UPDATE: Michael Emerson had just flown back to New York City from L.A. last night and was making scrambled eggs and bacon with his wife, True Blood’s Carrie Preston (who is nursing a cold), when he received word of his third nomination for Lost. “I’m here in my bra and panties trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the day,” says Emerson, who previously won an Emmy for a guest role on The Practice.
“Maybe it’s that the Ben character is so mysterious,” muses the actor of his repeated nominations. His favorite scene of the previous season was his rescue and then murder of John Locke. “I will never forget shooting that. I think it’s one of the greatest scenes of the series and the greatest scene I ever participated in on the series.”
Lost was also nominated for Best Drama. “I’m so thrilled for Damon and Carlton,” says Emerson of his producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. This vindicates the pleasure they bring to so many people.”
Emerson reports to work in Hawaii in late August to begin shooting the sixth and final season. “I’m expecting lots of casualties this season,” he says. “It’s the last year. Some people got to get hurt. I’m hoping I may get at least close to the end.”
He says he was “flummoxed” by May’s fifth season finale. “I understand now that the control of the island goes back to ancient times and is part of some chain of command that is immortal. Jacob is not like you and me. He has been going on since Egyptian times it seems. But how he came by his superhuman state, I don’t know. And is he kill-able? He couldn’t have lasted all this time only to be stabbed by me and go up in flames.”

Lost’s Michael Emerson, who received his third straight Emmy nomination for best supporting actor told USA TODAY’s Gary Strauss that it’s a particular honor “because it comes from your peer group. At the same time, there’s grief because you’re in a group with actors like (Mad Men’s) John Slattery. I love that guy. But to me, it continues to be about the writing. Everything goes back to the scripts.”
Emerson won a 1997 Emmy for a guest role in ABC legal drama The Practice.
