You can definitely see a pattern: Jack and Ben, both on Jacob's side, have had redeeming moments in their flash-sideways while Sayid and Kate, both seemingly on MIB's side, haven't had that. It shows that the Island events carry over into the alt. reality, so everything we've seen thus far hasn't been for nothing. So does that mean that the alt. reality will be the prevailing one after the on-island war is over? Great stuff.

The best sideflash story so far! All that Ben-getting-rid-of-the-principal story was soooo like something we actually haven't seen – getting rid of Widmore and taking his place. In both cases Ben believed that he cared more about the island/the school and its people/stuff and students, and that he would be a better leader (and was even told so by the substitute Lock, and, probably, in the case of the island, by Richard). Even the looks and voice of the principal were similar to those of Widmore.

I feel that each time I watch one of the episodes of season 6 I belive they reached a peak not been reached so far and every week I again find myself wondering about the greatness of this humanistic, philosophical epic!
First of all a comment to those criticizing the show would not move forward fast enough: You probably failed in seeing the depth of this episode, the breath-taking emotional deepness and the awe-inspiring moments between our beloved characters, not to be forgotten the twists and turns and all of that in less that 45 minutes! Is the quality of this show really about how much the story progresses or isnt' it much more about closure on many of these characters?
What struck me most was without a doubt seeing two major character twists: Jack (so glad about that) finally found his way to the man of faith. Jacob was right, Jack staring at the ocean helped him realize that Jacob actually did observe him all of his life, maybe that was the answer Jack somewhat needed. There was after all a plan all along – which was what Jack could not or would not believe for so long. Wonderful irony that Jack actually convinced suicide-Richard. Jack's closing the eyes was also symbolic. It meant he does not longer rely on what he sees, on his surrounding, he gives up, he stops looking at the world, he lets happen what's supposed to happen. He placed himself under Jacob. I'm incredibly glad!
Second huge moment was without a doubt Ben's talking to Ilana. Although he said things we all knew already, that was – at least in my eyes – one of the deepest Ben moments I've seen so far, can't remember having heard Ben talk with such an emotive voice. And when he was almost crying, saying that he's going to John and she decided “I'll have you” – just wonderful, the Lost writers at their best!
Then of course the arch to the Flash-sideways. Ben in that reality is capable of doing what he couldn't do on the island. Giving in, seeing Alex as much more important than himself, placing her over himself.
This wonderful episode even had that moving, connecting moment at the end, where Ben helps Sun. It seemed as if the writers wamnted to show us practically that Ben has changed. He put the gun down and helped Sun. If this season in about redemption of some of the characters then probably Ben will no longer be the Ben that we knew. He will probably held team Jacob until the end. This last scene with Ben even hinten (in my eyes) to Bens death – he know will even be ready to die or to do whatever it takes in order to redeem himself for his sins.
Another thought about the smoke monster. When John said he's looming for someone to take over the island: What if John is doing the precise same thing as Jacob is doing? Looking for someone else to take over? remember when Smoky said to Sawyer he was a man once? Well, what if being Smoky is like a curse? And only the death of “Jacob” is a way of freeing yourself, but that is only possible if the curse is given to someone else – meaning that Smoky's soul will be free but another soul will have to change into the form if the island's smokemonster? That might be Ben's part in the finale? And at the same time Jack or one of the other candidates will take over Jacob's post?
Anyway, that was again the hell of an episode! Whoever has the feeling it was not enough or not moving enough fast ha probably never understood LOST. Because this episode was more what LOST actually is than almost every episode so far. The flash-sideways are so incredibly fresh, so new, they don't actually only tell new storys but they give the audience the possibility to experience our beloved characters in a totally new, different light which is absolutely amazing! Lost still rocks! Looking forward for the next episode, in which we will probably see more of new-Jack, the man of faith!

What is so amazing about this show is that it actually throws so much stuff at the audience that you actually need one full week to understand what was going on. It's never again going to be the same if you buy the full LOST DVD box set and just watch the whole show in 2 weeks. You can do that, of course, but it will take all depth of the show away. One of the reasons I will be so sad when LOST is over: My thinking so hard about great mysteries and huge character development, about emotional moments will be over for a very, very long time… SO if you do like LOST, john, you should also invest a bit in it and read a longer post sometimes…

Yeah definitely more of a set up episode, one of those we will look back on later in the season and say… oh yeah! Haha Michael Emerson was awesome as always and took me along for the ride all the way to the point where he decided to forgo is plans of being principal in order to give Alex the recommendation. I really had no clue which way he would go (especially when he took the name plaque of the desk). Did you catch that Ben and Uncle Rico, I mean, his dad were on the island as before? How did they get off? Good Stuff. Only Complaint: no Danielle =( would have been cool to see her happy too.

