Rebecca Mader Didn’t Change Charlotte’s Age. Darlton Apologise: “It Was Our Mistake”
Cast and Crew of Lost View Comments
In last week’s official LOST Podcast, EPs Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse attempted to explain Charlotte’s age discrepancy (according to Ben, she was born in 1979, but we saw her alive in 1974) by claiming that Rebecca Mader asked to change her age in an earlier script.
Yesterday, Rebecca fired back on her MySpace Channel:

Pissed
I just wanted to say that I NEVER changed my age on the set of LOST as Damon and Carlton accused me of on the most recent LOST podcast.
Charlotte Lewis was ALWAYS meant to be 28 and born in 1979.
It was written in the script EP # 402 of which I have a copy and I can prove this!
They made a mistake.
They are making it MY fault.
NOT COOL.
Reached for comment by Michael Ausiello last evening, Damon and Carlton now admit that they got their facts wrong:

Rebecca is absolutely right and we apologize to both her and the entire fan community for screwing up the story. By way of explanation, here’s what happened:
There were a gazillion questions about the timeline discrepancy in that young Charlotte clearly exists in 1974, but wasn’t supposed to be born until 1979, per a single line of dialogue courtesy of Ben back in episode #402. When we inquired as to how this happened, the intel came back that we used Rebecca Mader’s birthday, July 2, 1979 because she was actually eight years YOUNGER than the character as originally conceived/scripted. We misremembered this as having come from Rebecca herself on the set, but in fact, it came several days earlier when our continuity expert Gregg Nations pointed it out and suggested using Rebecca’s actual birthday for Charlotte. And so, the mistake was OURS. Rebecca’s production draft DID have the date as being 1979.
Our first mistake was the timeline gaffe, but the much more significant one was wrapping Rebecca up in this when she had nothing to do with it. Not her fault on any level. It was our bad. One hundred percent. We will say as much in a very special “Eating Crow” edition of our Podcast tomorrow. Speaking of which, what a wonderful world we live in where we can make a comment in a Podcast that triggers a response on someone’s Facebook page and that triggers a mea culpa on someone else’s blog. Ah, technology.”
What’s your opinion about all this?

i dont like mistakes in tv shows, i think somehow, I dont have an example of how but they should try and fix this in the show somehow, maybe just say that Ben made it up, Ben knew SOME stuff but not alot and Charlotte realized this as he said it but obviously wasnt going to say her real date of birth and such in her situation at the time.

What about this:
Radzinsky drew a map on the blast door wich clues of other hatches. They are all question marks as if he has never seen them.
Also why do I see Swan logos everywhere when it’s not even built?
March 24th, 2009 at 8:18 am
They’ll fix it somehow late in the season.
March 24th, 2009 at 8:21 am
my god! LOST writers NOT COOL! they can simply admit they screwed up it’s not a very very big deal!
March 24th, 2009 at 8:34 am
Ok they’ve made a mistake, and – fortunatley – admit it.
I think there are several (forced) ways to fix this:
1) They could tell us that the little girl that we’ve seen is not Charlotte, she could be her older sister (to explain red hair)
2) They could tell us that Charlotte was born in 1979 – as it should be – and when she was 4 she travelled back in time to 1974… explaining why we’ve seen her in ’74 at the age of about 4
What do you think?
March 24th, 2009 at 8:47 am
crap – just saying that Ben had wrong information would be better.
and wow – that thing with the blast door map is really strange. i hope they have an explanation for it.

Who cares?? 15% of women lie about their age anyways.
March 24th, 2009 at 10:51 am
And Ethan? He will be 27 years old in 2004… It’s rather incredible! Is it another mistake?
March 24th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
I agree with Jimmeh that Ben was simply helping Charlotte lie about her age.
I bet they will find a way to deal with this. Presumably they’ll have a flashback in which they explain what happened with Faraday. They could insert a newly-filmed scene with Sawyer (who was present when Ben recited Charlotte’s stats) in which he mentions that Ben said she wasn’t born for a couple years. The explanation then could be either that (a) Ben was mistaken, or (b) his information was in error, perhaps because Charlotte’s mother falsified a British birth certificate.

hmm rebecca mader was a bit of a brat about it.
she didn’t have to post it online.
she could have contacted them herself to avoid embarassing them.
they did screw up.. but she’s acting quite childish.

In terms of continuity, as long as Darlton admitted the mistake outright instead of letting us obsess over it, it’s not a huge nagging error in my opinion. All you have to do is pretend that Ben had actually said “1970,” and assume Charlotte looks young for her age. There were huge logic gaps in the Battlestar Galactica finale that a lot of people just accepted. This isn’t that big of a deal. I have a bigger problem with some of the character motivations of the O6.
As for the faulty assumptions, that’s a little irritating, especially since I like Darlton so much. I hate it when some people are so confident about things they’re not sure of (I have family members like that). But they owned up to it fully. And during the actual podcast, they were glib about Mader, but I don’t think they were maliciously trying to put the blame on her – it seemed to me that they were just explaining that a mistake was made somewhere along the line, and even then they admitted they ultimately signed off on it. Just hope it doesn’t happen again.

