I think this first Act has had a strong weakness: the ALT timeline isn't engaging enough. And I understand its implications, but it will not have real meaning until we get some explaining about its nature… As of now, it's just not working.
Besides, I hate that Jack's still in his depressed weeping phase at the end of this act. He should've been already redeemed and built up. I hope Jack “The Hero” comes back soon, or this is going to be a character borefest -like season 5-.

I do agree about the pacing in the flash-sideways. As fun as it's been to see these characters in a new light, we haven't really had all the dots connected for us yet as to what the other timeline has to do with the story. I'm going to bet that we will see an episode at some point this season, probably at the end of act 2, that will be set entirely in the LA X timeline wherein we'll learn why Jack's neck was bleeding on the plane and why they all seem to experience some kind of deja vu when they see one another. I think in the meantime they will to continue to move the on-island plot forward and use the flash-sideways for giving us little hints of LA X mythology and huge helpings of really cool and/or redemptive character moments.
And how do you guys feel about the promo for the next episode? Kinda bold, right? They announced in the promo that a specific character would meet his or her demise. I may be biased because the character is my absolute favorite character on the show, but they really need to deliver with this one.
Also, it's been way too long since we've seen Desmond & Penny.
Keamy's appearance was a fun surprise and reminded us about Widmore and what he might be up to right now in either of the timelines. I'd like to hope that they're going to fold in little surprise guest appearances like this all season. I'd love to see Juliet (and Rachel), Libby, Alex, and Friendly at least one more time before the show's over.
Bottom line. It's everything I wanted it to be and more, but it still needs to do a lot more to satisfy. I think we'll all be better judges of Act 1 after we've seen the series finale and can go back and see how the pieces were falling into place. Until then, I'm enjoying the ride.

I've really enjoyed this season so far; I'll admit I still don't know the connection with the could-have-been flash sideways but I'm still able to enjoy them anyway. Sundown really raised the bar for action, I bet we'll be seeing more intensity in the episodes. Because I can't really rant about about everything, here's the stuff I liked:

Ben: Everything about the man. I'm thinking he'll redeem himself.
Jack and his son: Everything comes full circle. But I'm feeling like Jack will realize through his interactions with David that Christian wasn't the man Jack thought he was. Simply by telling David how he cares about him proves that, as Jacob believes, progress is possible.
Dogen: I liked his backstory and what it reveals about Jacob's (or was it the Man in Black?) bargains.
The last 10 minutes of Sundown: The death of Dogen and Lennon, the attack, and Ilana's crew busting in to save who they can. I feel like Ilana, along with Richard, will be sharing a lot of mythologoy. But nothing can beat the last scene, with Once-Locke gathering is army, thunder and “Catch a Falling Star” ringing in the background.

I agree with most comments.
I've been a huge fan of the show since Season 1, but I've been feeling more and more disconnected with the characters as the show moved on, especially since Season 5, and now it's even worse. I think that the LOST fans have created a myth around the writers, especially Darlton, and Darlton embrace it because they do so many interviews and stuff (much more than any other showrunners I know), but I think it doesn't serve them well. They are already finding excuses for themselves (not everybody will like the finale, we don't have time to answer all the questions) in a way that is kind of lame and weak. I think that, in reality, they are amazing “big picture” writers, with great ideas for a great story, but that they are extremely weak about the details of their show. They clearly don't have the skills to pull off certain things that were necessary to the show (how to make their characters talk about the island and what's going on in a natural and not boring way, how to create stakes in relationships that are not clichés, how to make characters be part of the show without just making them show up in the middle of the jungle, and not seeing some of them for 4 episodes).
LOST is lucky to have its specific fans, who actually answer many questions by making up theories and what not that, I'm certain of it now, are much more complex than what writers actually had in mind. I was just surprised the first few times that Darlton admitted they'd just made a mistake in a podcast, especially considering that fans had been theorizing about it for hours, because the myth was that “in LOST, everything is done on purpse”. Yeah sure, not we see more of it, and I dare a fan who thinks everything is under control to watch it all over again and tell me that what characters do and say always make sense to the story. Think Others, just a thought.
Dialogues, relationships, coherence, it all seems less and less realistic and when they say that their show is about their characters and not the mythology, well I think it's too bad because in that category there are so many shows much better than theirs, especially on cable. They can't even compare, so why trying to make the show something it's not?
The greatness of LOST is its mythology, and so far in Season 6 it looks like they won't deliver the way we could have hoped back in Season 2 for instance. The show was so much more exciting when it still had this charm, the island, the beach, the hatch… just because it seemed more or less real. Now, anything can happen because we are so deep into the nonsense that there's no way to explain, even in sci-fi, that the surprises never work so well anymore… we expect zombies, resurrections, monsters and what not.
Also, I'd say that the flash-sideways are a huge mistake. Darlton think that their twist explaining the link will make it worth it, but they clearly underestimate the expectations people have for this season, which involves a lot of impatience. They might give a great answer about those flashes in episode 13 or 14, but it doesn't change the fact that in the meantime, we don't feel connected, we don't believe in them, and we get bored.
Finally, I think that the pacing issue is really an issue, because in my opinion the biggest mistake writers ever made was to undererstimade the tension they were creating by bringing up so many questions. Now they don't answer most of them, that's pretty clear by now, or they keep it for the very end, but if you wait for too long, viewers just don't even want to know anymore and are just annoyed. It's like it's rotting or something. And in terms of that, they should have replaced old questions with new questions, but giving answers at the same time so we move on and keep feeling concerned by the show. Right now it feels like the writers have a thrill in the writing room everyday but much more than what viewers experience… which is not the way good writing should be conducted, in my mind.
All in all, I think LOST had a huge potential, but that the writers kind of followed the path of some of the writers they love themselves, feeling very confident in what they do because of their huge success, and that they didn't question their initial intentions enough. As a fan, I look at the show and consider it exciting but full of weaknesses and flaws, in a way that really bothers me and sometimes makes me cringe. I am just disappointed.

