  • This is the worst episode of the season yet. I think it's a total waste of time, they don't give us any revelations as i expected, considering they only had 9 episodes to finish, what where they thinking wasting one whole week with Sawyer's love story? All the episode is as trivial as the stupid ending, no surprises, nothing new. Ok so, Charles Widmore is on the island, we already knew that!... Ok, Smockey's mom was a crazy woman... that's doesn't tell me anything! The things end up the same as they ended the episode before, the story didn't make any advance, yeah yeah Sawyer is a very sad man and Claire wants to kill Kate... please tell me something i don't know. Plus there was a "sneak preview" that didn't happened, the one where Jake and the rest are talking about the candidates arround a fire, i saw that and i thought it was gonna be a revelating episode, i can't belive how wrong i was. Next episode looks promising, i hope they make it up for one of the biggest fails of the show
  • Dudes, i'm not complaining about the WHOLE revelations, all i'm saying is that in this episode ("Recon") nothing really happened, and i'm surprised of such a filler episode when they have no time to waste
  • Koosher
This is the kind of thing that really frustrates me. To be a fan of this show for such a long time and have this whiny kind of complaint... is just beyond me. And it also makes me sad. Maybe the best thing about the show is not knowing what the hell is going on and having these mind-boggling mysteries. For me it would be almost disappointing to have everything answered, kind of counter to the idea of the show. Sure, I want some answers. And I'm sure I'll be satisfied with whatever I get. Because what is the point of over-analyzing something until it is no longer enjoyable? And that is what will happen for a lot of people when we get some really big revelations in the end. People will just find some nit-picky problem with it.
  • Skip182
Dude, you can't have mind bending episodes every week, that's not what Lost is. The biggest complaint I've seen this year is "where are the answers?" I don't get that complaint. My two biggest questions were what is the monster and what are the numbers, and they've already answered them, yet people aren't satisfied. Sad.

    relaaaax! have some faith!

Just found this interview from back in Jan.

    Heres part of it..

Lindelof: When we did 14 hours [in Season 4, which was cut short by the writers strike], you kind of have to just do pure plot. And the character moments happen on the way to and from plot. But when you do 18 [hours], you can still have character-driven episodes, like “LaFleur” where not a lot happens, but you’re setting up important character dynamics that are going to affect what happens later. The detractors of these episodes call them "stall episodes," but for us they’re kind of the most rewarding ones to write.

I think the expectation that, because it’s the final season, that every single hour is going to have a major revelations and major plot moves is completely unrealistic.

Cuse: No, we will tell you right now, [in Season 6] we have “Par Avion, Part 2."

Lindelof: Right. [In a movie-trailer announcer voice] "You liked 'S.O.S.' Wait 'til you see 'S.O.S. 2.' This time Bernard's spelling it out!"

Cuse: "Stranger in a Strange Land, Parts 2, 3, and 4."

Lindelof: "Whatever Happened to Jack’s Kite."

Well, I think that th island is a fictional place in a mindgame that a psychic "plays" with his patient (Jack?) to solve some problems and mysteries in the patients subconciousness. All the characters are avatars that the patient met in his real life (Jack passes Sayid in the hospital in S06E07 etc.). The sideways in S06 are the real life of the island-characters.

There is always a strong power to protect one's past to avoid bad feelings or getting hurt by something. Jacob and his people protect the "holy temple" (in the patience's head) where the truth might be buried. But there are also feelings or thoughts that are trapped and want to break out and take control ... like Flocke? And there are also "ancient" parts of a personality that we all get from our parents ... like Richard Alpert?

In a human's mind time is not really existent. It is just like a constant stream of thoughts, images and patterns ... the time jumps? And some normal fantasy (non-real things) like polar-bears on a tropical island? Fears caused by something dark and non-physical ... like Smokey? An important "trapped" thought that explodes during a psychic session ... the H-bomb?

If one side ... maybe Jacob ... isn't protecting the temple anymore so the therapy works and the patient (Jack?) is able to find solutions to his problems. Maybe the conflict to his father? That might be the reason why his dead father appears on the island? And thoughts can always be "resurrected" and appear at places they normally aren't. :o)

And Jacob ... might be the psychic himself that stepped out of the story so that Jack can find the answer for himself? Maybe Jacob chose the avatars (roles of the other characters) for Jack's mindgame and Jack just chose their looks because he met the real people before?