The way Rebecca responded to it was just a bit over board. She could’ve just called them up and talked about and ended it there. But she decided to get some attention and be bratty about it. What she did was NOT COOL.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Well, I guess Damon & Darlton arent perfect like we thought.
I cant wait to see what they will say about the woman behind Sun.
Another D&D mistake???
March 24th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
why don’t we just all watch the show and enjoy it for what it is rather than try to pick out EVERY SINGLE DETAIL (which a ton of are unintentional) and stop being little whiny bi**ches about everything?
yeah i said it.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
‘d be pissed too! Rebecca has every right to be mad! Them saying that she just up and changed it on her own makes her look like a difficult, disrespecting actress, which is a big deal cause it damages her image to other sets or acting opportunities.
For such smart writers, thats pretty stupid to say. Think about it, they had to sit down, realize that they screwed up the story just a little bit, then decided that the BEST possible explanation is to say it was Rebecca’s fault….DUMB.
Also for those of you saying she went overboard, I’ve seen her on talk shows and behind the scenes stuff on set, and she really seems to genuinely like doing Lost. Then to have this happen straight from the creators….
NOT COOL.
March 24th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
to be honest i think rebecca is just bitter because she got killed off in the best season
March 24th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
The Hatch.
Although I agree about not nitpicking everything, Lost is a show about every single detail, minor or major.
Also, YOU’RE ON A WEBSITE THAT IS MADE TO COMMENT ON THOSE DETAILS DUMBA**!
So if you don’t like it, why don’t you go play somewhere else Bi**ch.
yeah i said it.

First of all I realize where I am. I’ve been surfing LOST pages for years now. Second of all, I wasn’t trying to be mean. It was supposed to be jokingly said so calm down. And third of all, I listen to EVERY podcast and read a ton of interviews. If you listen to what the producers and writers say and how they say it you would understand that they don’t put as much detail into the show as we all think they do. Yes there is much more detail than the average show but a lot of things are very unintentional and even they are very surprised by what sort of things fans pick from the show. Things that were never even intended to be dissected.
When I first read that there was a date discrepancy with Charlotte’s birthday and her being alive in 1974 I immediately came to the conclusion that it was a mistake on the writer’s part and blew it off right away because there is a much bigger story to tell that is not concerned with minor gaffs such as this one. I didn’t go wondering about whether or not it is a CLUE or draw some huge theory as to why Ben said 1979 and she is alive in 1974. I knew it was her right off the bat. It was so obvious that the writers intended us to know that was Charlotte. I’m simply saying sometimes we should just sit back and enjoy the show instead of letting minor mistakes (that will happen with a show so rich in plot) such as this eat away at our thoughts and time.

Didn’t Miles say almost everyone on the boat was lying about something?
March 24th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Maybe it’s just me…but everyone makes mistakes. Damon and Carlton admitted that the 1979 was an oversight. So why can’t we just let that go as a mistake?
Why does it HAVE to mean something and why do they HAVE to fix it? Seriously. Can we get a grip?
March 24th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
So they aren’t perfect. Who cares? They’re still producing an amazing show and have done an amazing job on it. With all this time crap going on, it is very easy for them to make a mistake. But seriously…can any of you remember a mistake they’ve made before?
Rebecca did go a little overboard on this one though.
March 24th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
HAHA, the point isn’t that they made a mistake, its that they blamed it on someone else!
“Who cares about them making a mistake” is right, but at least have the balls or brains to either admit to it at the beginning or tie it to the show, not blame it on the actress!
How is she going overboard? If someone blamed you for something you didn’t do in public without you being there to defend yourself, would you get pissed?
March 24th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
jajajaja loooool so much drama about this yeah this can be fixed but… i think that person behind Sun is a mistake since in my DVR is recorded the epi. and it was cut out..(Sun had more close up) but aparently the ones that are put on ABC.com are full frame and that person was someone from the team….. if in the next episode we see Sun, Christian and Lapidus alone as in no one was there… then BANG ANOTHER ERROR… or is my new LCD tv cropping the pictures
March 24th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I say.
A show so focused on numbers can’t screw one up so nonchalantly.
Doesn’t somebody get paid for that job?!?!?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
March 25th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
@ superk
Rebecca could have handled this in a more mature way. A personal phone call or email would have been a GREAT way to fix this problem, not going out in public and *itching about it.
March 25th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
@Brian
Thats funny, cause didn’t the writers say that it was Rebecca’s fault in public? Couldn’t they have called her or better yet left her out of it? Why would she need to give them a personal phone call, when they were the one’s lying and saying she was the cause of the mix up.
Just saying, you really can’t say that she should’ve handled it “better” if she is just defending herself from a problem that she shouldn’t not have been involved with the the first place.
ALSO, The writers would not have said anything if they didn’t get caught. Writer’s fault, not hers.
March 25th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
ok everybody, I think we should just calm down and think about it:
There was a mistake of Charlotte’s age said in 4×02 BUT it was never mentioned again in the show, so, it’s not that important. This mistake is from Damon, Carlton AND Gregg Nations because there was a lack of communication between them. I agree with everybody saying that Darlton should have not accused Rebecca, but they did it, that’s made and they apologized. That ends here! They are human, they’ll learn from that and make their best to not make this happen again.
For the consequences in the show, I think we just have to pretend that Ben said “1970″ and we’ll just sit and enjoy the show. I know that time and numbers are a REALLY important part of the show but we know it was a mistake from the producers! There’s no reason for them to “fix” this by changing the plot line.
That’s all I have to say.
