He tried to prevent his being stabbed by some Klingons and saw all the consequences that this had on his life (not becoming Captain etc). All of this happened because "Q" (a God-like 'alien') gave him the chance to relive those experiences differently so that at the end of the show he could wake up and be happy about his heart-transplant, looking at his chest smiling. I think this might be what happens in LOST: They are all experiencing an alternate reality so that whatever happens in this "the plane never crashed"-reality, will make the LOSTIES realize they actually had to crash and will then be brought back to the "real" universe again (by Jacob, obviously also a god-like creature like "Q" in Star Trek NG?) What do you think about it guys?
