LOST Episode 6.06: Showdown at Sundown

Season 6, Videos View Comments

I absolutely loved the final sequence:

Here’s an excerpt from an interesting review of “Sundown” by LA Times‘ Todd VanDerWerff:

Sometimes you watch “Lost” and think about the philosophical conundrums it presents or the way the characters interact. Sometimes you watch it and come away impressed by the show’s rock-solid direction or great acting. But sometimes, oh, sometimes, you watch the show and end up feeling that there’s just nothing else like it on TV, nothing quite so, well … awesome. When “Lost” is on, there’s nothing quite like it for bringing big, epic moments, and there’s never really been anything like it in the history of the medium. It’s a big, bold show when it wants to be, and when it pays off a whole bunch of setup with a big, action payoff, it usually delivers.

A good case in point is “Sundown,” which starts out as sort of a philosophical treatise on whether man is inherently good or evil and then becomes one of the most ridiculously fun-to-watch action sequences the show has ever turned out. For its final 10 minutes or so, “Lost” unveils the television equivalent of an Indiana Jones movie or the battle at Helm’s Deep in the “Lord of the Rings” series. [...] Those final moments — of Sayid emerging from the Temple’s inner sanctum to see the havoc that he had helped wreak, “Catch a Falling Star” strumming away on the soundtrack — were both downright eerie and somehow poignant.

Wow... What a Great episode! One thing that has been missing for a while is Sayid kicking some ass, he always gets the best fight scenes!

    On the Island
I thought it was a shame that Sayid is being himself, a killer... I also really liked Dogen and am hoping that both he and the translator will come back to life in.. oh, lets take a guess of about 2 hours! My hope is that Jacob had something to do with the water becoming dark and not having it's usual healing power but that there may still be some healing power left yet! (You can always hope) Didn't seem a fair fight considering that Dogen won the fight and yet let Sayid live! That scene before the lost logo was the best fight scene for a long time!!!!!!!

    During the flash sideways
I did however love that Sayid tried to stay out of things regarding his brother and listened to Nadia and went home to look after her children! I also loved that when forced into a corner he killed Keamy in self defence and in beautiful Sayid style!
I'm also hoping that even though Jin can't speak English in the flash sideways he will at least set him free regardless!

  • I love the thunder sound cue al the end. I've watched the scene 10 times and never noticed it until now.

I don't know what Kate is going to do.
You see, that face in the end made us think that see didn't really expect to find Flocke out there.
But then, why the hell did she pick up that rifle?
If Kate's only goal was to get Claire home, then she must follow Flocke

Also, I wonder if Jin went darkside too...
  • Good catch on the rifle, Facu, it caught my eye too. Why would they include her picking it up in the middle of the cool slo-mo montage if it wasn't that important?

I think it's a Chekhov's Gun plot device (search it up).
  • Woongo
Shivers down my spine yet again...

jin in a closet wonder how he got there, kate wanted so desperatly to find clare, she even returned to the island to do so it's going to be sad when clare kills her for this. i hope sayid is just pretending to be on team flock and plans to kill him but thats unlikely. oh and glad to see miles doesnt call sawyer, (lafleur)
    anymore that was getting annoying.
  • Ian Smyth
Interesting the way UnLocke looks at Kate at the end, like he's judging her. Realzing she's a candidate and can take his place.
  • Skip182
He's looking at her like that because he knows she f's up everybody's life she comes into. She also f's up episodes she comes into. Bazinga!
  • david464
kate is not (or no longer) a candidate, i thought there were only 6 of them left (jack, sayid, sawyer, hurley and the two kwon's)
  • JohnnyLes
She wasn't crossed out on the lighthouse dial. But, if we're to assume that the lighthouse was "jacob's list", he may have died before he had time to update it?
  • Carlton Cuse confirmed in a recent interview that Austen was supposed to appear in the cave's wall, and that her name was crossed out.

    Two different lists?
  • JohnnyLes
Yeah, there was a "running tally" or list in the cave, and then another "running tally"/list in the lighthouse. Austen was not crossed off in the Lighthouse, but was in the cave.
  • Hmmm... I don't think he's judging her, he's just thinking "What the f is she doing here?? She's trouble..."
  • vahag
THE BEST EPISODE in its type!
  • vahag
Adrian 81. You must understand that even if Jack killed Sayid or even if he chose to stay, IT DOESNT MATTER, Dogan would still die, and everything would happen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • ben lyin-2-us
This is how i feel the show is going to continue. Based on what Jacob said, Jack would be the one to try stopping people including (new) Lock from leaving the island. Doing that would make a great irony.
  • adrian81
I can't help myself but I get quite angry about foolish Jack. Whose fault is it that the Losties left the island? Whose fault is it that (as a consequence of this) John Locke died? Now who's fault is it that Sayid is still alive? Who was not willing to redeem himself even though he was given the chance to do so? Who's fault is it that the "new people" that are coming to the island will not find it for some longer than necessary? Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack, Jack. There's so much blood on his hands that he will never again be able to get rid of it.

Jack simply lacks faith. He was no believer and he still is no believer now. I really hope he changes as soon as possible and lets his man of science behaviour behind him, because there does not seem to be an great amount of time left...

I keep watching this scene over and over again. And again. This is Lost at its best.
  • Badass scene WIN.

You just can't praise Bobby Roth (director), and Graham Roland / Paul Zbyszewski (writers) enough for this fantastic, meaningful and damn FUN episode.
  • Good news: Bobby Roth also directed next week's episode!
  • My neighbours sure heard my HURRAY after I read your comment ^_^'

I mean, just re-watch the fight scenes, Keamey in the kitchen, the Sayid/Dogen talk, the final slo-mo scene... Bobby Roth knows what he does!
  • It looks like IMDB is messing with us. Next week's episode was directed by Mario Van Peebles, not Bobby Roth.
