Holy crap what a episode, young charles widmore the bomb locke and richard desmond named his son charlie and next week episode looks amazing. My mind is blown one of my fav episodes.
January 28th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
WOW This episode was perfect. So many things to think about: Widmore being an other on the island in the 50′s, Richard’s reason for visiting Locke when he was born, the similarity of Rousseau and the girl, Jacob being on the island a long time, Desmond naming his boy Charley, and looking at the preview for the next episode…i think the next episode will be the best yet! Get too see some older stuff return and hopefully explain some mysteries from past seasons..
January 28th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
damn.
lol) [oh jello, dont think too much about that girl being rousseau. I highly doubt that she has anything to do with her]
That was a great episode. I’m glad Desmond said “f*that” and went strait to see Charles Widmore without really thinking twice about it. And to see Widmore as an “other” on the island blew my mind. Can’t wait to see what happens next week. (wish i had a dvr so i can watch the episode again. im so poor
January 28th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
that was not as amazing as reviews said but it had a lot of charm
I LOVED juliet speaking latin and saying ‘lets all put our guns down’
one very annoying question: I heard someone say they were happy to get to see two season 1 characters in this. I assumed it meant exclusively season 1 chracters that havent been seen again, but maybe they meant Locke and Sawyer..? Anyone else hear this/can explain it?
January 28th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I’m prob in a minority but I liked this episode better than either of the first two. things are starting to come together and a lot was revealed in this episode. not to mention des and penny had a son and his name is charlie. so cute!
AND THANK GOD!!—they left out the Oceanic 6 for an episode. Get to the interesting stuff thats going on with the stranded. With this time shifting thing the writers have free rain to visit ANY part of the islands history. I want more lost mythology!
January 28th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
oh and dont you think the bomb will probably explode something in the season finale? and will prob leave that crater we always see in maps for the island…
January 28th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
ya im thinking the bomb will be for something big…and we didnt find out what happened to the rest of the losties like rose and bernard after the others attacked them because they didnt go to the creek.
January 28th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Bomb has to have lead to seal: Lead Wall down in the Swan.
Army Chick: her name was Ellie. Like Eloise…Eloise Hawking. Thats why she looked familiar to Faraday.
Am I the only one that made the connections?
January 28th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
widmore is in his 20′s (by appearance) in the 1950′s. in 2008 he definitely does not look 80. maybe he is forced in some moment of desperation to turn the donkey wheel and thats how he “lost” the island and why he has such trouble reclaiming it. final non mythology related awesomeness: desmond naming his son charlie. ftw
January 28th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Well it sounds like i was wrong about Ms. Hawking not being Faradays om when Widmore said she was in LA i think that would be a pretty good clue that she is for sure.
I was kinda right about Richard knowing who Locke was because of this time travelling tho. Altho i said Ethan was the one who told him when Locke actually told Richard himself but close enough.
Seeing young Widmore on the island as an Other answered some questions but I am still wondering why he tells Ben it is “his” island last season. Unless he would eventually become the leader before Ben got there.
I also did make the connection between Elle on the island and Daniels rat named Eloise i think that was Daniels mom Ms’ Eloise Faraday Hawking.
The room in the swan is also encased in concrete which Daniel said need to be done so i agree completely that the bomb must have been moved there and maybe it did eventually go off and that was The Incident.
And i thought it was nice that Desmond named his son Charlie that was pretty cool.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
they talked about an incident down in that hatch and how they had to bury up the wall…it doesnt explain why they needed to press the button every 108 mins..unless it was a disarming thing for the bomb and not the magnetic energy…but if the clock was for the bomb it does not explain how the plane crashed…but i dont know anything about magnetic stuff and lead bombs so ill leave this for all the scientists out there
January 28th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
but when the Hatch exploded…wouldnt that make the H-Bomb go off, and like…take the Island with it?
And I agree, it wouldnt explain the plane coming down, but it might have just been what was behind the wall, and having nothing to do with the button.
Maybe Widmore turned the wheel, and cant get back.
Cause he was like 20(ish) on the Island, and like 70ish on land.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
ooooooo great point Brian……i thought she looked familiar to the girl Faraday messed up but her being his mom is a good theory!…..but then how would she have become so smart and…what the producers call “a temporal policeman?” well Im sure they have answers!
January 28th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
@Manny// maybe she gets off, and…goes to school?
I dont know. I think Widmore goes back, and then she’s all “oh my, lets study this! maybe my offspring will do the same!” yeah I dont know, ha.