I am really enjoying this season, and while I understand that every episode isn't going to be MASSIVE, I feel like too much time has been wasted on stupid scenes that mean nothing (Locke's interview with that weird lady, Kate getting her handcuffs off, etc) Granted, these are extremely short scenes, but I feel like they could easily inject so much more life into these episodes by either running into more random characters (Nikki, Paulo (yes, I said it) Friendly) or further developing the new ones (Dogen and the temple folk in general)
LA X and Sundown were superb in my opinion – LA X probably being one of my favorite episodes ever. Looking back at two other fantastic episodes like The Lighthouse and The Substitute – they feel like they just plodded along too much. And I am not one of those expecting answers – I still love being in the dark about everything and I am in LOVE with this season. I just think that they could be making S6 a lot more fun, developed and EPIC than it has been.

Talking about on-island, I feel like there's been too much mythology and not enough character's arcs, they are exactly the same than in episode one, with the exception of Sayid.

I think everyone needs to stop worrying so much about getting answers. We have already gotten ALOT of them, and I personally don't want them all at once. No, they won't answer everything, but it's the ride to get to the answers that all of us have always enjoyed on Lost. I think this season has been beyond excellent so far. Each episode has been extremely fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way through. I'm not sure the connection between the flash sidways and on Island, but that doesn't make the flashes any less interesting… Overall– Wonderful, Amazing, LOVE it…. I can't wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.

I want to hear what everyones comment is on the fact that the ash didn't keep smokey out of the temple but according to lennon Dogen kept him out of the temple? What do you guys thinks up with that? Thats been bugging me ever since I saw it last week.

You gotta understand that everything that's happened on the island since “316″ has taken place in one week. After such a crazy tragic week how could Jack not still be depressed??

All of the complaints about answers, pace, character transformation and the alt timeline seem to stem from the frustration of only getting one episode at a time. Each season is like a book, but because we have to wait a week for each chapter, people seem to have a warped perception of the pace of the story. It seems like many of you are expecting six weeks worth of story development from the first 6 episodes and are losing sight of the fact that the events in the story have taken place over the course of only 2 days. And complaining about not getting many answers by the end of the first act is just ridiculous. Did anybody expect the entire Harry Potter saga to be resolved in the first 200 pages of book 7?

I have the feeling that it is going to be really badass because it will probably explain everything from it's origins

As much as it bothers me that there are comments here whereby peoples expectations exceed the reality and scope of the show, i don't want to talk about that. What i DO want to alert all of you too,however, is of a a very particular frame of interest during “Sundown”. I'm suprised there has been no threads about it yet, i guess everyone was just to caught up in the action but none the less, i want everyone to examine the scene where Kate grabs hold of the ladder in the hole when flock enters the room. More specifically ( If you watch it through windows media player and the timebar is linear –would really help) 37:59. Hit pause and look at the strange figure/ghost inside the smoke. I caught this the first time round but forgot to re-check what it was when i seen it. It's clearly something inside the smoke because as it passes, it makes a scream. I vote for HD screencaps of this ghost,camp!
If you, like some of my friends, play the episode on different video players and the timing given is different then make sure your pausing it at the moment when the camera is angled upwards at claire and the smoke passing it. Fairly interesting

The first act was wonderful. There were things I didn't like but I expected that.
Locke or fake Locke as some say is awesome. The end of Sundown kind of hinted that Kate was going to be on his side with Claire and Sayid which I don't like. Kate has just really gone down as a character for me. She never listens and always nags people and think she has to be involved in everything
I'm personally sittin here waiting for Desmond! And more Richard.

I agree 100% with Arti's comment.
I'm really having trouble with this season so far. I thought that last's year finale was so intense and so full of possibilities that maybe my minds got caught into theorizing too much for too long
Saying that, it is quite clear that a lot of key questions will never be answered, and it's kinda a frustrating feeling to have.
I thought “Sundown” was a bit more interesting than the rest of the season, but the series still needs to get a better pacing, imo, it's just a bit boring at the moment.
Now to be entirely fair, I'm also sure that we will gain another perspective while the series is over. This season may seem slow and boring at times, but then some episodes in previous seasons were'nt exactly masterpieces either, there has been fillers.
What is the most frustrating is that we know the end is near, so it's like any “wasted” minute on the show right now is leading us closer to the end, expectations are really really high.

I do see perhaps a human form.
My guess is that it's one of the doomed temple others, but i'd love to see an HD screencap too.

yea i saw that and played around with it too. no idea, maybe its similar to the things that flashed in the smoke back in season 3 when it stared down Mr Ekko… on that note, whats up with the smoke monster looking 10 times better in season 3. damn budget cuts? seriously, i feel a little shamed watching meh CGI smoke monster as opposed to tikka tikka stairs down Mr Ekko, tar black smoke monster.

I still defend my theory that this smokey is not the same one as in the previous seasons.
However, this theory is based only on it's color.
But seriously, low budget? LOST? mmmmm…

There is a nice theory that they were shooting themselves with all the timeloop thing going on.
If you look closer at the scene, it seems plausible.

That's the problem, you're analyzing the plot in realistic ways, while my opinion was based on script-writing techniques. Jack should enter a new phase, that's obvious, and he needs a wake up call, a turning point to do so. In script-writing, that can happen in a second, you just need a game-changing event. The fact is the writers have already presented that event –the mirror incident in Lighthouse– but we didn't have enough time to see its effect on Jack's character. IMO, they waited too long. Jack's nadir and rising again should've been earlier in the season.