We'll see. I'm pretty sure that something like this happens at the end. A surprising but possible ending for the show. Enjoy!

Wow... i may have heard variations of this theory, but the way you fleshed it out blew my mind.
Even if this doesn't turn out to be the way it goes... love the theory.
  • lostallday
there is not a chance in hell that you are right lol. remember that although we all have these insane theories, the producers of the show (darlton) actually have to be able to relay the theory to the audience. and this one is waaaaay too confusing, and barely even makes sense if you ask me. it will be something a lot more explainable, not that it will be easy to comprehend, as lost has always thrived on those "what the EFF!" moments, but I trust the producers will give us a pretty clean closing to the show. does that mean that I think they will answer a ton of questions? no, i dont, but I do think they will give us an ending which makes it clear to us that it is OVER, and that there is no more island and life is as "back to normal" as it could be (hence the island under water)
  • JohnnyLes
I'm with lostallday on this one. I think your idea is creative, but would result in a complete cop-out "twist" at the end. This is EXACTLY why I hated that movie Shutter Island (and, it's actually kind of the same exact plot too). You can't spend all this time presenting what we're led to believe are facts, just to "reveal" at the end of the movie/show/series that all the information you've been spoon-fed is untrue.

Not to mention..... if Jack is the only avatar, let's say, how did other things happen in this "dream" where Jack wasn't involved at all?

Again....creative idea Marvin....I just disagree, and more importantly, hope you're totally wrong. Hah.
  • Marvin
Well, I already had this theory in Season 4 when Faraday started his measurings about time. I could not really believe that the producers who seem to read a lot of serious books would bring something like science fiction into this adventure story. And then the time jumps ... DL said something like "What is the island?" not "where" or something like this. And the human mind is a place where action and wonders happen all the time.

I just came from the cinema where I watched "Shutter Island" to understand what you mentioned. My original thought, nevertheless, came from the "6th sense" with Bruce Willis where the end twists quite surprising. Maybe it is not just one character in that psychic session ... maybe there are six of them (ok, sounds too crazy I know ...)?

Each character could be some part of a single personality. Thoughts interact without a direct dependence. But if you look at the whole structure they often do interact with each other. So why did Jacob just die and burn? He let it happen to step out of the game? Now he uses Hurley (the thought) to interact with the patient?

To be honest, I don't hope that I am right. But I am sure the ending will be something completely different than most of us expect (not to think about those intelligent but much too complex analysis' by Chris Kirkman). The producers also said that "There will be fans who won't like the ending at all". Most of us expect a spectacular action-like ending, I know. But if the island is revealed as a fictional place like "wonderland" so the story really ends and no one would like to continue a story where are no big secrets anymore. And that's what the producers wanted, right? ;o)

I think the flash-sideways are the real life of the characters. And we didn't see the mother of Jacks son yet. Maybe she es dead and Jack feels responsible for that. In combination to his trauma with his father there might be a systematic conflict in his subconciousness that hurts him. Or maybe there is a double twist and not Jack is the patient but Hurley or somebody else who just acts as a sidekick in the island-story?

    We'll see ...

    We'll see ...
  • JohnnyLes
    Interesting thoughts for sure....

We SHALL see. Not even much time left to theorize! That's the real let-down
    in this whole situation.

What the hell is Smokie?? He's a man, he had a mother, but he can turn into some kind of smoke that can grab things and pick up people and bash them to a pulp. This season in his various interactions with the Losties, Smokie is trying to connect with them by giving them some tidbits about his past. What kind of guy can turn to Smoke?
  • Kelly
Anyone else feel like this was an old school episode where we don't know who our enemies are but the 815-ers are full of their own drama?
  • adrian81
LEt's be realistic. I'm a school techer (English, History and Mathematics). A great thing fpr the perfect lesson is always to have a great introduction, some amazing picture that catches the student's attention. However, the thing with that is it starts to lose its 'magic' if you do that every single lesson. So a great lesson start can only happen once or at a maximum 2 times a week. In Lost it's the same thing. They cannot every week have a breath-taking LOST-svooosh end. ;-)

I found the episode insightful, maybe not the greatest episode so far, however, there were some things that were rather interesting:

Why did the watch show 8:42? Somehow the island magic seems still to be in the flash-sideways (why else would those characters all share so many connections?). Also Sawyer's 'magic word' LaFleur, why exactly did he choose that? Again a nice island-connection.