But I dont think they would have given us Hawking’s name, then have a chick named Eloise on the show.
and her and Widmore look to be around the same age.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
ya elle has to be eloise on the island..if so that means widmore and eloise were both on the island which could explain how widmore knows her when he was talking to desmond…im waiting for abc to post this episode online
January 28th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
OMG! This episode was amazing! Finally, so many answers! Miss Hawking named Eloise! Daniel told Desmond to tell that he knows about Eloise, I am actually wondering if we ever see Daniel calling the mouse Eloise, he could be referring to his mother!!! And the ironic part is that Desmond actually KNEW ABOUT ELOISE…
Loved to see Widmore on the island, and how he didn’t play hardball with Desmond, actually he was afraid of leading Desmond (and Penny) to LA and put them in Ben’s path. The ruthless Widmore was afraid!!!
And Richard being told by Locke to go see him during his own birth. Lots of pieces fitting together. LOVED IT! Can’t wait for next week…
January 28th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
They wont post until tomorrow.
I’m waiting for iTunes to post it, so I can carry it in my pocket
Yeah, that would explain Widmore knowing Eloise’s whereabouts and whatever.
And how would Faraday not recognize his own mom? Especially when her name was ELLIE. I would recognize mine, even if she were way younger.
But he does have memory problems, I guess.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
HOLY GOD! I just thought of something.
WHAT IF:
Charlotte is Faraday’s daughter? When the chick said “aren’t you just the Romeo?” he said something like “you have no idea.”
THATS why he left that one chick bed ridden. I dont think he would unless it was for something important, ya know?
Just a thought
January 28th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
have any of you played the game? you can see the room behind the wall….http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Behind_the_Secret_Swan.jpg
January 28th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Well, I know your name as well as I know that you that don’t ask Penny to marry you. In fact, you break her heart. Well, breaking her heart is, of course, what drives you in a few short years from now to enter that sailing race, to prove her father wrong, which brings you to the island where you spend the next 3 years of your life entering numbers into the computer until you are forced to turn that failsafe key. And if you don’t do those things, Desmond David Hume, every single one of us is dead. So give me that sodding ring!
-This was the convo between hawking and desmond…if it was just a helium bomb in that hatch then it would only concern the island and not the entire world…since she is talking about “us” she could just mean everyone on the island if she was indeed an islander. Also, she could have told Widmore that the only way to save the island was to send his daughters boyfriend which may be why he was forced to not like Desmond and send him to the island. Ive become such a lost nerd after this episode…lol..im thinking too critically
January 28th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
@Jello:
haha, you HAVE to think critically to watch this show. Good job, and a gold star for you
I dont think, really, that the button has something to do w/ the bomb, but the button is for the magnetism. The bomb is just there, to make it not blow up.
and just for the record: it’s a HYDROGEN bomb, not HELIUM
January 28th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
Wow! What an awesome episode! The writers are just giving a taste is what to come!
Is Farday’s “time trail” good or bad.
Who put “jughead” on the island?
My jaw about dropped when Richard said his name! What is Widmores “overall” plan with the island…
Homage to Charlie..awesome!
January 28th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
@Brian: I dont think that could be the case. I personally believe he stated “you have no idea” because he was more so the exact opposite of the romeo. If anything he fled from oxford after the experiment with his ( lets say for arguments sake) ex girlfriend (the bed ridden chick/the one in the picture with him).
Mabey she was in love with faraday to the point she believed in what he could do with elloise & the time traveling conscience and she was his first human subject. Then something went wrong (obviously) and he couldnt bare seeing her in the state she was in. So he left. Never to love again until he met Charlotte.
Being that Widmore was funding his studies he possibly became angry at the situation and confronting Ms. Hawkings about her son’s failed experiment and causing their friendship (hawkings, widmore) to end. Mabey a reason in which she is helping Ben find the island instead of Widmore.
And still, It could all be irrelevant. We’ll see though, wont we. =]
January 29th, 2009 at 12:04 am
@tsollost
oh, we shall see, ha. I don’t know, it was just a thought. Cause they both know they like/love each other (Faraday/Charlotte), so I don’t see why all we’ve seen is a kiss on the cheek, and that was from her, not him. So, I dont know.
And we also saw Miles use his little “ability” again. Just remembered that.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:09 am
woohoo! its online already! i’ll be back to discuss anything else i find interesting.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:18 am
WOW AMAZING REVEALING.
I loved it, and leaned so much. So this is Widmores past? An original other, so it seems the island was his before ben got there (granted if he was born there).
But where are they now? I believe they are in the future, not too far but to a time after charolette died; that’s why she’s all messed up, cause in that time she’s dead.
And what’s this “Others 101″. I know it’s a joke, but for real they all know Latin and everything about the island so obviously there must be some crash course that explains eveything. THAT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!!!!!
Can’t wait for next week!!!
