lol what Sean said at the end is basically what Ive been thinking the smoke monster was for since the begining of the show. I graduated univeristy with a degree in classical history, and I recognized a huge similarity when it comes to the smoke monster. Egyptology is really an influence on this show so far, according to the book of the dead, your heart was weighed against the weight of a feather if you were good you body was able to cross over into the afterlife, but if you were evil your being was fed to "the devourer of souls", later the Greeks crated thier own version of this afterlife myth and the devourer became Cerberus. Just and interesting fact, I think the smoke monster is just that, it judges people, good or bad; even with Eko, he was judged to be evil and he did not repent, thus he was killed.
I also really like how the writers incorperate main themes of classic books as well, we've heard "the lord of the flies" mentioned in the early seasons of Lost, normally refering to the capacity of becoming savage. but i think the smoke monster has alot of symbolism with that book as well, in the book there is "a monster in the jungle" that all the characters fear, but it turns out that the monster is the manifestation of the evil within themselves.

Just a thought, I've wanted to post my theories about the monster for a while now.
