I don't think we'll be getting more explanation on what 'the light' is specifically. I'd love to be wrong though and get an actual explanation of what it is.
So we all thought the Man in Black was the ultimate evil… but it seemed to be the ghost of his dead mother that led him down his path.
So I guess the ruins of the well over the wheel led Dharma to dig it up and discover the shard of the 'light' that could be used to move the island… everything comes full circle.
Jacob kind of took a backseat in this one but i'm still convinced he's the good guy, despite his violence towards his brother and his acceptance of his mother's manipulations. He feels genuine guilt over what's happened, and for that I'm rooting for him, flaws and all.
The ending is rather difficult to figure out… now the MiB's spirit exists in the Smoke but I suppose from here on in he simply takes the form of his former body but doesnt actually inhabit it. That would fit with his statement to Alpert (“He took my body… my humanity”) and with his actions as appearing as Locke.
I can't wait to see how they tie this in to the sideways timeline… now that we have some lore to think about, that's what I want to see revealed next.

At first i was like this is not what i expected, but that is because i overhyped it on my mind i thought all my Jacob and MIB questions could possibly be solved. I liked the jacob and MIB story because it showed that they were just normal people with real issues like everyone else e.g. issues with their parent. It was interesting that MIB's mother told him he was special just as John Locke's mother told him he was special and part of a design. It seems the only truly special thing is the Island itself. I thought this episode was going to change my view on the mythology of the show and it did, but in a different way then i expected, which is refreshing.

Other thing is that is MIB who sounds like his mother (“they come, they fight, they corrupt, they destroy..”) and not Jacob, besides of his differences with her. Although it was him who lived with the men, and not Jacob.
Still a lot of answers to have: lighthouse, why MIB was special (how did he came up with the idea of getting of the island by turning a wheel!!??), and lots more..

Am i the only one who thinks that the mother was smoke too? She obviously couldn't destroy the well and kill all the people if she weren't..
Besides, she says Jacob that he'd be much worst than dead if he goes down the waterfall. She sounds like sorry..

The writers stated in their podcasts MIB is the evil one. At this point, with all the deaths he has caused I thought this was clear. I wouldn't look too into that wine scene.

I really do not understand why this “fake mother” had to kill the actual mother as soon as MIB was born. Didnt you guys notice the look of fright and nervousness on her face? What was up with that?
She obviously knew more than she showed but what exactly, we dont know. And as for her getting on the island we wont know and i guess that trend can continue forever because probably before her, there was someone guarding the light n keeps going….

Excuse me then, I'll rephrase that. Tonight's episode answered only two SIGNIFICANT questions, in my opinion. I had already guessed that Jacob & MIB were brothers, so that wasn't new for me. Don't know how many of YOUR questions got answered, but I do know the new episode raised more questions than it friggin' answered, and it shouldn't be doing that toward the end of the show. It's one thing not to answer all the EXISTING questions. It's quite another thing to raise NEW questions so close to the series finale.

So wait… The children who appeared to Smokey-Locke earlier in the season were in fact Jacob as a child and Jacob's Brother as a child… So How did they appear to him? Jacob's Brother is dead, and Hurley can see dead people so that makes sense, but didn't Sawyer see one of them? And Richard didnt I think… And how could kid Jacob appear unless Jacob is dead too… does Jacob himself go into the “Light” and die and become White Smoke or something???
Idk its too much.. I really want to rewatch those scenes where the children appeared to Smokey-Locke and others this season to try and make more sense of it. Anyone else on board with my train of thought here? Opinions or thoughts?

So “mother” destroy the wheel.
Who finished? Smokey? or the Others (Ricadus Team)?
And why dont smokey used the wheel to get out the island? Is it really necessary to kill all the candidates?
So Smokey is really “Brother” is just he dont need his body.
Where's Christian's body?
Where's this cave? Where's The heart of the island? Is in the Temple? That's why the water of the pool have healing benefits?
And that make me think about the Cerberus Chamber, remember? Who build the chamber? And why build such a place beneath the temple?
If they are not allowed or cant kill each other, why Son was able to kill Mother with a dagger?
Why a simple dagger have the power to kill?