January 29th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Yea i dont think pushing the button had anything to do with the bomb but after reviewing it once demond turned the fail safe key i think if the bomb was there it would have blown up. Unless the lead Danial said to put over the hole in the bomb really worked and it was just inert after 50 years like that.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:30 am
i like ur theory about charlotte and faraday being daughter and father. i think the lost creators are trying to lead us on another love relationship when it will in fact turn out to be something different…like how boone and shannon seemed to be so connected to each other when in fact they were half brother/sister…even though they ended up having sex before they crashed..lol. Also, in Season 4 when Faraday was crying when he heard the news of the plane crash was that his old gf next to him or was it someone else? Cuz if it was his gf.. he was crying cuz he had to leave her behind? It was weird that he left his gf and then just go after charlotte…i def think that dan would not go to the trouble of going to the island just to be romantic with charlotte while doing his “experiments”..there is more to it
January 29th, 2009 at 1:16 am
okay, after watching it a second time i find this bit interesting.
.
Richard knew that he would not recognize Locke after the next flash. (Knowing that with the next flash he would be sent to the past. Possibly knowing exact year). So he gave Locke the compass and said to give it to him. (I was under the impression that Richard would atleast recognize it and know that Locke spoke of the truth).
.
Now in the past, when Locke is speaking with Richard and has given him the compass, Richard does not seem to know why he is receiving it. Locke proceeds to ask what year it is, then gives the date and the place he was being born.
.
Now you all know that Richard is there at Lockes birth as well as a few years later in which Richard places objects on the table and asks John which of those items are already his. I believe the compass was the first item he chose. Its just interesting to see how that played out because the compass was “his” before it was Richards to even present to the child or adult Locke.
January 29th, 2009 at 1:37 am
I’m not sure if the baby being named Charlie is more homage or omen. There are two Charles he could have been named for – Pace and Widmore.
January 29th, 2009 at 1:43 am
Yea but i def dont think it was for Widmore i mean Desmond hates him and it appears Penny doesnt feel too strongly for him either so i think it is an homage to Charlie Pace and what he sacraficed
January 29th, 2009 at 4:49 am
best episode so far
i like young Charles Widmore xD
January 29th, 2009 at 7:40 am
“why don’t you shot him?”
“because he is one of my people”
best line
January 29th, 2009 at 8:34 am
WOW
This episode was really amazing, so many answers and yet more questions. i love that they are giving us answers finally, i must say this is in my top 3 of losts best episodes ever, along with the constant and the final of season 2.
season 5 is looking great and it has maken me so happy as a die hard lost fan, and the best scene from last night was seeing young widmore, i dont think the button has anythink to do with the bomb i think its still on the island some were and will be used in season 6 in some way, OMG desmonds child and called charlie how sweet well done cos its named after charlie pace for sure awwww.
NOW, next weeks episode looks so thrilling i cant control myself, i just wanna state for the record that lost is the best television show ever made by far, nothing is even close to this show and if season 5 doesnt win some big awards ill be shocked,
season 5 rocks and we are gonna get some great answers from the past season, with is really what we all want, i cant wait to see how it plays out.
ALL HAIL LOST. X
January 29th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Please, do not post any info about upcoming episodes. Thanks!
January 29th, 2009 at 9:57 am
love the commentary. few quick things to add:
1) i feel like the bomb either a) was buried under lead and concrete in the swan and they had to push the button every 108 minutes to render the electromagnetic field building around the bomb inert. when dez turned the failsafe, the bomb went off, though somehow it was weakened significantly by either the layers of concrete and lead around it or just became a “dud” over time. thus dez was indeed “saving the world.” or b) the bomb will factor hugely into the overall story arc of the show and it will likely be one of the final conflicts resolved in series finale.
2) dez and penny’s kid = “charlie.” parents quite often name their children after their own parents… so they were able to make penny happy naming the boy after her estranged father, and dez happy by naming the boy after his buddy who died.
3) i think whidmore is torn between his love for penny (keeping her out of harms way) and his desire to find the island. by giving dez Faraday’s Mom’s whereabouts, perhaps he knows that could ultimately lead Dez back to the island and he could find it.. but he also knows that potentially puts penny in great danger (cuz ben wants to kill her).
that was 3 not 2… sorry
January 29th, 2009 at 10:01 am
@ Campetin: thank you, just was about to say that.
@ Callum: me too liked jughead better than the previous two eps.
one of the reasons were the spoilers and that’s why don’t look at any spoilers anymore and THAT is why Campetin is right
Just wondering: what would all the ’50s others’ have seen when the Island flashed again? Would Locke, Sawyer, Juliette, Miles and Charlotte just have vanished? That should be enough to convince R.A. that they actually did come from another time.