I'm with Indra. What good is it to read “great show” or “I hated it” when there's nothing to back it up? I loved reading Adrian's thoughts. Upon seeing that someone took the time to write out a long comment, I thought, 'Oh good! Something to read!”

Loved the episode. Not as good as last week's, though.
Anyway, ALT Timeline's still not working for me. I understand the parallels and redemption values it adds but… Island stuff is way better.

When I watched Ben's scene with Illana…his absolute broken honesty (maybe for the first time since childhood) and his loss and confusion several things occurred to me at once: 1) By saying she'd take him, Illana conferred a state of GRACE upon the former Uber Other. In essence, she reclaimed his soul for good. And unlike Sayid when offered redemption, Ben chose to take it and to abandon his power. 2) I think Illana will become the new Jacob – her threat to Ben and having him dig his own grave were her attempt to draw out FLocke and to see where Ben would ultimately side.

I almost agreee with everything you say. That's true, now that you wrote that I also realised it. I guess you hit it! This is actually the first time since season 2 that we saw Ben without his mask, we saw actual Ben as he really and truly is, like when he was a boy, the writers granted us acces to the innermost part of Ben without any limits.
Where I disagree: I just don't think Ilana is going to be the new Jacob, since she said herself there are only 6 candidates left. Furthermore she doesn't know who to protect, Sun or Jin, that means when Jacob asked her in hospital if she'd help him again, he probably meant helping him by protecting the candidates. That would mean her role is not so much of a candidate herself (she's not on the list anywhere) but as protector of those.

Just watched the Ben scene again. I just felt that at fist he was confused and puzzled after Ilana said “I'll have you”, he looked at her absolutely stunned, not understanding why she just said that, and then followed her. Could it be that some part of him in that moment saw something like a mother-figure in Ilana? Ben never had a mother, so he had psychologically never a strong relationship to a woman (which might also explain his weird pseudo-relationships, if he had any real ones at all…). I'm still convinced this will mean Ben's death, should he encounter Smoke Monster one more time, he might be killed by UnLocke, or as I claimed already in another post, he will be the new Smoke Monster. I'm sure Smoky once was a man and was trapped into the role of the Smoke Monster. Probably some thousand years ago the former Smoky wanted to get rid of his “Job” and took over Man in Black's body, and he had to be Smoky ever since. Now he's looking for another poor guy to which he can pass on the curse.

I guess the writers are entangled in their own web… And this is not their first time. A lot more of this kind of misfit details are present throughout the show, especially from season 4 onwards. But, what can you expect? They set the standards so high, it was unavoidable for these oversights to happen…

Another EMMY for Michael Emerson PLEASE, he's probably the best actor of lost, I would need to think that a lil bit more anyway.
Cool episode really, I just was expecting a little more of the encounter of Jack and Hurley with RRRRicadus.
, It has been a long time since he last appeared
And I hope we get some Sawyer the next episode

like jLatino was saying, I turned to my friends I was watching the episode with when it went to commercial after Ben was presented with his choice to take power in the form of principal or choose to be giving and let Alex's future remain intact and said “Wow I have absolutely no idea which he will choose… that's why LOST is the best show on TV.”
Only complaint about the episode is from the looks of things we may not get an answer on who Ben's childhood friend Annie is… I remember hearing she was “One of the two most important women in his life” and the other was Alex. So maybe we will still find out but it seems to me they may have forgotten her.
Overall though a fantastic episode. Ben has been my favorite character since he became a regular. Michael Emerson is brilliant and deserves another Emmy.

I just had a random thought not necessarily related to this episode, but…. did the Temple others grab Christian Shephard out of the coffin and take him to be healed in the pool? Thoughts anyone?

I feel a bit annoyed that we are 7 episodes in and we haven't been given many answers. I understand they are saving them, but I'm starting to feel like they might never come. If they don't make the end satisfying it will have been such a waste of an amazing show. But it will only be amazing if it answers the big questions- without those, its just a load of people going round in groups to various places because they will “be safe there” or they have some unexplained thing to do. I'm enjoying the episodes but its just things like- what are the others hanging about for? What is their purpose? What is Ilana and co's purpose? Just seems a bit like everyone's randomly milling about the island, sitting around waiting for something unknown. I'm still loving the season but, after that reason Michael Emerson interview it sounds like 3 episodes before the end: they stil haven't given any meaning to anything. So frustrating!

I just felt like Michael Emerson was saying he doesn't know what the endgame is. I find this very exciting. True to the Lost we know and love, we will be kept in the dark up until the very end.
I am satisfied with the answers we are getting. Someone mentioned Miles getting the diamonds kind of completes his arc. Ben's redemption had a very satisfying quality to it, although i'm sure there's a lot more to come from him. It will be over soon and I intend to enjoy it and savor it while it lasts.

Then either you are very confused or you're not as fan as you think, because this character episode was solid and emotional. Lost is all about redemption and this episode is all about redemption. If you don't get that maybe you have to watch the series again.
