Jack has major daddy issues, so now not only is his sister still on the Island but so is his father. He probably feels like a scumbag thinking he's abandonded both of them to the place. He wants to make amends and so he tries and tries to get back. You have to realize that his suicide attempt comes after I think months of him trying to get back. He was losing hope of getting back. Also John said it himself, he only had to convince one of them, he didn't need to convince the others. Someone or something convinced the rest.
