The upshot of all this is that Lost is employing something akin to the Terminator-style model of time travel (and I’m referencing only the first Terminator movie here). The idea is that if you go back in time and take part in events, the outcome of whatever you do is already evident in the timeline at the present. (This is very different from the Back to the Future take on time travel, in which one can change past events and create new timelines. If BTTF had employed Terminator-style time travel, there would have been no danger to Marty, as his presence in 1955 would have always been part of his parents’ history, even at the start of the film.)

Does it really make sense that a manipulation of the flow of time would occur during the natural flow of time? I’m thinking that maybe the “incident” was time travel – which would theoretically destroy the universe instantly. At least traveling into the past, anyway. An object can travel into the future repercussion-free just by going super kicky fast. (As long as you don’t count everyone you love being dead a repercussion.) Perhaps Jacob/The island is rounding up the necessary posse to stop the DI from going back in time in the first place. Of course, that would mean that the time line following the incident is an alternate one, a cosmic back up plan. Which would mean that time travel was a factor all along. Geez. Am I just over thinking this or did I just get it?

It all makes perfect sense to me although you’re starting to make me question my understanding of it all. The way I see it is that I don’t think any manipulation of the flow of time occured at all, they were always in the past its just the matter of how they got there that is quite unnatural. It was explained in the show that you can go forward in time and back in time but if you try and disrupt events, the same outcome will happen every time, you can’t warp or manipulate timelines and you can’t create new ones. The losties can’t change events in time in the past because they had already happened by 2004/5, for example if the losties found jughead and tried to activate it, it wouldn’t work because we already know that the island is still there in 2004/5 I’m not really sure about the incident being time travel though I suppose we’ll find out by the end of the series although if it did have something to do with time travel I don’t think it would be the actual travelling that would be described as the incident, rather the nosebleeds and side effects suffered from being unstuck in time.
