so they took an easy path, made a few coincidences with past episodes, and they lived happily ever after…
I don't know, i'm a bit disappointed, i just wanted answers to all the weird stuff… perhaps (as some other comment up there states) i was watching the show for the wrong reason, but after visiting and reading a lot of forums from Lost fans, they all seem to be wondering the same questions i am.
And again, seems like a lot of people just loooove the end and try to justify it saying “they wanted us to figure out what the island was for us” and stuff like that… they seem to me like blind fanatics that would had find a nice explanation if they didn't showed us an ending at all.
Me, i just don't want to figure out stuff by myself… if i want to do that, i will come up with my own story, instead of watching a tv show

Ok, I took the week and even watched The End two more times. I still think it was great!
I avoided these post until I spoke with friends and family who watched the series. Two on a “stick with it” basic and and four who just “jumped in and out” of seasons.
The steady ones enjoyed the ending and were given more anwsers than they expected. The others (no pun intended) complainted because they didn't have a clue. Or, as in my daughters case, because it didn't end as she thought it would. After rewatching the final again thought, she confessed it was a great ending to the best TV show that has ever been written. Great stars, writers, producers, directors, music and support crews.
We all agreed we did not want to see a 'Lost Part 2'. Could you do a second “Gone With The Wind?”
“The Ten Commandments?” I think the majority of you would agree. I would llike to see the extra 12 to 14 minutes of “Hurley/Ben” tour though.
I will wait until after the first of the year and watch it all again and enjoy it again.