A highly symbolic moment was Sawyers smashing the mirror. The writers couldn't have made the connections between the two universes any clearer. But what was that scene supposed to tell us? Only one universe is going to survive?

Then of course Widmore. Really confusing. A couple of weeks ago I thought about Widmore being brought to the island by the smoke monster. Of course I was wring abot that theory. Mainly, because it was always Jacob bringing people to the island. The qustion here is what do all these people want? There is Widmore, there was / is Ben, Jacob and the smoke Monster. The main argument was on Rousseau's daughter. Jacob supposedly wanted her dead. Probably she was supposed to die anyway. That for Ben banished Charles Widmore. But why did Jacob let Ben get cancer? Did he know already that Ben would be the reason for his own death, becoming, in the future, his murderer? That would explain why Jacob hoped until the last moment of his life to be wrong about murderous Ben.

If charles Widmore wanted to execute Jacob's wish to have Alex killed, then maybe Ben was nver supposed to be the island's leader, and Widmore was supposed to be? IN that sense it would make a lot of sense why Widmore (in the nae of Jacob) tried to get Ben away from the island in order to contin ue Jacob's plans. In that sense Widmore would indeed not be the villain but in fact one of Jacob's people.

Also very catchy: What is in that double-locked door? Aaron maybe? Or some secret weapon that can actually kill Smoky? I'm sure this is going to be really important. Maybe Sawyer is going to try to steal the sub and will not be aware of te importance that lies in that secret chamber. I could even imagine their being on the way home when suddenly they discover what is in there and will be forced to turn back again?

One little disappointment: Wasn0t there a sneek peak where we saw Jack and Ilana on the beach at the fire, talking about who knows what to do next? I somehow missed that.

Even though this wasn0t the greates episodes, I still think the producers and writers are preparing the final battle, probably we will not really know what this is all about until the very two hours finale of LOST. Season 5 was similar. Until the finale it was mainly character stuff and some island specific narration. But on the main plot of LOST there wasn't too much, only new questions. But that's what LOST was always about. It would be a pitty in Season 6 to have some goofy answers for premature schoolkids, I still hope LOST is going to make it, to end and still not haveing answered al the questions. Otherwise it might be rather trivial...
  • JohnnyLes
There was definitely a sneak peek where we saw Jack and Ilana....i feel like we were gyped out of that one.

I generally agree with all the comments you made. But I think a lot of the frustration among the viewers is that we've spent ALL this time waffling over who is good and who is bad, that it's starting to become a waste of time/energy to even speculate anymore. I definitely feel that way.

Annnd, I'll also agree with your last point about not answering all the questions (I mean, they won't regardless of what I think anyway), but I will say that they have a LOT of pressure to perform next week. I may even go so far as to say the Story of Ricardus Alpert will make or break the entire series for me. This guy has been floating around for YEARS (on AND off the show) and we've taken his agelessness for granted, and just accepted it at face value. If they don't provide a compelling reason why.....I will keep watching.....but will feel let down.
  • adrian81
I totally agree. I think the Richard Alpert episode is going to be highly important for many LOST fans. I just remember an interview where Richard Alpert (well, the actor) said there would be going to be an episode where his background is revealed. I'm really curious. You know, what I really hope for LOST's end is simply something different from ALIAS. Don't know if you're familiar with it. That sereis was so fascinating, always leading to some great mythology-backstory. But then, the final episode was so horribly lame, not even bothering to answer ANY reasons fpr what happened and why it happened, who all those people were they introduced, I was so incredibly disappointed I just sold my whole ALIAS DVD box set! And I'm definitely not going to re-watch ALIAS ever again. That was one of the greates disappointments in TV-history.

However, in LOST, I'm still faithful, because Carlton Cuse said (still when they were shooting Season 1 or 2) that the skeletons in the cave is going to be their proof that they knew the main story from the very beginning. It's going to be the proof for their NOT making it up along the way. So if he wasn't lying there and actually was totally honest about that then I still hope they have a plan and will not disappoint us like ALIAS did....

Sawyer is one of my favourite characters and I always look forwards to his episodes. While this one was a little disappointing, it was still a good episode. The events in the sideways really saved this episode for me, for once I enjoyed found the flash sideways more interesting than the island storyline.

