Damon & Carlton Comment LOST’s Latest Casualty
Cast and Crew of Lost, Interviews, Season 5 View Comments
TVGuide has a new interview with Damon and Carlton. Do NOT read it unless you have watched last night’s episode!
And you thought the next grave was going to be Juliet’s… Wrong!
Time-traveling expert Daniel Faraday (nicknamed “Twitchy” by Sawyer) has become the latest Lostie to bite the big one, leaving the 1970′s Dharmaville outcasts to fend for themselves just when they need him most.
Executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof commend Jeremy Davies for pulling off an increasingly bizarro role–and taking the news of his firing better than any of their previous island victims.
“For us, Faraday really was the cornerstone of the fifth season–he really shined,” says Lindelof. “I can’t imagine what Season 5 would have looked like without Jeremy Davies. When you think about all the crazy stuff that had to come out of that guy’s mouth, for him to be as interesting and emotional and poetic as he was is really extraordinary.”
Lindelof and Cuse say they were impressed by how gracefully Davies dealt with his dismissal. While disappointed to be losing a paycheck, the actor saw his departure as essential to their storytelling. Lindelof says, “When Carlton and I called Jeremy to explain what was going to be happening with Faraday, we’ve never had a more awesome exit interview with somebody on the show.”
“It was an incredibly painful thing to kill this beloved character,” Cuse adds, “but we feel that’s what this show has to do. His death is kind of the culminating event in the entire season. It really ends one chapter and commences the start of the final chapter of the entire series. Once we explained that to Jeremy, while he was personally saddened that his full-time status on Lost was coming to an end, he put the story above his own personal self.” (Hmmm…notice Cuse’s wording: “full-time status”.)
So why was now the right time to do him in?
“When we kill off a character we want the audience to say, ‘How dare you!,’ not, ‘It’s about time,’” explains Lindelof, who was particularly impressed with Davies’ final scenes. “He has never been better than he was in ‘The Variable.’”
Michael Emerson, who plays Ben, praises Davies as “a great sensitive guy who got deep into his character. He really lived it.” (And died it!)
Around the set, Terry O’Quinn (John Locke) will miss Davies and the music that always accompanied him. “Most actors walk around with headphones, but Jeremy would walk around holding a miniature boom box,” recalls O’Quinn. “He always wanted to provide music for everyone–whether they wanted it or not. Everybody would go, ‘What’s up with this dude?’”
O’Quinn remembers the time Davies brought his boom box out into the water during an action scene. “We were out paddling in a canoe with me, Ken Leung (Miles), Josh (Sawyer), Jeremy and Elizabeth (Juliet) and we ended up flipping a half mile out to sea. The first thing I thought of when I came up was, ‘I hope Jeremy’s f—ing boom box went to the bottom–and it did. But he replaced it real quick.”
Davies won’t be so easily replaced. Do you think Faraday was killed off too soon? Or were you tired of his time-traveling jargon?

It’s wonderful to hear Davies was so nice about no longer being on “full time” status. It’s also encouraging to hear that he’s only dropped out of full time status- here’s hoping he’s got part time status! He really did do an incredible job. I wonder if I could watch him in another role playing someone more composed. LOL

The talk about Jeremy and his boom box made me smile.

Honestly, I’m most upset by Daniel’s death than anyone else on the show. He was still useful and could provide a lot of help on the island. I didn’t feel his story was complete.
Live on Jeremy, hold your boom box high.

LONG LIVE FARADAY!

I’m VERY UPSET about this! Faraday was my favorite and most beloved character on this show. It seems incredibly unfair of them to do that. It was so hard for me to watch, I was in denial that they actually killed him until I read this. But, after reading it, I don’t know. Maybe I’ve come to terms with it and seen that there’s a reason. Well there’s a reason for everything on this show. And I don’t feel like this is the last time we’ll see Daniel Faraday! And kudos to Jeremy Davies…. I mean, really! What an amazing actor, he NAILED that role. He’s incredible.

*sigh* poor Daniel… How can young Ben survive a blow to the chest, and Daniel can’t? Ughhhhh!!!
April 30th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
I was really hoping that this was another “Is he dead?” scenarion, but this confirms that he really is dead. Bummer. It was so enjoyable with Jeremy Davies playing Daniel, he is pretty much what made most of season 4 and almost the whole of season 5. Let’s hope we see him again in some form or another.

am i just not smart enough? do we know why faraday was crying when he was watching the fake 815 wreckage on tv? i feel like they still didn’t explain that even though they revisited to scene
April 30th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Yeah Jeremy nailed that role and I’ll miss him. I trust Darlton so the death upsets me. Now if Locke got killed off for good I’d be calling for heads, so I understand why some are upset. RIP Daniel Faraday.

hey! if suppously daniel faraday is dead… how can you explain the video from comic con 2008 that appears piere chang and in the background is the voice of Daniel saying is useless
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gygsaaqLTjo
that is what I want to ask Carlton a Damon!
April 30th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
It sucks that he had to die but if Darlton says it’s essential to the show, then I’m OK with it. Although I agree with Down24 that if they killed off Locke(for good) I would be pissed.
April 30th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
I’m agree with Panchoracer… WHAT ABOUT THE COMIC CON VIDEO?… If Daniel is dead that means ANOTHER big continuity error from Season 5.
April 30th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
” I trust Darlton so the death upsets me.”
Oops I meant doesn’t upset me. Sorry I missed that.

On another website, the writers said that the Comic Con Video was promotional, meaning, it was to introduce the season as a whole. From this, I gather that it didn’t have to necessarily fit in with the actual show’s plotline. Just a thought.

I dont think Daniel is dead. I feel that jack&kate will take him to the temple to make him better. Right, the temple cured Ben.

I think Faraday is dead and won’t be brought back to life. He might appear to people in future episodes (like Hurley) or be able to communicate to the characters (like Miles, and to Kate & Jack via his journal). But I think dead is dead =/
I also think his death was essential to the story. While I was very frustrated that Faraday’s own mother sent him back to the island only to kill him, I think there’s reason behind her madness. I think Ms. Hawking knew that Faraday needed to die in order for him not to mess with the space-time continuum, or whatever you call it. The “incident” needs to happen and the Hatch needs to be built, because you can’t change the past.
RIP Faraday, you will be missed!

I’m really upset about Daniel. I loved him and am really going to miss him. I almost feel as if I’m in mourning. They need to give us a reasonable explanation for why Daniel’s mother shot him. From my vantage point– he was a sensitive and loving genius who his mother used and abused!

im tired of all this time travelling nonsense, but faraday was cool though
May 4th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Darlton, how dare you?? Killing off Far? One of the most attracting, complex, fascinating character and one of the most important? One the best actors?
So who’s next, Desmond? And then Locke, and Ben?
Guys, you deserve a Season 6 with Hurley, Jin, Sayid, Phil, Rose, Bernard, a bunch of old Cockoonies (Widmore, Hawking, Jack’s grand, the Korean tycoon, Christian, Hanso) and the veeery interesting Aaron, Charlie jr, Jin-Seng, Walt.
And of course Vincent.
And Miles speaking with Frogurt.

@Jangras: Jin-Seng???