January 29th, 2009 at 11:54 am
I’m sure that the bomb will explode, and we’ll see it on season 6. I think that’s why the losties saw the island “disappear” when they were on the helicopter in the finale of eseason 4 (remember that outside the island, the time is different, so they were looking the island in other time-line, because they were out of the “radio” of the magnetic bubble that surrounds the island, as Faraday said). The island didn’t move when Ben turned the donkey wheel. As Daniel said on episode 1, “they” were moving through time, not the island.
Well, at least that’s what i think
January 29th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
ohh sorry my bad campetin
January 29th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
also am not sure how listing the names of upcoming episodes is a spoiler as i recall this site listing the first 6 titles of the first six episodes just a few weeks before the show aired, hmmm ? anyone remember that salvatore ?
no harm done though.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
We don’t consider the episode titles spoilers, but details about what can be seen on the promos, that’s different.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
ohh right i miss understood and of coarse am so sorry.
all good.
January 29th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
DOn’t worry Lost-A-Natic, you can use the Episode 5.04 Promo post to comment it
January 29th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Sweet Thanks, I Love This Site. Ty
January 29th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
OMG great episode! he was like “widmore” and i was all WHOA!!!!
okay, so the writers said theresa wasn’t going to be a main character, and ihave afeeling shes going to be not so important. She could be his assistant who was exposed to simething, or his daughter, sister, anyone.
I’m definitly on the boat with Elle beeing Eloise, but at first i thought she was going to be penny’s mom or something or maybe charlotte’s? remember charlotte saying ‘i was thinking aboutmy mum, and i couldn’t remember her maiden name’? mayber theres a reason?
January 29th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
ohh good point about it being charlottes mam, mixedcolors ? could be
January 29th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
How is that in 1954 Widmore was only about 20? When in 2008, he couldn’t be over 70.
January 29th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
@Keely: What makes you think he couldn’t be over 70?
.
If your basing it solely on his appearance then you must also assume that Richard Alpert couldn’t be over 30sumthing.
.
We all know Richard is “OLD”. So more then possibly there are properties on the island that cause aging to cease all together or slow down to an extent.
.
January 29th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Well yes I mean, he must have had something affect him from the island, as Richard is clearly affected. But he couldn’t be 75, just with his lifestyle and appearance. so the island must have affected his aging also?
January 29th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
i wouldn’t assume that he has something in common with richard regarding the age. i think richard has something more special around him there. also clearly not everyone is staying young, like ben aging from a child to nowadays. i assume that widmore turned the donkey wheel and jumped a few years into the future, remember that he seems very sad about the fact being off the island and tries really hard to find it.
January 29th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
he could just be 16 in the show guys, or like charles whitmores daddy whose name ight have beencharles. doubt that though
January 29th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Teresa falls up the stairs…Teresa falls down the stairs…Teresa falls up the stairs…Teresa falls down the stairs.
January 29th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
@nickpeircem : yeah i was thinking that too, but i don’t think theirs really a connection
January 30th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
yeah the writers like to re use names in the series.. we all know that now. Teresa clearly didnt fall down the stairs.. its something wrong with her mentaly… not physically. i think that dan ran his rat expiriment on her and her mind is just stuck in another time and she cant get back.
January 31st, 2009 at 1:06 am
While at first I thought the “Dan is Charlotte’s dad” idea was brilliant, I just rewatched the episode and Dan says “I’m -in- love” not “I love”. And then later he says he said it ’cause it’s true. You don’t say that to your daughter. (Unless he doesn’t know I guess…)
He’s veerrry protective of Charlotte but I think it’s out of guilt about what happened to Teresa. I don’t think there is a blood relation.
February 1st, 2009 at 12:45 am
Great episode, there’s something I noticed (I don’t know if someone already said ’cause I don’t want to read everything, sorry if someone did) In 5×01, Richard gives to Locke a compass and tells him to give it to him the next time they meet. In 5×03, in 1954, Locke gives back the compass to Richard. Which, 50 years later, gives it to Locke, etc… So he created a paradox. But from where (or when) the compass come from?? (I know it’s not important on the show (well I guess) but this question is so obsessing! lol)
February 1st, 2009 at 2:03 am
Did you hear Ellie say ‘outnumbered?’ to young Widmore, and he told her to ‘shut up Ellie’? I’ll bet they’re both Faraday’s parents, and Penny’s as well!
February 1st, 2009 at 2:08 am
I entertained the idea that Faraday was Widmore’s son… but that’s leaves one big problem. How does a kid born to a Widmore and to a Hawking end up with the last name Faraday?
February 1st, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I have a question– howcome only 815, juliette, charlotee, dan and miles moved, no one else, what about the others?
February 4th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Has anyone figured out yet that Mrs. Hawkings is Daniel Farraday’s mother? And that the “blondie” other’s girl is Daniel Farraday’s mother too?????
I’ll bet on it!
Anyone else comment on this????