The sideways was great, I loved seeing Sawyer and Miles team up again, but perhaps he shouldn't even be called Sawyer in the sideways though because he never took on that identity. Ford being a cop is really believable because of the skill set match up between skilled law enforcement and smart criminals, shown with a nice quote by James "I got to a point in my life where I was either going to become a criminal or a cop." The cameo of Liam looking for Charlie was cool and the ending should make for a decent Kate in the future.

Sawyer's "Recon" story was the low point of the episode. While it was interesting to watch, it lacked the finesse and misdirection of Sawyer's previous cons. This one reminded me of Sawyer's best con, "The Long Con" his ploy to get the guns. In both of these cons he is playing two people against each other to serve his own needs, with the gun con usurped Jack and Locke masterfully, leaving them (and better yet the audience) completely shocked and dumbfounded. "You were all so busy worrying about each other you never even saw me coming did ya?" Perfection.

The set up for the con in this episode is disappointing to say the least, all of his deceptions were just face to face lies simply abusing their trust. There was none of the classic Sawyer misdirection, no ego prodding and none of that Sawyer charm and style. A bland con that made for an average episode, I just hope that the follow through of his deception improves. I miss the old Sawyer, he was my favourite character alongside old Locke.

The best part of the on island story was the Kate / Claire confrontation, Locke lifts Claire right off the ground and then slapping her into submission, that was rough. Sayid seems to be either apathetic or even nihilistic. This could either be the darkness taking hold or he could just be shell shocked like Sawyer was after he killed Cooper. I am really looking forward to the next episode, Richard is one of the most intriguing characters on the entire show and I hope his story lives up to its appeal.
  • luke
when locke visited kate in (the life and death of jeremy benthem) he said to her that everyone on the island would die if she didnt go back and she still said no, so she didnt really care about anyone else but herself so thats why she got what was coming to her, she didnt care about clare or anyone than. so what goes around comes around kate. lets face it kate is pretty selfish,
  • su
well, then the same should go to all the other oceanic 6 who said no to Locke in the first place. Then all of them decided to get on the ajira flight for different reasons (finding Jin, doing what they're supposed to do, hoping to get fixed, being dragged into it in handcuffs). At least Kate changed her mind and decided to go bring Claire back. Don't think the Lost characters are supposed to be heroes, it's just a lot of personal journeys.
  • mitchrw
There is too much wishy-washy stuff and continual questions without any concrete answers. I don't want more mysteries, I want information. I'm even starting to not care for the characters because there doesn't seem to be one specific character anymore, just different versions. I'm disappointed in this season, the beginning of this episode with cop sawyer was promising and then it just went down hill. Now all claire needed to fix her "craziness" was a slap from flocke? Where is desmond? come on now, they all (characters) are lost and this plot line feels lost. I'm just starting to drift away, the episodes are okay but not mind-blowingly great like other seasons. I don't like the flash sideways. This double story line is just pushing me away from caring for these characters. I think they should have stayed on one storyline. I started watching LOST faithfully in season 3 and I would say that this season has been the least satisfying so far. There are some good parts but with the double storyline it just doesn't seem whole. It is like 2 shows now. I'm tired of the mystery, "I want some frickin answers!" - Hurley "Numbers". The ending of RECON was poor. I don't understand why the writers would put sawyer and charlotte together when we know that charlotte and daniel are to be together and juliet and sawyer???? Why would I care for/want sawyer and charlotte together in the flash sideways when I know them being with different people? Clash of interest. i want people who were together on the island to be together in the flash sideways world, true love/fate to shine through. i just don't care about how there life would be if the plane didn't crash after being invested in them and their stories on island for so long.
  • I don't feel we can expect mysteries solved until the end of the final episode. I recall reading that D and L have the last 5 scenes planned from the very beginning. They probably can't give away revealing plot points without giving away the whole store.
At the end of every episode I am also left with the feeling of needing/wanting more. Mysteries are created by building suspense. Once the mystery is solved, the story is over.
LOST is certainly a show that requires a lot patience. Otherwise, there are sitcoms around that will wrap up their stories in 30 minutes. LOST: It's the journey, not the destination.