Actually truconis has a point. I've listened to the podcast and I know what they said, but look at the entire series for what we know about Smokey. I'm sorry, but he has every reason to be angry and obsessed with getting off. He got screwed by his fake mom AND his brother. I'm still rooting for Smokey.

Very insightful episode in my opinion. Crazy mom kinda reminded me of Ben a bit.
-She took children that were not hers and raised them as her own (Ben taking Alex from Rousseau)
-Killing a whole village for the sake of the island (Ben killing of the Dharma folks)
-Being willing to kill “your” child or let it be killed(not sure if she tried to kill her son MIB jr. or just knock him out for a while)
It seems that to be a protector/leader of the island you do not have to be particularly Good, more like having faith to do absolutely ANYTHING for the island, no matter what it takes from or does to you. I also feel a bit bad for MIB his life has been written for him without his consent. Jacob is really his (fake) moms son, he will protect the island and find a replacement no matter how many lives it destroys in the end. Also, the reason I am not sure that crazy mom wanted to actually kill MIB is because she needed him to kill her, to relieve her of her duties to the island. Or maybe she couldn't kill him, but only knock him out long enough to not bother her while she kills and destroys his people. He was out for a good amount of time though to get all that done lol And how the heck did she do that anyway, how she close the well and burn and kill the villagers? Also, if Jacob had not thrown MiB into the “light” would he not have been able to leave? He would have had no further purpose on the island, Jacob got the big job and MIB took care of mommy dearest what else is there to do? So ultimatly, is Jacob to blame for MIB's imprisonment? If it wasn't for Jacobs action, all J would have to be worrying about was finding a replacement as protector, not bringing all these people to the island (before 815's crash) to show MIB how wrong he was about human nature.

So when Jacob throws his body in the water and it got sucked in
The Death / Darkness / Smoke was released because a dead body has entered it
So this means The Smoke Monster is just a sort of Ghost who is using body's to be in human form
The Smoke Monster is not MIB because MIB is dead
Although The Smoke is MIB because he was the 1st one the come in contact with it
Due that way The Smoke will act like MIB even using other body's but it still acts like MIB (because he was the 1st one to come in contact with it)
And when we see him in Season 5: The Incident & Season 6: Ab Aeterno
It's not the real MIB but a sort of Ghost because the real MIB is already dead but Jacob doesn't mind because he still acts like his brother

i dont think it was a terrible episode, by any means – but it should have been amazing, it really should have, and from having not been amazing might as well have been terrible. And it pretty much is terrible as a piece of the entire mythology. probably the first major misstep LOST has ever made and to do it this late in is a tragedy for the legacy it will leave – I genuinely think if 4, 5 and 6 were the quality of the first 3 series it would have gone down as classic television, whereas if the ending doesn't seriously pull it out (which i'm doubting after that episode) then it could be remembered alongside the Matrix sequels or Star Wars prequels.
i think for the first time I realise – and this is massively surprising for me – that LOST is stronger based around it's characters than its mythology. Pretty much all of my favourite stand-out moments so far have been based around the central characters motivation and emotions, though all I look forward to are the mythology bits.
what I really don't like, is that way back in series 1 the writers were saying “when we explain Adam & Eve, the audience will know for certain we haven't been making it up as we go along” which is not evident at all.
What is especially disappointing is that this was written by Lindelof & Cuse, who have provided the best episodes so far and seem massively in tune with fans expectations and thoughts – they know exactly what works and what doesnt, and they just totallly missed it on this.
It's still the best tv show ever made, but my faith has been severely rocked

Why can't MIB change his appearance anymore? Or did Ilana talk bullsh*t?
Now we know where Jacob came from…Where did the step mother come from?
Interesting episode….. but was it soo revealing? Nah. Not surprised that DL and CC needed another 30 mins for the final if they used a full episode for this history lesson.

