Lindelof on Season 6: We’ll Address The Meaning of the Numbers

Lindelof’s work on “Lost” is coming to a close with the sixth and final season airing in just four months. “People keep saying, ‘Wow, it must be really sad for you guys,’ but I feel that excitement is the prevailing emotion,” he explained. “We’ve written over a hundred and ten hours of ‘Lost,’ now, and it’s been basically the same sort of family doing the show since the beginning, and I think we are all looking forwards to ending it. Every story has a beginning, middle and end, and as sad as it is sometimes to end a story, it’s also incredibly liberating and exciting. Every scene that we write is one scene closer to the inevitable, so it feels pretty good. I don’t know if anyone is going to like it, but at least we are delivering on our promise to answer some stuff.”

While Damon is looking forward to delivering the answers of many of the questions that have come up on “Lost,” he doesn’t plan on answering them all. “I don’t think it would be ‘Lost’ if we answered every question to every viewer’s satisfaction,” Lindelof said. “I mean, there are some people who are still asking us ‘What’s the story with Kate’s toy plane?’ and there is nothing more to say about it; we’ve definitively answered that question to the best of our ability on the show, so you won’t be hearing anymore about the toy plane. That being said, there are other sort of meta questions, like, what do the numbers mean, that we will be addressing more directly in the final season. But some people will feel like, ‘Wow, they answered more than I thought they ever would about that question,’ and some people will say ‘What a hose job, I am so unsatisfied!’ Our goal is to land in the middle of the ‘hose jobers’ and the ‘too much informationers,’ because you can’t make everybody happy.”

Some answers that Lindelof is willing to give fans now are to questions about who may or may not be appearing in the final season. “Most of the questions that we get asked are ‘Is so-and-so coming back?’ or ‘Are we going to see more of so-and-so?’ and I feel like that if I know the answer to that question, the fans sort of deserve a ‘Yes, that is something you should be looking forward to,’ or ‘Don’t get your hopes up for that because it’s not going to happen.’ I don’t want you to tune in waiting for the Great American Libby story, because it’s not coming.”

They basically say that Libby was in the mental hospital because of her husband's death. They were going to explain what she was doing on Australia that led to her being on Flight 815, and they said those who speculated that she worked for Widmore were "barking up the right tree." We all know that S4 got cut short because of the writer's strike, and that the background episodes for Faraday, Miles, and Charolette, so it's safe to assume that she had some connection to them and Naomi's crew.

Sure, it's not wrapped up in a nice little package, but it's good enough for me.

Or Lindeloff and Cuse are lieing about some things as to not give away too much... It's definitely been done in the past. Just a thought though.

I think Libby's story is as simple as her husband David died, she gave his boat to Desmond and he went missing. These 2 events caused her to go crazy and she ended up in the mental insitution. I think Hurley's imaginary friend "Dave" is her dead husband, since we know he can see dead people. It kind of blows that they won't show her story (whatever it is) and act like Cynthia Watros is no longer interested in coming back. I thought they kind of wasted her time when she returned in Season 4.

Not to mention at Comic-Con when someone asked about Libby somehow having a connection to the DI, they said they weren't barking up the wrong tree. Why would they say things like that if they had no intention of answering it? I know sometimes they're sarcastic but I don't think this was one of those times. There was an explanation, but at some point changed their mind about showing it. Very dissapointing. Maybe they will say what it was supposed to be once the show is over.

Why are they so bitter about the Libby thing?

If they didn't want fans to constantly nag them about it, then they shouldn't have made the ending of 'Dave' all dramatic and make it seem like the fact she was in the mental hospital actually meant something!

Seriously, their attitude regarding giving answers annoys me a bit. And I'll be very disappointed if Walt's powers don't come up again, that's probably the most blatant example of a mystery they set up and apparently later dropped.

If they didn't want to waste time with her they shouldn't have shown her at the mental hospital.

I have to disagree with you kyle. Libby still is a mystery. I don't care if they don't answer the small things. But Libby is a huge mystery that was never answered. I'm really upset that they won't answer that.

And here I was thinking the numbers would not be adressed like Damon said since season 2. XD

"I don’t want you to tune in waiting for the Great American Libby story, because it’s not coming.”

Thank god. For a while there I thought the fans may have actually gotten to them about that question. That they would waste valuable time answering something that's not a mystery just to appease some lunatics. She's obviously not significant. Let her rest in peace.