    (dif Mark)
  • mitchrw
It just doesn't seem as real with having this second storyline (flash sideways). The episodes are good with the suspense/mysteries but I find the flash sideways make the story less real/believable.
  • Skip182
Damon and Carlton said the Sideways World is 100 percent necessary for the conclusion of Lost, so instead of complaining, you might want to get on board or take off, because that's not gonna change.
  • mitchrw
Hopefully the end will satisfy and justify the means (these sideways episodes).
  • JohnnyLes
I TOTALLY felt the same way as you, and still kinda do. But, I've also started to consider the theory that mayyyybe the Flash Sideways is actually all of the 815ers "getting anything they want". Think about it:
    - Locke is with Helen, and on good terms with his father
    - Claire is having her baby in a hospital, and presumably raising him
    - Sayid is "with" Nadia
    - Ben fights the urge to gain power and influence to help "what really matters"...Alex
    - Jack is over his daddy issues by being a good father himself....or at least making strides in the right direction.
    - Hurley is the luckiest man alive

There's other examples too.... I don't know if this is the "answer" to the Flash Sideways, per se, but if you think about it in that context "What if this is actually everyone getting exactly what they want?"....then I think it helps to make the story more interesting.

But....100% agree.....give us some FRICKIN' ANSWERS!
  • luke
does sawyer, really think he can con the smoke monster but trying to steal the sub when he's back turned and my new favorite charecter is clare kate finally got what was coming to her in my opinion, oh and wouldnt it be great if smoke monster's mother ended up being someone we knew like one of the bodies in the caves.
  • Covenant
I think Sawyer's the one being conned. Smokie and Whidmore are on the same side. Once they run into each other they will likely embrace like old chums and Sawyer's jaw will drop.

I for one cannot believe that Jin is not running off to find Sun - it's seems completely out of character for him. They are really dragging the reunion out.
  • Kate finally got what was coming? For what? Not leaving a baby alone in the jungle and saving herself? The only thing I get tired of with Kate is her jumping back and forth between Jack and Sawyer. She may as well get over the both of them and shack up with Hurley, or even Miles. If she hadn't taken Aaron, someone else would have. Sun may have, then Claire would want to kill Sun, or the Others may have taken him and might have even harmed him. I agree with Kate for taking care of him, at least he's still alive, and he is with his actual grandmother now. I believe that she did return to find Claire and reunite her with Aaron. The only thing she is guilty of is not making up her mind when it comes to Jack and Sawyer.
  • crstang
If Sawyer is a cop, why would he have let Kate escape at the airport. He saw her in handcuffs
  • lmottab@gmail.com
maybe because he went to Australian secretly and didnt want anybody to find out, like Miles
  • Ben Isaac
I was puzzled by this at the start of the episode, but when it was revealed that his partner didn't know he went to Australia it made sense. Sawyer wouldn't have wanted to make the arrest because then he would have to file a report and Miles would know he had lied about his trip to Palm Springs. I like the idea that Sawyer also let Kate go because he got a sense of his affection for her from the other timeline.
  • Jarrod
Another good catch.. and a great question...
  • There could be a couple of reasons why. He may be a cop, but he's still Sawyer, the same Sawyer from Season 1, the same Sawyer who, as a cop, has every intention of killing Anthony Cooper. He may have felt attracted to her, he may not have had any jurisdiction (just a thought), or he just may flat out not give a damn.
  • turbocowboy
I think he didn't do anything cos maybe he wasn't supposed to be at LA X (remember he told Miles he was going to Palm Springs)
  • Jarrod
ooh nice catch.. didn't notice that.
yeah he would have been in undercover mode, not wanting anyone to know who he was.. and flashing his badge and taking kate down in the elevator would have been the fastest way to do that.
when he chases her down and he has her on the fence.. he is thinking... crap.. what do i do... this chick just smashed my car, but she knows that i was @ LAX etc... maybe.
  • MatiasCba
I liked the episode, but tell me something: wasn´t this the worst ending of all??
"We´re not taking the plane, freckles.. We´re taking the sub.." ....... LOST!!!

What the hell was that??!! Is it supposed to be an incredible revelation??..

    Lame..
  • hahaha totally agree, except i didn't like this episode
  • Tim_Thomason
Sawyer's gonna get mad when he realizes you also need to be professionally trained to drive a boat
  • John
So, the Smoke Monster has 'mommy issues'.