Hummm i dont see how many people rated this ep above 7 let alone 10 – perfect! I bigged this episode up myself a bit too much i think, but i dont really see why we couldnt have had this episode mid season? It seems to have slowed the momentum up and didnt really give us anything breath taking. Saying that it was interesting seeing smokey born, although i did cringe a bit when i first saw the magical light stone. Also when kid Jacob and Boy In Black were fighting it was very poorly done if u watch it back you'll see what i mean.
I guess i shouldnt have hoped it would be on the same lines as Ab Aterno.

No offence but everyone claiming this episode has not given enough answers simply didn't watch the episode attantively enough of fails to understand LOST in its tradition: The BIG BIG answers lie not in what we saw but actually in what we did NOT see:
Did anyone think about the origins of their mother? She said she came to the island by accident (like their real mother!). But in this episode she is the protector of the island and its light. But if she was human once: Why did she get to the island? Who brought her there? What probably happened is that someoen brought her there and died, making her the new protector. Now in this episode she died too making Jacob the protector. Why did he have a list of candidates? Becaus ehe knew he would die too and he would need a follower (probably Jack). Can you see what is implied here? This is an ongoing, never-endling story. The island always needs a protector and they change again and again over the course of the centuries.
They mother beautufully said: Every question I answer will lead to another question. This is why it does not make any sense in thinking too much about where their (fake) mother came from. Because this would never end.
Concerning the light: We fiannly got a MASSIVE, HUGE answer: This island keeps the darkness, death, trapped. Jacobs brither died. He is one of the skeletons in the cave. What came out of the light was NOT his brother but the darkness that is supposed to stay on the island. Now it makes sense why Smoky in the form of John Locke said: Don't tell me what I cant do. The smokemonster is an entity, however, it cannot really control itself, when being in the form of a specific human being. He takes over certain aspects of the dead individual.
This was one of the most fascinating episodes ever! Can't believe they showed us so much in only 45 minutes! So many answers were given, especally who Adam and Eve were. So much to “they are making it up while writing”. They knew from the very beginning where this is leading. How amazing is that!
I admit a couple of weeks ago I was disappointed and did not believe they would actually answer all the important questions. Now, however, I'm a bit like Jack: I found my belief again, my spirituality, my faith in LOST. LOST rocks! Can't wait for the last 2 episodes!

Well…
With the whole light thing, my take on that is that, that basically represented life, but when MIB fell in, being evil, he took over the .light, and changed it to darkness. So what was life is now death. How Jacobs mum explained it, was that if you went into the cave, it'd be worse than dying, because you'd actually BECOME death. And so MIB is actually dead, but he part of him still remains as the smoke monster/death. And so if Flocke leaves the island, basically, death leaves the island, and so everyone dies, even everyone across the sea. That's why he must stay on the island. I think there's other stuff I might've figured out, but I don't have time to write it, so bye

I would say the smoke monster is its own entity and that in order for it to walk and talk it must take a body. So whether it was John Locke or MIB it is still the smoke monster. It could be the devil. But no matter who it is I think that the smoke monster takes their mind and their experiences and that is what it knows. Remember the scene with Flocke and Kate where he is talking about his experiences- well maybe those were actually John Lockes experiences and he is just using them to convince her- like when he said I had a crazy mother- well John Locke had a crazy mother…..

I wonder how there can be people who call themselves fans of Lost and still spend the time complaining…
I find this episode very interesting. It raises some new questions, yes, but in return they gave us at least 5 SIGNIFICANT answers. (I don’t have to explain them to a true fan)
But there are those who lack imagination and they want everything easy and explained in detail.
I guess they have become “men of science”
I consider myself a man of faith and I don’t have to analyze everything to the extreme, to understand and enjoy this great series.
In any case I suggest this:
“Do not expect too much, so you’ll never be disappointed”
